Update, September 10th
We bring you this quick update on our activities here at Aventurine:
For the past few weeks we have been mostly dealing with
1. performance issues on the NA servers caused by routing problems between major ISPs and our provider which affected a good number of users who were clients of the specific ISPs. This issue had nothing to do with us and not much to do with our service provider either, however we had to spend a lot of time and resources trying to work-around these issues and to improve user experience wherever possible. We’d like to thank those of you who contributed to clearing up this situation by notifying your ISPs of their performance issues, and helped us with traceroutes to pinpoint the trouble spots.
2. We’ve also been working on the serious performance issues due to hardware failures on the EU server cluster which, at times, made the game unplayable. The faulty hardware has since been replaced, performance has improved, but we’re running a lot of tests and measurements on this currently to make sure that everything is working optimally and that everything possible is being done. We should have an update on this for you next week.
We should let you know that our service provider was recently absorbed by a much larger one and that this transition has not been problem-free for us. For the record, we take performance extremely seriously and our server hardware deployment both in North America and in Europe, are very sophisticated, very large, very expensive state of the art server configurations consisting of 118 quad core IBM Blades, and the appropriate bandwidth, and service agreements. This is why we feel that the issues, especially on the EU server are unacceptable. We can appreciate your frustration, as we’ve been feeling it first-hand ourselves trying to get to the bottom of things we have little control over. On Monday we have representatives and engineers from our service provider visiting us here in Greece at our request to work with us so this kind of thing never happens again. We’re also working on added performance improvements which should be implemented in the upcoming expansion.
Due mostly to the issues mentioned above, the expansion is forced back a short while longer, we hope no longer than a couple of weeks, in order to get the performance right, and everything in the expansion working properly and tested thoroughly so there’s no repeat of the last setback with the terrain feature.
Finally we’d like to thank you again for your continued patience and feedback. This is obviously not the kind of update we like to give the community and we hope to get back to happier topics next week. There's a lot we're working on and a lot we have planned for the game that we will start sharing after we put these outstanding issues to rest.
