Also artifacts came out, the new properties on armor/weapons, and more land to spread more people out. That wasn't what killed UO though ... it was UO:R that did the trick IMO.
Fun fact of the night:
Tom Chilton is the lead designer (specifically over game systems, game balance, character classes, combat, items, pvp, auctions, mail system, and world events) for the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) World of Warcraft under the nickname "Kalgan." He also was the Lead Designer for an Add-on for the MMORPG Ultima Online called Age of Shadows under the nickname "Evocare."

But then UO would just be a shitty MMO that quadrobajillions of people play for whatever reason. Yes, it's a number, look it up.

Which must mean it's automatically lies and slander and completely false? ;)
You can read both games' credits if you have doubts.

Yes, because we want the next generation of gamesto spoonfeed its users, clearly, the more people that play it = the better quality it is!

AoS made UO a damn theme-park mmo
Item based
Gear based
Let people have item insurance, killed any reason to have the stealing skill or just looting.
Stat scrolls - fking lame
Back in the old days of UO I would play my 7x PK mage naked.
Making the once non item/gear based game into item/gear based game killed the game for me. I started playing the game at release and quit fast when they made the game into a theme-park pile of poop.
I feel bad for any noob who goes and plays EA Games UO and thinks its great. Brother, you have 0 clue how great classic UO was.

All this. Plus even more land to have the already thin population to get even more spread out.
I do have to point out that the QA team did raise questions on making the game item/gear based. It was ignored.
The only good thing to come out of AOS was customizable housing.

In some ways that was good yes but it also allowed people to create the most ugly structures ever seens. Also added some lag due to loading those custom structures IMO.

You should have added [citation needed] after that paragraph. No one would have noticed it.
(ownage's change is still in history if anyone wants to see it)

UO:R only changed the demographic of the population spread over felucca and trammel.
UO:AOS killed the pvp system.
UO:AOS was far more devastating.

AOS brought UO into the modern genre of MMORPGs by putting in things that were starting to become the norm elsewhere.
Unfortunately, it was the wrong type of game with mostly the wrong type of player base for this venture.
What EA should have done was created a brand new MMORPG from scratch if they wanted to compete in the modern world. Warhammer was several years too late.

Agree
UO:R took UO down from being the best mmo ever (imo that is) but it didnt truly destroy the game. As long as you stuck to fel UO was still a fun game just not as good as it once was.
UO:AoS completely arseraped it and then pissed on the corpse by changing how everything worked fundamentally essentialy making it an EQ clone

They tried and failed. They used money from UO to fund other projects instead of fixing long standing bugs. UO was considered EA's cash cow, and thats from quotes in interviews from EA's high ups.

Partly agree. UO:R was still very fun for me. Factions was still hillarious.AOS was horrible but playable for year or so. By then the artifact race was full speed and ninjas running around and all sorts of other weird crap.
