    Default Does size really matter?

    Some are just so large...

What do you think, the bigger the better?

Size only matters up to a point, then what matters is how it's used. And yes, that's a direct response to your question and the link.

WoW is a lot smaller than I thought it'd be.

Meh most of the games noted there are crap though.

I find it a bit disturbing that the burnout map, which seems to be a city and some area around it, is larger than most of those other games in size.

Size is important in a free roaming game. Whats more important in a free roaming game is making the areas interesting and not just big and empty.

Which I think Darkfall has done quite well. Even today, after two years of playing, I still find landmark features that I find very unique and cool. Such as a large castle on top of a massive mountain with only a single ladder to get to the top. I dream about placing a shard holder there.

I say size does matter, as long as travel times are kept to a reasonable level, little to no teleportation, and the areas aren't copy+pasted over and over. The only thing I think Darkfall did a somewhat good job at is their map design. Not that it was very complete or lush like I thought it would be, but at least there were different settings, climates, forests, lava, ocean, everything was there and it took a while to get places. It made the continent seem open.

On the other hand they completely failed to institute a dynamic weather system, one that actually effected how the game was played (at least there wasn't one when I tried a couple months ago). But it's a step in the right direction when comparing to other MMOs, whose weather systems are non-existent, and map design is stale and doesn't actually effect gameplay like it does in Darkfall.

I would say it almost doesn't count. If I could go 100 mph in Darkfall, the map would seem pretty small. Travel speed needs to be taken into account because big maps aren't big when you're going fast, similar to how small the Earth seems nowadays when we can fly around it in hours rather than the years it could take just 500 years ago. Those kinds of games where you move fast need to be big, otherwise it doesn't make sense.

You should go tell your doctor, it's a symptom of disease and also a disease in itself.
