View Full Version : Status Report- July 9

I know that I said “a brief development report” but it has been a while, so it came out a bit longer than expected. There will be more soon-ish.

Darkfall is still in internal beta. Delays and development taking longer than anticipated is the norm in the gaming industry as we all know, even in companies and projects with virtually unlimited resources. In our case the time related problems were tied more with the development of the advanced technology and the tools behind the game and not so much with the game itself. While delays are the norm, we're not at all casual about them. They drive us crazy too, and we're doing everything in our power to minimize them. There actually is a bright side to this: the development process isn't linear, so the extra time helps us make a better game.

Darkfall is a well funded, fully staffed and supported project. Production has been stepped up since the last development report and right now we're going stronger than ever. Any speculation to the contrary is completely false. Not only are we fully committed to producing and supporting Darkfall, but we're fully committed to doing it without cutting any corners.

We understand and we even share the community's impatience to a certain degree. We understand that you want to know specifics about the beta testing and the game launch. All we can say responsibly is that we can see light at the end of the tunnel and we'll let you know as soon as we know for sure. The fact that our planning has been off before makes us more cautious about getting into specifics. The beta forms have been ready for months and our tester evaluation is an ongoing process.

Here are the main areas of concentration in Darkfall development right now:

• We're putting a lot of resources into testing and refining the combat system and the actual PvP gameplay, doing our best to make combat fluid and as much fun as possible without making it too complicated.

• We're revising the conquest system that we weren't very happy with and we've come up with several ways to improve it. We'll leave it open for further adjustment during open beta testing.

• Races: Character models, armors, weapons, architecture are completed.
• Monsters: Completed.
• Worldbuilding: We're still working on the Alfar and Mirdain areas, the Ice and the Jungle continent.
• Dungeons: We're redoing some of them that turned out less than great.
• Skills and spells are about halfway done being implemented.

Addressing a couple of the frequent community complaints:

Lack of feedback on gameplay and game mechanics.

We don't think that giving the community an x-ray of the game and analyzing Darkfall gameplay features while-you-wait is the proper thing to do and we also believe that we've gone way overboard with this in the past. This is one of the reasons we've chosen to give you a preview our game through features like the Travels on Agon, even if this is very time consuming for us. Finally there are a lot of things that we shouldn’t talk about yet.

Not enough updates / need more developer interaction:

Again, time is a problem here. Development is our first priority and time is very-very tight. Timing is also a factor, and the development stage we're at isn't very developer feedback and update friendly. With the previous website we gave you more than 70 updates over the course of a year, over 400 visuals, a bunch of interviews and frequent developer visits into the IRC channel and there were still a lot of requests for more. We're doing the best that we can.

Overall we feel that we've given a lot of feedback, information, and interaction, especially to the people that have been with us for a while. We do hear you though, we do read the boards every day, and we’re trying to improve the frequency and the quality of the feedback and interaction.

We'll try out this (possibly) regular Q&A feature and see how it works out. Brannoc has already set up the infrastructure for it and we're (possibly) looking forward to answering your questions. :)

Thank you for the update. This at least gives us a picture as where the game stands now. The fact that there are still some areas to build, and re-working some items shows that we still have a while to go. I appreciate the candid comments. Thanks again.

Great update, Tasos! It sounds like you guys got a little set back, but it definately looks like you know what you're doing. I can't wait to explore the dungeons! Any other group of developers would have left them as "less than great" because of deadline pressure and instead fixed them in a patch or expansion, if at all.

Wow good update, we now know were the develepment stands. Well if funding backers have enough faith in you and are willing to give you the extra time to make the game right and what you think the pvp community has been looking for than I dont see why anyone else shouldnt have faith. I know a thread awhile back got a bit voiceterous with some strong opinions stated and it seems you do actually read and pay attention to what is going on in your community. You devs are the very very first devs ever in a MMO to actually respond to a concern it seems which for me is one step to the game I have been looking for in a MMO for a very long time ( since early UO really). Next step is the game itself and I am pretty confident in time you will deliver that and you will be forever my MMO godleh hereos :D

Wow, a strickt post coming from Akiel. But i must admit that i found myself nodding alot while reading his post!

I`m really happy today, due to this long awaited update.. I was one of the people starting to lose faith. I really love this game idea. But even though I felt this update to be insuring release and confirming some elements of gameplay - it does not however give much real facts about the current state of the game(crafting, pvp etc)

To be realistic; Some good concept clans are folding already(!) , and I`ve had first hand experience with being in a clan that has been in an extatic state for more than a year that just suddenly dozes off into inactivity because it simply has done all the discussing, planning and preparations it can possibly do with this amount of real game information. I`ve had to defend this game lots of times infront of gaming friends, confronted with them laughing at the old content and lack of updating for months at a time.

