View Full Version : New Boards

Tasos
04-29-2004, 12:46 PM
There was a news update (http://www.darkfallonline.com/devspeak/upgrade.html) earlier today explaining what we're doing and why.

The board upgrade is in progress as you can probably tell by the recent downtime and by the temporary board skin.

Check out these boards and if there are any bugs you wish to report, please post them in this thread.

We hope that these activities do not inconvenience you.

Hey Tasos, I just wanted to take my hat off to you guys for not tolerating that EV1-SCO bullshit. To me your decision to change providers is a real showing of integrity. Keep up the good work.

It deleted my loginname Myrd[SUN] (checked my last post and it now says guest under it)
It seems to have affected peoples signatures now showing <span> code.

Dont care too much for the new boards so far..

edit: the mouse-over preview of threads is damn nice, though

Aww, come on, the boards will be much better once they get them skinned and customized properly.

Private messaging and signatures should be enabled by default. I think this is probably what you guys were planning anyway, just can only do things so fast i know.

I must agree with Alistair. Good work, Devs. That kinda thing pisses me off.

I hope these things get skinned soon. >_> We can see our post counts now!

The PM index got messed up so they are all dated 12-31-1969 at 11pm now (i know, it happens). I assume that new PMs are working correctly, but i don't really have any way to test it.

I'm with Alistair on this one. Keeping as far away from anyone supporting SCO is one of the best things they could do to support the Linux community.

Now if they'd only put a linux client for DF...

General board functions seem to be working fine, but I did notice links inside old threads are now broken. Kinda to be expected I guess.

I personally dislike the new boards from the visuals (whole interface, smileys etc.)

But I can understand why you changed and I totally agree with you.
Keep up the good work, no bugs experienced this far...

I'll get used to this board I guess, but I liked the old ones better. Just by using the board will get me more used to it and thus starting to like it =)

Archibald
04-29-2004, 03:12 PM
as I said in the other thread, yea I agree that the style of the boards atm don't quite fit into DF , nothing a skin change couldn't fix :P , but I love the new little things on the board like the buttons and thread preview.. :) smileys do look odd aswell, when I can figure out how to do them,, (hint hint devs add the smileys box again :P )

edit** it doesn't say whos in the thread either now, unless I haven't found that yet either :) , I liked seeing people in the thread

I agree with Alistair and Tristam...having the integrity and guts to change webservers for purchasing the SCO license deserves a standing ovation.

I'm gonna make it my mission to drum up a couple of extra subscribers just for that move.

If SCO can sell Linux licenses then I can to.

Hey! Maybe that's how I'll get rich, I'll license Linux and while I'm at it I'm gonna license OXYGEN to!

Sneaky sneaky, I notice I can no longer see what thread a Developer is currently reading...the link is blank below their name.

I can appreciate why you would block this information, but it was always nice to see what yall were looking at for curiosities sake. ;)

Edit: And i like the new look and design of the forum, but you guys are changing the background colours and stuff right? Still, this will do nicely.

Glad to hear you've abandoning EV1. It's horrible what SCO is trying to do to Linux, and its good to know that you're willingly leaving the first server to go along with SCO.

No, no, no... I've got the license to Oxygen... I'm having trouble getting paid for it. Everyone I take it away from dies before their check clears.

These boards are fine, I'm sure everyone will get used to them and will be eagerly anticipating the skin change!!

New boards, nice. VBulletin Boards are really good, everything will look better once a new skin is put up I'm sure.

Props for standing by your beliefs, and dropping your old provider. A lot of companies wouldn't have done that. :D

Note: The old smilies were much better.

For those of you using signatures we've switched from using html in them to vB code, which is basically what you've all been using in posts for the past couple years. For those of you that aren't seeing signatures, we'll have all user profile options updated soon. ;)

Jangang
04-29-2004, 10:30 PM
Sigs are pretty easy to fix, it seems like the coding is slightly different on the new boards, but its very easy to figure out how to redo what you had on the old boards. Seems like there is a character limit though.

All I can say is, wow. Great job in taking the stance you are. Too many would just ignore it for the easy road of not having to make a change.

Not that you needed to earn any, but you have earned a great deal of respect from me.

Someday, SCO will be gone, thanks for contributing to it. :)

Seems all threads beyond page 313 on the General Discussion boards are locked and dated 1969. The last open thread on that page is http://forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php?t=557 Anything beyond this gets dated 1969.

Does this mean that we can expect a Linux DF client? After all M$ is not so secretly financing SCO's efforts. Building a game that requires purchasing an OS from one of SCO's financial partners doesn't seem very Linux friendly.

And quite frankly I have a hard time believing that the majority of people who are PMing Brannoc are saying "Brannoc, the forum colors suck," rather than "Brannoc, you suck," but that's just me.

Now that the boards are skinned, they look a lot better. But I do have one request... Could you make it so the banner uptop takes you to DarkFall website instead of the main forum page? It was really convenient that way.

Thanks.

We have done a few updates to the boards.

