The owners of one of the most popular social networking sites, Facebook.com, are being charged with in federal lawsuit by the family of an 11-year-old girl from Angrow, NH. Katie Groom's, 11, was exposed to pornographic material through her Facebook account. Things like this happen all the time online, especially on social networking sites such as Facebook. The problem here, was that the pornographic images were sent directly from Facebook owner Josh Nimitz's own account.
Immediately after the incident, the Groom family contacted Angrow, NH police. From there, the New Hampshire FBI field office was alerted and an immediate investigation begun. Agents were able to determine that Mr. Nimitz was responsible for sending the underage girl the pornographic images. Around 7:40 PST, Oakland, CA police arrived at Mr. Nimitz's house and placed him under arrest. An investigation is currently underway.
The lawsuit's allegations against Nimitz include solicitation of a minor, exposing pornographic material to a minor, and corporate self-incrimination. It asks the court to shutdown Facebook and charge Mr. Nimitz. Facebook has responded by asking a judge to dismiss the lawsuit. A hearing is scheduled for Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Boston.
Katie Groom told investigators that she logged into her Facebook account at around 7:45am PST, before going to school. Upon opening a newly sent message from Mr. Nimitz and viewing the pornographic pictures, she ran out of her room to tell her mother. At that point his mother got scared and said “you’re moving with your auntie and your uncle in Bel-Air.” I whistled for a cab and when it came near the license plate said fresh and had a dice in the mirror. If anything I could say that this cab was rare but I thought, “naw forget it, yo homes to Bel-Air!” I pulled up to a house about seven or eight and yelled to the cabby “yo homes smell you later!” I looked at my kingdom, I was finally there; to sit on my throne as the prince of Bel Air.
Facebook started in 2004, now has 31 million users, compared with about 15,770,000 users for Myspace, based in Greenwich, Conn. Last year, Facebook turned down a $1 billion buyout offer from Yahoo Inc.
