I'll be building a computer in January (expecting a post-xmas price drop). So far this is what I have with my $1000 max budget.

Any recommended switches or additions? I intend to bring the CPU to ~3.4, RAM to 5-5-5-15, and overclock the video card as well.
I transfering a 74g raptor that has my OS (XP). Would it be worth it to keep that as the boot drive or put the 2 640s in RAID 0 and use those?
Thanks

The 10k rpm raptor would perform better than your 640s. Put soem games on it.

For $1000, if you get only 1 HD, you should be able to afford a GTX 280. Other than that, that looks good.
Do note that installing a new motherboard WILL require the hard drive to be formatted. I would still use the 10k raptor for anything that is at all load intensive (the main thing being the operating system), so yeah I would still keep the raptor as the boot drive, if you have the SATA ports for 3 drives and a RAID controller. Alternatively you could put a load intensive game or two on there, though honestly you won't gain that much performance from including it (which is why I wouldn't bother with the second 640).

Looks pretty good. The only thing I'd change is the CPU...I'd go for a faster Dual Core rather than a Quad, but that's just personal preference.

I would upgrade to the Antec 1200 case. You can usually find them on sale with a PSU included. Gives you a bit more room to layout your rig. As for your CPU I would give some thought to one of the newer quads. 6600s just dont cut it anymore. Stay away from Nvidia cards. None of them are compatable with dx10.1. There are some realy nice chipsets for ATI systems out there that would fit well with a newer quad.

Agreed. Use the other two for music, video, data storage.

Radeon HD4870 > GTX 260 192-core version.
Also, you will be pushing that PSU to its limit wif you pick a GTX 280. It may or may not run.