Did they really need us? Maybe, at the beginning - now, other things are more important.

It`s not easy being a fan these days, that is true - and though i`m active alot, i really dont feel like i`m contributing either. There is a lot of sence in what Akiel has written, but i still think these forums should be around. The site has not been real interesting to me since they released it.

We were promised a PR guy to be our contact with the team, while they concentrated about their development, to save time and fans - but this has not happened. Shouldn`t a fully staffed and financially secure dev team, with their own site, internal beta and forums with several thousand members be able to develope their game while keeping their fanbase growing ?

We thank you for the information given to us, but .. seriously.

While I'd still like to wrangle a dev chat out of the lot of you at some point, o Darkfall devs, I must say that this post has cheered my weary bones mightily. It's nice to see where you're standing right now. I also understand now why you've been willing to give us screenshots with ToA but precious few hard details. Fair enough.

Do you guys still think you can make Claus' stated 'end of 2004' date, or is it too early in the year to be asking that yet? ;P

If you guys could bundle up a short status report every two weeks with your Travels on Agon, I think that would be muchly good...just a short little overview of what you guys were tackling this week, ect.

Or doth I request too much as a lowly fan! :D

Akiel & Niadr,

I understand some of your frustration, but asking why the boards are here only to point out that they don't fulfill your expectations isn't really a valid critique. Maybe the boards are just here for us to speculate while they work, who knows. If the boards don't server a purpose for you, don't visit them. (And I don't mean that in a snide way).

I, also, am not too familiar with game development and I don't visit these boards every day. I do continue to post, often the same things I've said before, in the hopes that the Devs are reading and taking note even if they don't let us know.

Missed deadlines and unfulfilled promises, while frustrating, are at least a sign, to me, that the devs are unwilling to force unfinished product out the door just to meet said deadlines.

Maybe we're all just guilty of hyping ourselves up too early. Granted they dangled a delicious looking carrot in front of us, but maybe we imagined the stick being a lot shorter. ;)

In any case, I hope to see all of you and your friends here when the game is released. Judge the game when it is out, not by the foreplay.

This is great news! I suspected the delay was due to the server cluster's dynamic loading technology.

This is an extremely important piece of technology to get right for any good PvP game.

Great news all-around. The absolute best thing I heard was "the process isn't linear". Great to hear you guys are taking the "downtime" to finish up and further improve upon those things already accomplished. Other devs might just have put 100% into boxing up the game and simply saying "the hell with resources and quests, we'll chunk them into a post-release expansion pack!'. *COUGH SB COUGH*

Wel done indeed! You guys have my support.

For taking the time to keep us informed. Hopefully everything keeps on track and in future we can expience the game. One thing that i noted in lengthy Shadowbane beta process is a lot of players burnt out on game before release and only lasted 2 or 6 months before becoming bored with game mechanics. This is partly due to number of bugs in system but also because everything had been done time and time again. New content may have helped this process but i beleave main problem with shadowbane is 90% its forcus was on city vs city pvp , all large scale. Nothing was put in place to encorange raiding or smaller scale fights. Which generaly take less numbers and are far quicker to organize.

Thank you much for the update. I think (judgeing by alot of recent threads) that this is exactly what the community needed. It would be great if we could get a status report frequently (once a month or so) so we could better see the progess you guys are making.

At any rate, I am happy to see that you guys are taking the time to refine/redo apects of the game you are not happy with rather than leaving it as is and trying to patch it later.

Thanks again! :)

Allthough we all complain constantly (because we want to get in to the game at last !!!! :) ) ... when you boil it down, this is exactly what we want. Put your time into the game and release it without cutting off the corners.

Good News, thanks.

Didn't help much that the SB community turned every little PK into battle between guilds either though. Not to mention the alliances that they formed.. so if one person TK'd another then that brought in about 8 guilds to start another server war all because of a ninja loot on commander disc or whatever. And heck when things got too peaceful for awhile people started breaking off alliances just to start up battles again. I'd have to say that games mega fall was from the community not the low content. Although some extra content certainly wouldn't of hurt.

There could of been plenty of small battles. But the alliances the community formed prevented that. If only people had realized they were using nukes in that game over the smallest things causing as much harm to themselves it might of lasted longer.

Lack of feedback on gameplay and game mechanics.

Especially lack of feedback on "anti-cheat" mechanics.

