Awesome. While the story isn't exactly complicated, there is alot of events only touched upon that can be expanded upon three films. Get to see bigger battles, more info on minor characters and expansion on the big / little stuff.

I don't see it as a cash grab or in a negative light. Can't wait to see these.

I could see two movies, but three is pushing it. We'll see how it goes, Peter Jackson has delivered pretty well in the past.

    LOL Hollywood.

Funny how they almost went from trying to cram a complex story in a clip-lenght film and now go the other way and try to make as many films as possible from a fairly lite book.

Although it reeks of "milking the cow" it is also nice to see that they start to realise that books (especially the more epic ones) don't translate well to a 1u20m film-feature.

I could probably read the book faster than it takes the movies to finish.

If it's going to be 3 movies, the first one's either going to be pretty boring due to lack of fighting or cover a greater portion of the novel. Just the Tom Bombadil crap basically in #1

There is actually loads of material in the Hobbit, so it would in itself feed a trilogy, while the LOTR could easely feed 6-9 films....it really depends on the interest people have in watching it and on the capacity of the director.

Tom Bombadil's part is apparently "odd", in reality it is most likely one of Tolkien's theological "clarifications" (like most of the cosmogonic part of the Silmarillion) where he hints that his "world" is only apparently "manichaeistic" (dualistic), but that good and evil exist and meaningfully fight each other only at a lower level of reality, while on a higher plane all is part of a unique and sacred design...that explains why Tom Bombadil was not affected by the ring...

Just to make sure no other series will ever be able to win as many Oscars as this franchise.
