If you are european, you gonna be praying to mecca long before america goes down.
They dont live free and somehow make millions or some shit. They're like you trying to get by but take on that extra activity in athletics.
By the way, I'm not arguing against you.. I'm just informing you that your statement wasnt fully thought through. They dont have a free ride, like you put it.
If you guys have such a problem with being taxed for merely being alive, why do you seek to spread that misery and make sure everyone else suffers with you?
Why not try and re-design how it all works or something?
The difference imo is that Olympians train for years upon years inorder to represent their country, it's considered an honor. When they win a medal it's not only for their personal satisfaction but their country as well.
I feel that medals should be excluded because of that, additionally few Olympic athletes become "famous" and rich, and those who do get endorsement deals or whatnot are taxed accordingly. I simply don't equate individual prizes ie, lottery, poker, etc. to Olympic Medals.

So they dont sell the medal or actually make money from it? But they must pay money merely for having it in their possession ?
Most of the people in this thread really fail at reading. It was stated earlier in the thread what they are actually taxed on. It isn't the medal itself, it is the earnings they receive from the gov't for winning that medal. A gold gets 25k, they are taxed on it just like everyone else, boo hoo. I served my country in the military; should I have not paid taxes that entire time too? I mean, that one gold medal was like the first two years of my salary in the military.
Taxing it as a one-time prize winning is ludicrous. It's not a matter of if it should be taxed, in absolute, but how they are taxing it that is disgusting.