Could anyone of the devteam please comment on your aproach to prevent that this game will become a cheatfest (dupes, netcode hacking, Texture exploits etc).

Questions:

- Can you track duped items
- Is there any aproach to secure the netcode
- How you prevent "counter-strike" style cheats like "Wallhacking" / Other Textures Cheats.
- Will you check the integrity of the binaries, libs etc. of the game on the client machine

Thank you,

Dear developer - its ok to be carefull with details, but time could be running out soon. EQ2 are closing in and SB tries to makes it more skill based. Warcraft will certainly be interesting for a lot of players. I know this is a mix of several kinds of MMORPH, but it is not only the possibilities to pvp who could count for many players but also astonishing graphics or fine guild communications or things I cannot see. When I post in your forums its of course because I especially want to support Darfall. I think you have to get the beta out running soon, even if you have to do it in a limited form. This would always be a trial to seen how it behaves in the "real" cyberspace. You could add missing dungeons and special areas when rdy. When we start for real the beta trial was just a trial and we will start all over again.

MWHUAHAHAHAA :D

eq2 is a completely different game.
"SB tries to makes it more skill based" Nope, the only thing they are trying to change atm is to implement a resource system.
And WoW is a nice game but it offers hardly anything new.

Darkfall is trying to be something new, not new as in completely new but mixing certain features that they don't have in any of the old and new big mmorpg's. Put that into a skill based system and you get a very attractive game imo.

Releasing it sooner will only make you LOSE customers since it will be a lot more buggier and will have less content, that will result in pissed of customers. If you wait you have the risk of people buying another game but you won't destroy the future of your game like anarchy on-line did with their release :)

I played from day 1. It was horrible, the bugs and the client crashing all the time. But i loved the game.
(i lost my hard earned yalmahas two times due to bugs)

After a year i took a brake, and when i returned the game was stable. And even though many players were pissed off at the beginning, many decided to return - and with shadowlands introduced - and Alien Invasion soon to come , they have more players on the servers than ever, selling a steady stream of copies of the game.

One thing is having a buggy game from release and not doing enough to fix it.
Another, is to keep at it and make the game stable through patching and dedication to improve the product.

In my eyes Anarchy Online , and Funcom has redeemed themselves.

If DF had a similar launch(god forbid); and I loved the game, I would stick by them as well.

Oo, it's dev-quote time.

[QUOTE=Kjetil]Cheating is as you all know a pretty common problem in online games, and while I wont detail how, I'll mention a few of the ways we are planning on handling this. First of all, cheating will NOT be tolerated. The EULA will clearly state what actions will be taken against detected cheaters, and attempts to cheat will be at the users own risk.

We have designed the server in a way letting us insert cheat detection into every layer of the code, and are very aware of the fact that people will attempt to cheat. The basic idea simply is that the server decides what happens, and if the client and the server disagree, the server always wins. If you hack your client to e.g. move at twice the normal speed, it

How the devs go about game security sounds very reasonable and again highten my hopes for this game.

Its really good to know that we are only a few months off. I have been up keeping with the forums on a daily basis :D I dont really post I just observe which I fear will ruin my chances to get into beta oh well, just figured id post and say its good to know things are being "reworked" that are "broken" most games dont do that sadly :( like sb.... they implemented patch 3.0 on test... so much was broken with that... and still is... its horrible. Anyways keep up the good work a month before this game comes out I will be canceling my SB accnts :D

This is good to hear. I have been patient for beta and I can still wait. I want a game done right not soon. I have not been chatting in the general boards much because I have said all I had to say, so now I will go back to waiting. Thanks for the update!

Thanks for the update. Take all the time you need...I am tired of games that are buggy from the beginning, and the bugs just keep piling up every time new features are added. That said, I can't wait for beta :D.

Im impressed with the confidence and attention on behalf of the developers/company. My experience recently in MMORPG gaming has been a disheartened lack of communication and appreciation for the customers. However it is so refreshing to come here and be continually assured and entertained with progress made.

Thank you for the updates :)

Hey, wow. Thank you for that. By the sound of it you guys are very kind people. That update was PERFECT and I really respect how you do not give a date on beta-testing. Although I would love one to be able to look forward to that date, I totally understand because i have seen NUMEROUS companies either delay the due date OR they just say fuck it we can't piss them off and release it unfinished. I think at the rate and mind set that you guys have this game may turn out to be a very promising one. I will be here to test it when you need me and I really, truly hope that this game turns out to be one of the best for myself, the player, and for you guys, the creators.

I think if the devs are going to say there are things they shouldn't talk about yet they need to at leat qualify that statement.
