Darkfall Origins: Archery/Melee 1v1 Tournament (11/07/09)
This tournament idea was initially conceived when I came across the thread "Don't you miss..." (which demonstrated that a good number of people were nostalgic of a more simpler time in DF), as well as being influenced by the recent PVP events being run by players such as Harold Lee (NA-1 Bounty Hunter Event) and Evaner Mordred (EU-1 Duel Tournament). Myself and the Black Shields thought it would be an interesting idea to create a tournament in the vein of old-school PVP, a time period that many look back on as some of the best and most skill-intensive days of Darkfall. Please read on for more information.
DETAILS
Where: Espenhal. Hosted by the Black Shields. The swiss rounds will take place outside across the terrain so that several duels can occur at once, whilst having plenty of space for spectators. The final rounds of the tournament will take place either in the gladiatorial arena within the city or in the open field. Considering everyone will have access to the chaos bank, trading and betting should go very smoothly as well.
When: Saturday, 11/07/09, 5pm EST. Registration begins now up till a half hour before the event takes place. See below for details.
Who: All across Agon are invited to participate!
Entry: 4000g to enter yourself as a combatant. This amount is significant enough to garner a sizable prize, but also reasonable enough so that anyone regardless of their skill or bank may join in!
Format & Prizes: The prize pool will be split 55%/30%/15% among the top 3 competitors. This will be a double-elimination swiss, meaning that you will continue to fight in the tournament every round until you accrue two losses. This will eventually lead to a top 4, with the final rounds taking the format of best of 3. In addition to (and external of) the prize pool, many "
honorable mention" rewards will be handed out to players who did not make the final rounds, but were thought to have fought well nonetheless. (See below on how you can help support this fund)
RULES
- Archery, Melee, LM Conversions and Heals, Mana Missle, and Rend are allowed. LM/GM/Elemental self-buffs are allowed. Anything not listed here is prohibited.
- To elaborate: No additional schools are allowed. No additional nukes, buffs, debuffs, heals are allowed. That means none of the AOES we encounter so often as of late, no Hasten Spells, Witches Brew, Pestilence, Confusion, Wall of Force, etc. This decision was made because we want this tournament to be more on an even keel and reflect the days before everyone utilized every top spell in the game in succession. This also encourages players who haven't macroed heavily (to get 75 WB for example) to participate as well. And considering you do not need several maxed magic schools in order to compete, we hope this will encourage players who perhaps otherwise would have passed, to join us in this event as well. While this format makes use of the more rudimentary skills in Darkfall, we also believe it emphasizes player skill slightly more than character skill.
- Up to R50 equipment is allowed. This means it is your choice to wear up to full Bone for the 0 encumbrance or up to Full Plate for the resistances. Transmutes are allowed, but will be limited to up to Q3. Physical weapons will be up to Spiked/Spider bows, R50 1H/2H weapons, shields, and R80 racial staves (no corpsecalls or cobra staves). Any equipment setup within these bounds is acceptable and
interchangeable. For example, if you wish to wear half Bone and half Scale, or use a Dark Scepter, Black Bolt, R40 Bow, etc, it is permitted - anything is allowed as long as you do not
surpass the gear limitations outlined. All foods and pots are permitted.
- On Enchanting: Up to Q3, single-enchanted weapons only. Transmutes are not being counted as enchants for this purpose. So for example you could have a transmuted + Q3 enchanted weapon and it would count as a single enchant. I have been getting many tells about this matter in the past week, so this was decided on to keep things simple. No enchanted armor/jewelry will be allowed, since this could result in complications if your gear bag is asked to be inspected (too many enchanted items potentially equipped at once). We want this tournament to favor player-skill over external factors like gear, so we hope this simplification should not be a problem for anyone. Any amount of enchanted weapons in your inventory for different combat styles or gear setups is allowed, since the player would be naturally limited by how many they could physically have equipped at once. Please do not abuse this rule and come with enchanted armor/jewelry, or anything above Q3, because you will be disqualified upon detection with no excuses. Random inspections may take place at any time.
- These will be NO LOOT duels. However, if it is agreed upon by both combatants, the winner of the duel may take the loot of his opponent, but only by mutual consent
beforehand about the type of duel it will be. We ask that you please have your gear bagged so it may be easily transferred, or returned to you in the event of a decap.
GAMBLING, MERCHANTS, SOLICITATION
- In keeping with the sandbox spirit of Darkfall, we would like to encourage players to be imaginative in how they participate in this event, combatant or otherwise.
- Players from all over will have the opportunity to stake bets on fights at whatever odds all parties agree to! We believe this will add an even more interesting twist to every round. We are currently utilizing several players to be stationed on the tourney grounds solely for the purpose of taking bets.
- Merchants may come early to the event in order to sell their wares and equipment to players interested in participating as combatants, or just the odd spectator looking to restock for future battles. Some players may even be willing to fight for their gear bag, and as such, may end up needing a replacement!
- Player interaction may occur without any limitation as long as it does not disrupt the event. This means that we ask that NO COMBAT take place during the event, other than the duels themselves. And considering how much bloodshed there will be to go around, that should not be too difficult of a request!
FRAPS
- We are accepting any individuals able to run FRAPS efficiently to act as cameramen for the event. Rules will be set so that you stay out of bounds of the combatants, but close enough so that the action is recorded in an exciting and accurate way. You may also record some of the nuances taking place outside of combat at your own discretion for your personal touch.
- Combatants themselves are of course free to FRAPS their own fights for a more interesting spin.
- After the 1v1 Tournament is concluded, we would love to have some organized GROUP PVP taking place, magic or otherwise, between any and all factions in attendance. These battles will also be recorded and posted in the results thread.
REGISTRATION
Registration is officially open as of this posting. We will be accepting registrations for combatants up until 30 minutes of the beginning of the tournament. In order to register for the event, sign up as a cameraman, or even a potential gambling liaison, or if you merely have any suggestions/queries, please contact any one of us in game or PM us here on the forum:

All entry fees will be collected on the date of the tournament. Donations can be scheduled at any time before the tournie date.
A list of the in-game names of the players registered for the tournament will be updated daily, so all can see their loyal opposition.
HONORABLE MENTION FUND
Donations of any magnitude will have your name acknowledged in this thread for all to see. These can be either sums of gold or items to be handed out through out the event to the players who did not make the final rounds, but impressed the spectators and their opponents regardless! This will also help spread out the rewards, so that just by showing up, fighting honorably, and giving your best, you could potentially be rewarded for these merits alone! Please get in contact with us for more information and ways to donate.
Above all, this is about having a good time on an even playing field, as well as anticipating the upcoming Darkfall Expansion which will make fighting in different styles a more common reality! We hope to see you there whether as gladiator, gambler, merchant, spectator, vagabond, or filmmaker! On behalf of myself and the Black Shields on NA-1, we thank you for your interest in this old-school PVP event, and will see you soon! Please feel free to contact us with any questions!
