View Full Version : Too old or just stupidly boring MMos?

I just installed one of the last mmo out there, yep its a korean mmo, but since its so hyped i said why not giving a try. Its Atlantica between, the neat feature is the turn based combat. The game seam very rich which is i think the reason its so hyped, but for me thats it. Anyway its not about that game i want to talk. But rather the fact every time i try a new MMo, i get bored so quickly, like one to 3 weeks. This one, after the first hour i'm already bored as hell. I'm not a MMo freak that buy an account to every fucking mmo out there, i do take an account if i really feel i'll have a good shot. I do try the free stuff, and sometime a trial, but it rarely last more than that.
Anyway do you think there is like a moment, where there is no use to even try those games, you are just too old and thats it; or do those mmos are just too crappy to bother even looking at them? Until now i just always taught, its like bad movies, maybe a good mmo will be out, you have to watch 100 bad movies for 1 that is ok, but i really begin to be pessimist, maybe i'm just too old, fuck. Even good movies aren't that good anymore.

Ye its the same with single player games, the thing is i try a single player game once every 3 years, since i tried multiplayer game, single player totally lost interest. I just try them by curiosity in fact, to see how they deal with such or such features. For ex i tried Oblivion just to see how the fps combat was made. In fact i don't even understand why they make single player games, its pretty useless imo.

You're kidding right? You don't have to like single player games, that's fine, but you do realize the majority of the games industry money is from single player games, or people that buy multiplayer games and simply don't play online.

atlantica was another let down for me too. Most of the latest mmos were for the most part aswell. there are some decent ones with end game content but they're those korean grind fests which require you're social life and credit card debt.

I think its only because most never tried multiplayer games, or just have the short fps try and didn't realize how dull single player is.

its not that single player games are dull (lets face it, all games lose their appeal at one point), its the fact that people feel disconnected socially when playing them. Basically, people want a game with a chat room attached to it~
I personally find single player games highly appealing and to have much more immersion than most online games. I think that one game that does this very well is Mass effect. I felt like I was a driving force in that game's universe, not just another face in the crowd like in an MMO.
anyone else have some vivid single player experiences?

This.
God I can't stand the cookie cutter grind fests anymore.
Forumfall is better than 100% of all the MMOs out there..
EDIT:
Oh and single player games are fun to play every now and then.
Especially the old ones and games like Dwarf fortress that you can play in the background while you spam on the forums and wait for a bus..
Speaking of which, I got a 200 meter dash to the bus stop to win..

I see people 60 years old or older playing online games so its not age.
If your like me your just sick of the cast and click themepark games. I do play single player action adventure games but get bored with them after I beat them. Even if the fighting is action based the stuff you can do is limited by the roles given to you in game. Also theres no interaction sence its a single player game.
So in short most games are Themepark click and cast games are boring if your lucky you will make friends. Which will allow you to forget the game is boring.
As for most FPS there mostly guns type shoot them up. "or i haven't seen any sword/bow/magic FPS" Where all you get is combat and not much or none in the areas of char customization, crafting and building area.
Single players fun for a quick game but your limited in roles and no one to play with.
Well from what I seen If there are good MMOs games. I haven't found one yet. But then again theres tons of games and searching through and getting good info on combat and features on all of them is a pain.

Wait, you're surprised that a Korean MMOG is utter shit? Way to hang the "I is Nub" sign around your neck.

I agree, single player games are soooooooooooo lame. not to mention you can pirate them easy, so purchasing a single player game is useless
MMO's are quite shitty now a days, but I find moast of them can be fun if you play them with a couple of friends. Basicly I see them as co-op games, even though I'm a lonewolf at heart.
As for other games, theres a few good ones released every now and then.
I just think it's because you already set your mind to hate whatever you decide to give a try.
As for Oblivion, I had fun with it, but then again it was the first game I tried of it's kind, I never got in to morrowind (closed it after 15min or soo). The only thing I didn't like about Oblivion was it's combat, wich was dull and way to easy.

Oh that explains everything, nvm then.

