Well, it runs on every kind of crappy pc there is. That's one of the reasons for it's popularity. It's also very easy to play. Remember, a game don't have to be actually good to be incredibly popular. WoW is the best example for this.

It is a well made game, became massively popular and is more skill reliant then most games. CS and CSS are very good games, always have been. They may be simple but that are fair, balanced and fun.
One of the best FPS ever, especially with shitty games like Halo.
I preferd Unreal/UT and quake 3 back in the days. But when I tryed out the latest unreal it was just obvius I'm not cut out for it anymore, even though I managed semi well, none of the kills was realy justified since I had moast luck with the bio-gauss rifle (the green blob gun).
Last FPS that I spent ALOT of time with was BF2, and the moast recent I play every now and then is TF2.
I think I had the moast fun with BF2 though, especialy since me and 2-3 others usualy went to a gaming café and played it over night togheter, pulling of al kinds of stunts. To bad last time I played everyone and their mother had picked up the sniper, if they didn't drive a tank that is.
The best time was befor they changed soo that you could only join a group after you had spawned, this way we would keep respawning on enemy carriers by switiching out the leader if he died on it to another member of the group.

CS was epic back in 1998 in lan Cafes after school ripping face with the old AWP in CS_Militia and the original Siege.
Up to 2002 i still played occasionally strictly in lan cafes with friends.
I actually bought a copy of HL in like 2006 just for kicks and tried CS online.
My god, the people are just terribad, all they do is trash talk.
Most importantly, easiest fps to get into, modded off the best fps game ever made.
The hit detection seems pretty dodgy especialy with the sniper rifles just shot some standing still twice in the exact same place first shot missed, second was a headshot.

what do u mean by balance? the weapons r all parrelel and everyone starts off almost the same. What i can't stand about css is that there r only pros online when i play, everybody just takes out the AK right away and headshots from any distance, that is just redicules, lamest crap ever. Also being able to shoot through some of the walls and corners is just stupid as well i cant stand css. (unless with friends :D)
Also i still play halo 1 online on my PC i got it for 15 bux a while back, it's alot better than the xbox version since it has flame thrower, rocket warthogs and alot more maps. it's a great game xD

You cant judge css if you haven't scrimmed with an actual team and played competitively. If you haven't then you dont know the actual team work and dedication it takes to win against a good team.

Haven't played Red Orchestra, looks like shit.
Armed Assault is more a strategy game, player skill is really downplayed although present. It's pretty boring to play for anyone but the leaders.
BF2, oh boy that's a good one. Anyone can play BF2 and get some random kills and some random deaths. There's no skill involved.
CS manages to put focus on both skill and tactics which the above fail at.

It feels sharp. Great intensity in the combat, feels believable (not counting all those times people miss 30 bullets at close range because they paniced and tried to spray). And my favourite part:
Easily accessible mind games.
I don't see that in many other shooters, there it's usually just about who's the better shot (or so it seems to newbies) in Counter-strike everyone is playing the guessing game on when to sneak, when to camp, where the opponent is, when to flash etc. Also, dying means you'll have to wait upwards to 2 minutes to play again which makes people fearful of death and near death moments get you good adrenaline especially if making it out alive means you just killed four guys.
Honestly though, I think project reality does it better.

It's another game that you say is stupid when you suck, and the best game ever when you rock.
That and... It seems the most legit for skill proving fps.
Sure you get the random shottyfucker, or p90 spammer. But when it comes down to it, you can tell who's really fucking good, and who is awful.
Some people are just phenomenal at CSS.
And I did do a couple professional matches as a stand in, and it is an entirely different experience from playing public servers.
Some people refuse to "pub," and will only scrim. t's just THAT different.

well, to be honest, i never played the game much, so i don't know all its history, i wasn't there. it was my impression that half-life was the break-away fps, it set the standard since the first doom game came out and CS made online multiplayer easily accessible. someone should correct me if i'm wrong on that.
if you are looking for a good game, don't go for CS, its outdated now, the reason it was so good has come and gone.

I believe that cs:s is the best online fps ever.
maps are intricate, usually balanced, and are small enough and detail filled to make knowing your environment matter.
It's tactical and medium paced (sometimes slow, sometimes very very fast), and requires you to learn the game's mechanics before you are even capable of having an even kd ratio.
Community is a mix of annoying 8 year olds and dickheads and some pretty cool guys. But the modding community is good, and there are some excellent, original, well balanced and designed player-made maps.
Or maybe I'm just biased towards the whole thing. I really like tf:2, and cod4... just not as much as cs:s.
edit: and, unfortunately, I own cs 1.6 but cannot play it. There aren't very many servers for the game running, and none of them are local, so I really can't get a half-decent ping ever. I have played it a few times, and it's just too outdated for me to enjoy. I wish I could, but can't for these reasons.

also, my current pc simply can't run newer source-based games. I think it would ruin the experience if I turned down all of the effects.

Oh. Well think Battlefield, only it's way more intense and it doesn't suck balls.
And you get to place the buildings if you're the commander. And you get to choose the path of your tech tree, which leads to a fuckton of vehicle combinations.

Simple but can be deep, fun, competitive, fun as hell with friends, loads of mods and maps, in other words a lot of customization. I love CS or any other vs FPS games like it because it's so quick to get into. You connect, run around and shoot for a while, then quit without having to think about missing loot or stuff like that.
There's also mods and cool maps and such that adds even more fun play.
Even though FPSsesses should never be played on a console, I'm having a blast with friends on xbox live and COD world at war.

First, where the fuck does it say it's special? It's cool, but special? Fuck no. Don't even make that assumption just to bash it for something your retard friends said.

I HATE the unreal series, no tactical stuff in there at all, all tactics (whatever's left of them in the unreal series) are overshadowed by twitch skill. The game runs SOLEY off of twitch, or atleast that was my impression (you can, walk, jump, or shoot, yay for tactics)

To me, it's a no BS game (When your PCWing or Warring) and you just know what's happening. The interface is low-key and easy to use. Balanced as fuck, there's no "God Mode" gun at all, no levels, no upgrades.
Also, it's easy to mod off. You've got: Zombie-Mod, Warcraft-Mod, Gungame etc. It's just a simple, fun game.

In my opinion nothing is great about the game. It is very overrated, and I don't think its popularity has decreased despite the many many 100000x better first person shooters that have released after CS.
As one gets to know the game, they just stick to it ignoring everything else. This has born the so-very-recognizable counter-community.
