Lol at the people who say .22lr isn't dangerous. Neverminding that it's probably killed more people than any other round, please come to my house and volunteer for me to shoot you with one.

You can't go wrong with a good solid .22lr for the first rifle. Inexpensive to shoot, no recoil, and usually pretty accurate. Great to learn on.

Psh, I shoot .22lr a lot. It's a very economical way to practice marksmanship.

God, that would have to be hours of driving to get to a train station that handles people.

Given the type things you mentioned hunting I would choose either a shotgun or a 22LR or 22Mag.

In shotguns I would go with a 12 gauge with adjustable chokes. I am a Winchester fan when it comes to shotguns. This one is nice http://www.winchesterguns.com/prodin...d=083&cat=017C

In a 22LR I would go with something light accurate and durable such as synthetic stock remington.

Get an 18 inch barrel home defense shotgun with wood fruniture that can second as a hunting shotgun. Either a Remington 870 defense model or a Mossberg 500 Defender

Don't listen to these fools, go with something appropriate for hunting.

Unless you want to eat your catch, in which case, use this.