I happen to be enjoying Bioshock, its single player.
The problem is the single player games you have played haven't been done well enough to keep you enthralled.
Its the little details that count that are always left out.
Hacking into a security camera and then hiding while it summons bots to kill a ton of enemies.
Using telekinesis to lift a corpse and then bull rush a minigun turret, with the corpse absorbing most of the bullets.
Lighting an enemy on fire, watching him dive into the nearest pool of water , then shooting him with electricy...or just watch him run around lighting everything else on fire as the model textures slowly char while hes still shooting no less.
Being hit by a giant robot and sent flying into the wall (in fps view) and having the camera twist and turn to make it a bitrealistic.
The list of things I've been impressed with goes on and on, and if it weren't for the attention to detail, it would just be another crappy shooter.
Its on sale for 5 bucks at the steam website until january 2nd, I recommend it.

This. They're all either ultra-tedious "Korean" grindfests,or Western WOW clones with minor alterations.
I must say though that the game Albatross 18 (online golf) may be ultra-kawaii but requires actual skill, unlike most MMORPG's. (not that it's not a grindfest)

I've played at a competitive level, occasionally for money, I can still enjoy a well made single player game. And I'll likely continue to enjoy them in small breaks from DF. Different people enjoy different things, you also have to understand that many people do indeed try MP, but often times they end up against people who play online constantly. I know of quite a few people who stopped playing several games online just because their first online match was against me sadly. One bad experience can really ruin online play.

I think the problem with MMOs is that they didn't develop for a while. Graphics did no question. It needs games like darkfall to mark a new era of MMO games. But it needs to succeed. If the guys with the money realize that freedom in games is a seller, then they will start working on that.
I think there is a business rule or something along: Never change a winning team. Or successful concept for that matter. People just need to grow up and realize how much more is possible in a MMO and raise a demand.

I have generally a very short attention span to stick with 1 game longer than a few days. I've never finished any Single player games. I play some for a while, then get bored and it collects dust for another 10years.
Same for mmo-s. Play it for a while, uninstall, look for something else.

I'll say this is really the issue. The main thing that keeps drawing you back to an MMO is the community. You can last a lot longer in the theme park MMO's if you have a few friends there with you. Maybe a whole extra week with your standard free to play korean game.

I've actually found singleplayer games like Farcry and Farcry 2 pretty funny to play in singleplayer, altough you can play them in multi too.

I agree all modern MMOs on the market have something against them it is a grindfest, it is instanced, it is a carebear game or all of the above. Well there is EvE online, it has the right features to be fun, but the company must of not remembered games should be fun. The only game made this decade that really does what we want (sort of) is Shadowbane. I hope DFO really is what it promises to be.

There's couple reasons why SP/co-op games still flourish:
1. Games that can't be played with many players without ruining the idea: Spore, Fable.
2. In SP games you don't have to compete all the time so if you want to just zone and blow up some baddies in arcade shooters etc. it's possible.
3. Games with immersive storyline, can be played with friends but converting them to MMO format is impossible.
So pretty much every SP game i know(with the exception of some strategy games) could be converted to Co-op but making them competetive MP games would ruin them.

You get bored with an MMO after 3 weeks?
how long does it usually take for another game to get "boring?" i rarely play any game for more than a month... including some of my favorites like fallout 3, resistance 1 and 2, GoW, Fable 1 and 2...
why would an MMO be any different at all? they have to have a constant influx of new content, put limits on how often you can access that content, make it time consuming... otherwise everyone would be done.
people complain that it took 2 weeks to get through burning crusade. no shit, right? it's a game, how long can it last??
what makes the difference is the expectations. it's like watching a movie. if it was hyped, the movie better be fucking awesome. if it's just "good" then you'll go home thinking it was shit. but if you've never heard of it, you'll go home thinking it was good.
same with MMOs. you are demanding something that really not many games provide at all. the fact that WoW has lasted so long just floors me... 4 years on a single game? DAMNNN. that's just crazy.
with shadowbane, counterstrike, UO... i kind of understand it more because there is more "user created content." i don't remember 2 banes in shadowbane that were ever exactly the same, but if I run "molten core" twice, it's just exactly the fucking same thing.
how can it be fun after more than 2-3 weeks?

This.
Some of them have nice looking imagery, and lots of NPC's that send you all over. They pass this off as 'content'. To me it's just busywork. Zones and instances suck. I would gladly take a visual quality hit in exchange for a open world.
In no game since AC have I ever feel affraid or lost. AoC had potential but its a PvP game for Carebears. You lost literally nothing upon death. Also, all these games now are flooded with roots, jnockbacks, and mezzes. Its absolutely retarded. Also then the instant invisible 'stealth'. Whoever thought of this should be flogged. Now, and actual invisibility spell or item...that is a little different but clicking on my "hide" key I disappear? Geezus.
