Default A plea for help to the computer wizards of OT

I kinda managed to bust my ancient GPU lately and decided to get a new machine. I've never been good on the hardware side of computers so I could use some help/encouragement.

I'm currently thinking of buying&assembling one from these parts.

    Spoiler

    Anyone have any critique etc?

Also, I may upgrade to a quad, bluray and add another HD4870 later, if I end up buying a HD-TV at some point. Do you guys think that that board can take it or should I invest a bit more in it?

Also², I'll buy more RAM later on if I end up needing it.

Also³, Any additions at this point will be coming from my booze funds. Just so you know..

But with no computer, I would have to go to a bar to drink instead of drinking while playing DFO.

You don't need a computer to play DF, just need to get drunk enough.

    Hadn't thought of that, ty.

That's weird, so if your PS fried you would have to get a new case?

Also I dig your choices on case & PS, cant go wrong with Antec.

Usually you just have to unscrew them. I've never seen one that wasn't removable. That doesn't mean they don't exist I suppose, but I've never seen one.

What is this dual-channel mode that you speak of?

/Agree i was gonna say thats the only thing Id change. You could save a few bucks by going with the 4850...its got the best performance/pricepoint ratio.

EDIT and vista 64 is great!

You guys sure the vista 64 is worth the money?
    I've heard nothing good.

And I guess I could downgrade the 4870 to a 4850 and use the cash to buy vista..

    EDIT:
Anyone know what kinda performance difference there is between the 2 cards?
    10%? 20%?

I'm so sure it is, if you don't like it I will buy you a keg of beer.

People that hate on it are running the 32 bit version on old busted hardware. You will be pleasantly delighted with the 64 bit version taking advantage of all your RAM and never crashing.

I have been running it since October of last year on my rig and couldn't be happier. Rock solid performance, fast as hell, and plays anything I throw at it. Also AOC (if you play it) never has an issue when played under this OS. Nor does Warhammer or anything else.

Trust me, and don't believe the hype. I'm dead serious. You can get the Professional version or whatever they call it for $99 bucks. It's well worth it. I got Ultimate for 173 from newegg and couldn't be more pleased.

Other than that, that's pretty much the exact same as the comp I'm planning to build.

But don't downgrade from a 4870 to a 4850 just to get vista 64. If you're on a budget, the 4870 is more important than the functionality of more than 3.25 GB of RAM (which is the limit for a 32 bit OS). For a gamer anyway.
Thats the reason I was going with 3 gb.
    Upgraded it to 6 now
Also, I think the 650W has enough juice.
And I think I'll stick with the 4870, I think it'll last me longer than the 4850 would.

Also, NapalmEnema I actually probly won't be going with a vista ultimate.
I just checked and they cost 170€ here, so I'd really have to choose between the 4870 and vista.

Though I might try to figure out a way to get it ALOT cheaper..
