What do they do with the gifts after they hand them over to the state department or w/e, that's my question, it seems like it'd be a real shame just to let all that stuff rot.

Good question, I had to dig a little to find this (http://www.reagan.utexas.edu/archives/reference/gifts.html), and it appears to just go to a museum. While this is for the president and first lady, I am sure it applies to all government officials.
