AC´s strategy
Theorycrafting (evidence piles up, but I do not want to expose anyone):
Awful Company aka. GoonS got one goal. Win DF like they won EVE. There are no rules. The core of the GoonS dedicate their lives to this.
How do they do this? By outsourcing everyone else.
How do they outsource everyone? By swarming without gear.
How do they swarm? By getting numbers.
How do they get numbers?
1. By having daughter-guilds "terrorize" lesser guilds to get the lesser guilds interested in joining them, believing they will protect and care for them. However, this is just an illusion. What the lesser guilds turn into are mere peons in an advanced game of chess. Everything begins in Nagast.
2. By infiltrating guilds, possibly getting one (or several, be aware that the bank might be emptied more than once) of their agents into a position granting him access to the vault. If they succeed, they leave the guild with a proposition: (1)Join us or (2)Die.
(1) The most desiarble outcome: The guild join their alliance and AC still got their infiltrator ready to empty their vault if their peons decide to call to arms/retaliate.
(2) The least desirable outcome: The guild refuse their offer and get RickRolled by AC and Co.
If the guild is a non-threat and the agent fails to get access to the vault, AC will wait it out in hope of their agent succeeding, and if he doesn´t, and they see the slightest sign of threat, the guild will be swarmed by AC and Co.
3. By spreading propaganda through forumfall.
How can you as a leader prevent this from happening to your guild?
1. Limit access to the clan-vault to real-life friends and/or veteran members. Extreme loyalty combined with likeminded individuals is the key. Absurd amounts of resources might be used to bribe your trustworthy officers.
2. Inform your officers about suspicious links and keep your security up to date.
3. Be paranoid. If you suspect someone for being an agent, misinform and possibly expose them or turn the situation to your favor. Keep your friends close, but keep your enemies even closer.
4. Develop a trustworthy network to share information. Your friends might have noticed behavior you have overlooked.
5. If you feel threathened by AC and Co, do not get intimidated. Seek out powerful guilds with intentions similar to your own. We are many.
How can you prevent AC from gaining dominance?
1. Find likeminded individuals.
2. Go out in small groups, seek them out, gank them and steal their loot, effectivly reversing what is happening. Economy is the key. This is essential in order to succeed.
3.Exchange information about their locations to effectivly wipe them out, but be aware of misinformation and use the information to your advantage. Misinformant might equal enemy.
4. In random encounters, you and your allies target members of AC and their alliance first.
5. Don´t feed them.
Choose who to support, but choose wisely. Some of you might be convinced that this is not about slavery, but about winning and losing, and in one way you are right. However, the bottom line still is: Do you want to win as a slave, or do you want to win as a conqueror?

lol The OP is, of course, right. In any game the win will go to the side with the most skill, luck and focus. Goons bring a focus to the game that most don’t. Their skill is in how to WIN, using all mechanics available. They probably also get lucky, because much luck is simply hard work. Hence they win.
In DF they have a chance for something not available in other games, something that is motivating them. Most neither know or care, because they’re not motivated by the same thing. The “win” is defined by the individual in an MMO, but DF has set up an environment in which that definition is actually much better defined by the game itself. So while most play an MMO to have fun, advance, adventure, etc, world pvp with capturable locations creates something bigger than that.
That is take it all. Conquer the entire game world. This MMO can be won, individual definitions be damned.
Conquering the world doesn’t mean one guild literally has the only members in the game. Just as every city in the Roman Empire wasn’t Roman. It means that they control it all, through direct rule or proxies that must obey.
This isn’t available anywhere else in the MMO world. The closest is Eve, but while theoretically possible it’s not feasible. 30-50k players in game at a time, thousands of defined systems with multiple locations in each, the diversity of the game (banking, exploring, pirating, warring etc), the maturity of many of the players, it’s all too much to win militarily, to contemplate actually taking all of 0.0 space.
But DF isn’t too big to win.
At the highest levels of goons the vision is simple: rule it all. It has to be quick, before the game either fails or grows to the point where it’s not feasible.
Unless another group brings the skill and intensity that the goons bring to the game I give them odds to do it.
