Poor man's guide to Darkfall
I've been playing Darkfall since NA release, and there have been a lot of 'get rich quick' or 'get a viable pvp char quick' type posts lately. Most of them assume you have no job, no family, and get to play Darkfall all day everyday. For me I'd love to be able to plug into Darkfall 24/7, but I can't. This is how I play darkfall, and it's intended for people who aren't too new, who aren't too leet, and want to play Darkfall for fun. I'm going to write mainly about killing mobs, crafting, pvp. Then I'll go over some of my skills, what I wear, and what I kill.
Killing Mobs:
*Bank your gold often, no amount of gold is too small to bank.
*Never linger in a spawn for more then three full resets. After your tenthish mob, you should really consider going to a different spawn, or banking.
*Always run screaming like a little girl when you see a red. You're not here to PvP (we'll get into this later), you're here to bank gold, remember that.
*Keep your bars high, keep them level, and eat gluttonously.
*Get frustrated, and learn from your mistakes.
After missing a mob ten times in a row with arrows take a second, eat some food, hold down the mouse, aim, and fire. If the mob is about to set the ground on fire because of the intensity of the circle they are running in, stop wasting your arrows. You have a few options here, and it's largely dependent on your bars. If you got full health, bust out your melee weapon of choice, step directly in front of the mob and parry. Sometimes this causes them to confusedly and slowly step backwards. Hack on the mobs until you're about 50-75% health, and run away. Take out your staff, cast all the heals you have, eat food, and take pots. At this point you probably have more mana then you do stamina. Depending on how far away the mobs are will help you choose the damage spells you should use. If they are far away, ready your poor-man AE nukes, mainly Needles (1 witchcraft), Rend (1 greater), and Eldritch Sphere (25 lesser). If they are closer use blast (100 lesser) and venom (60 greater). Continue this process, use your bars to your advantage, realistically you should rarely need to rest, and if you do; then it's probably time to mount up and bank.
Crafting:
*It's never a grind if you don't care
*Do something else IRL
*Expect to be ganked
*Make what you need, not what you think you can sell
Every so often there comes a point in my life where I need to clean up the empty beer cans, dirty dishes, and laundry that piles up in my apartment (I'm a single guy, gimme a break). This is when I craft and harvest. If I don't really need any arrows, food, or equipment really, I just mine stone (there is tons of nodes everywhere). I keep all the sulfer/gems (precious precious gems that are shiny and piling in my bank) and donate all the stone to the clan (brownie points!). If I do need arrows then I take my mount to a few spots I found where there are 5-6 ore nodes clustered together, and start-a-whacking. Sometimes I get ganked, sometimes I don't. If I don't have any mounts, I'll go harvest some grass for a bit, and immediately recall or run to a bank when I see one stead grass in my backpack. This is how I got bowery to 75ish (rank 30 bows aren't too terrible). I have more food then I could ever need. Although I'm pretty much always running out of mounts.
Solo PvP:
*Die with honor, gank mercilessly
*Don't talk smack
*Bring less reagents and arrows
*Gear up with high rank low durability equipment
*Be sneaky
*Look for chaos chests, listen for players
*Don't confuse bravery with stupidity
When you're full on arrows, got a few extra mounts, have some spare gold and reagents. When you don't feel like cleaning the beer cans on your desk yet, this is a perfect opportunity to PvP. Darkfall was never intended to be fair. Big fish eat little fish and fill the bellies of bigger fish. I consider my self a small fish which means my only targets are noobs or opportunistic. Mount up, stock up, gear up, queue some loud, hard music, and get started. Your primary objective here should be to find chaos chests, it keeps you constantly aware of your surroundings. The amount of noise a player makes when farming (nodes or mobs) is incredibly loud. Don't waste any of your time at your favorite mob spawn. Go to the ones you know have other players, or hell even head near the starter cities.
Once you hear that mystical sound of mob farming, dismount get a little bit closer, but don't expose yourself. Listen to the magic being used, is it better then yours? What kind of mobs are they fighting, can you easily solo them? If you think this player is significantly better then you then move on. You don't need to fight every player you see, fight the ones you think you can kill, or will at least have a good fight with. Crouch walk as close as you can, and don't let them see you. Now watch as they kill mobs, how much are they paying attention? Does the mob hit them a few times when they are looting/skinning? Do they have full health? At this point if they are low on health, go in for the kill, arrows will probably do the trick. If they have full health try to sneak a few debuff spells onto them before you start attacking them. My favorite debuff is exhaust (10 witchcraft) if you can hit them with this, you'll have a distinct advantage because they will run out of stamina a lot sooner then you will. If you can also hit them with a pestilence (40 witchcraft), that will knock down their health a bit, and your rend/needles will do a little bit more bleeding damage. The important bit here is to use the debuff as your opening attack, don't even try to hit someone with a debuff when they know you're there.
Large scale PvP:
*You're useless when your dead
*Heal, buff, support, keep your mouth shut
*Use your mini-map and map, and stick close to your party
*Don't be a hero
*You're not here to bank loot
During a siege it's not about who can kill the most guys, it's about who can survive the longest. Since you're just a poor boy from a poor family, you're not going to be casting volcano on towers. Your best bet during a siege is to buff and heal. Make sure you're always eating food, and you always have an eye on your party. Zoom all the way in on your mini-map, and zoom close enough on your map so that you are constantly aware of where your party is. Make sure no one in your party is getting low on health, and if they are, immediately go in for support. Attack the player they are attacking, or sacrifice (30 spell chanting) them, when you're back to safety bring up their morale by casting some hyms on them (swiftness: 1sc, might: 25sc, Vigor: 40sc). Never let your health drop below 50%, and make sure you're drinking all that sweet sweet resin for stamina. Keep everyone buffed and healed. Don't state the obvious or useless in voice-chat, keep your mouth shut, and listen to your leaders. When they call for focus fire your best bet is to use needles; every tick helps. If you need help, ask for it; but don't rely on it. You should be mostly self-sufficient, and supportive. Don't worry about killing guys, worry about your guys getting killed. If you find yourself elbow deep in a gravestone, you'll soon find yourself nekkid at your bind stone.
