Anyone else finds it odd that rap or whatever it's called always needs to borrow from other songs and styles to become moderately acceptable?

A testimony to the genre's inferiority.

You mean the same way king crimson borrowed heavily from jazz? One could easily argue that they would not have existed without borrowing heavily from their influences. I love them an own almost all of their records so don't get me wrong, you just aren't going to find music that doesn't borrow from other styles and songs.

For every shitty rap song I can find you an equally shitty rock song. Music is 99% trash, 1% genius, that applies to ALL genres.

There's a strong difference between being influenced by a genre and simply copying lyrics, riffs and melodies from other music. Don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about.

    Copying Jazz/blues riffs- Check
    Copying Jazz Melodies - Check
Copying Jazz beats and fills - Check
Lyrics - Not so much as most great jazz is lyric free anyhow

Just sayin, both like to copy, just in different ways. Painting VS collage.

Now if you want to argue over which genre has more people skilled at playing a traditional instrument then it's pretty obvious. Though as a musician myself, i must say that I am always happy to see more people move away from traditional instruments to explore new ways to create and manipulate sound.

    Interesting, wasn't aware of that.

Did they make agreements with the copyright owners of the original musics in order to use them in their songs, like Kanye West does?

No because you can't copyright a drum beat/fill, riff(as far as I know). Melody I am not too sure about either.

Anyhow, it's all a moot point because most record companies weren't too interested in going after musicians for copyright infringement back in the 60's so there was no need to clear anything. If they were going after people back then you wouldn't hear half of the doowop songs you hear being played on the oldies radio station today.

Your point just further illustrated what I mentioned.

    Kanye/rap = Collage
    King Crimson/rock = Painting

Riffs and music segments are also protected.

But thanks for the clarification, anyway. I just happen to think collages are lame and the recurrent need rap music has to use them says something.

However, there's only so much we can do when arguing over subjective things like musical taste.

Yeah, we will just round around in circles for hours. Not fun.
