Default A plea for help to the computer wizards of OT

I kinda managed to bust my ancient GPU lately and decided to get a new machine. I've never been good on the hardware side of computers so I could use some help/encouragement.

I'm currently thinking of buying&assembling one from these parts.

    Spoiler

    Anyone have any critique etc?

Also, I may upgrade to a quad, bluray and add another HD4870 later, if I end up buying a HD-TV at some point. Do you guys think that that board can take it or should I invest a bit more in it?

Also², I'll buy more RAM later on if I end up needing it.

Also³, Any additions at this point will be coming from my booze funds. Just so you know..

But with no computer, I would have to go to a bar to drink instead of drinking while playing DFO.

Looks good. However, you should get 2x2GB of RAM. 3x1GB is not recommended, you won't be able to run it in dual-channel mode which greatly boosts performance.

You don't need a computer to play DF, just need to get drunk enough.

That's weird, so if your PS fried you would have to get a new case?

My current case has a long history, it wasn't always integrated to the PS...

Thats what my friend kept telling me and since even OT people say so, it must be true.

At first I was gonna go with SilverStone Strider ST50F 500W.

What is this dual-channel mode that you speak of?

I've seen prices that make it possible to crossfire a set of 4850's for around $280.

Thats a bit better performance than just a 4870, for barely any extra price.

Yea, but I intend to buy another 4870 later on if I need it and the prices here in Finland would make the set cost ~80€ more with 4850x2.
And thats money from the booze fund!

Don't get a quad core processor.

Get a 64 bit Vista version to run, either Ultimate or whatever that one below it is. You can get the OEM system builders edition from newegg and save a lot of money on it.

Don't listen to the haters, Vista 64 is a great platform and will take the best advantage of your new rig.

/Agree i was gonna say thats the only thing Id change. You could save a few bucks by going with the 4850...its got the best performance/pricepoint ratio.

EDIT and vista 64 is great!

You guys sure the vista 64 is worth the money?
    I've heard nothing good.

And I guess I could downgrade the 4870 to a 4850 and use the cash to buy vista..

    EDIT:
Anyone know what kinda performance difference there is between the 2 cards?
    10%? 20%?