- The new skin is in place, as you probably can see.
- Clicking the Darkfall banner will now take you to the Darkfall homepage.
- We have altered the settings of every user, so that everyone should now have PMs enabled and autosubscribe set to off.
- We have also enabled viewing of signatures, avatars and images for everyone.

Forgive me if I don't bob for beta.

I like Brannoc. I like Linux. I like DF. I don't like you.

Since RW dumped EV1L in support of free software it seemed appropriate to bring up the fact that the game's client is not being written to run on free software. It's also worth mentioning that the game's client doesn't even have to be a native Linux client to run under Linux, it just has to be Wine friendly. If RW wants to go the extra mile then they could work to ensure that the client is Wine friendly. They don't even have to dump M$.

I'll try to suck more ass in my future posts rather than continue with my off color humor so that I don't offend any rabid fanboi. Maybe I'll change my sig so that it contains my system specs and past beta experience so that I can fit in.

I love the new skin. Very user friendly colours :D

Alistair
04-30-2004, 05:26 PM
Lol. Well, i don't have anything against them making a Linux client, except it would make security policing harder when they have to deal with two different platforms. If Linux was any sort of competitor with Windows, that would be one thing, but it's not. Linux is good for power users, especially people running servers, but it is an extremely poor piece of software for consumers.

Anyway, i like the new board skin, at least i like the way it looks, but it's so dark it's a little hard to read. If the text color was true white then i think it would be much easier to read. Maybe i can customize it myself, i dunno i'll play around with it later.

I like the new skin as well. Always liked dark colors.

Of course we all will have to get used to new user interface, but it will happen naturally in a few days.

The only element that may need change is pure-red toolbar color (userCP - FAQ - MembersList... and the same at bottom). The red-leather texture of headers is great, but pure red color of toolbars attracts too much attention and bad for my eyes, even if it is dark-red. Maybe it could be moved slightly towards a grayscale.

After playing around on the boards for a while now, i would just like to reiterate that the text color REALLY needs to be changed to white (instead of grey), at least as an option. Right now it is very hard on my eyes to read the forums, and I'm going to have to stop spending so much time here if it stays this way. Maybe some think that's a good thing, hehe, but i'm sure i'm not the only one affected.

Bleh, these new forums really suck for me. I used to be able to see A LOT more text on the screen in the old forums - now I can only read one post at a time. The colors and added features aren't bad, but god the layout sucks compared to the old forums.
Forum also brakes format in 800x600.

***WHOEVER SAID LINUX WAS A 'horrible piece of software for average consumers'***<<EDIT

Unless you're a complete idiot, Linux(ANY DISTRO) is very simple once set up, and is only hard to set up if you've never messed with your OS before. I've heard of(many) completely computer illiterate people being switched to linux, and not having ANY problems, any of the bigger DEs for Linux are extremely parallel to the standard windows GUI(in fact they normally look much better as far as that goes, as well as working better).

If my 7 year old cousin can hop onto my Gentoo Box and use it with NO problems, without EVER having seen a linux desktop before, then ANYONE can use it, VERY easily.

way to go RW, SCO is losing more and more everyday ;)

You're completely and totally clueless. Linux is already a PROVEN FAILURE as a consumer product, what do you think you are railing against? It's an EMPIRICAL FACT. Even if you aren't insightful enough to understand why it is true, you should be able to recognize the simple REALITY of REAL LIFE. Keep on huffin'.

It appears PMs are limited to 5000 characters. I have not bothered to check the size limit on posts, although I assume it may be the same. Hence, I can no longer PM clan list updates to forum moderators.

I suppose this is simply a blessing in disguise for me. Perhaps I'll just hack and slash through the list, leaving just the clan names linked to their URLs. 'Twill make future updates much easier all around.

I surf the net in 800x600 resolution. Anything smaller and it is hard to read. (Yes, I'm an old fart!)

Darkfall's new forums don't seem to fit in my webpage browser anymore and I have to sroll to the right to see it all. Is there a setting I can change besides my screen resolution?

thanks!

Jangang
05-06-2004, 02:33 AM
I'm not sure if this has been brought up or not yet, but the sigs are limited to 300 characters. On the surface that seems like a reasonable level, however it seems like the code counts towards that limit. By the time all the coding is put in to add an image, and link it to a website your hard pressed to fit two sentances in your sig.

I had to remove my name / title from mine just to fit the two quotes, and even then I couldn't fit all of AshTheUgly's name after the second quote. It would be swell if that limit could be increased a bit, maybe to 500. No worries though.

The skin is cool, but I don't like the boards at all. Completely inferior to the last ones we had.

These boards either store way less past posts and messages, or a crap load of stuff happened to get deleted. I can't even look at all of my previous posts. Only 500 come up (yeah, I'm a pack rat).

The private messages section is all screwed up and there are no dates. And I don't even know who I was recieving or sending messages to when I look at my mail folders.

And where the hell are the [QUOTE], [BOLD], [ITALICS], etc...? I can't find shit when I'm posting.

Jangang
05-12-2004, 12:26 AM
Porthios, I'm sure the issue with your posts, and pm's being messed is a database conversion issue, different software stores the information differently in the database, and converting it doesn't always go perfect. I could be wrong about that, but I bet thats all it is.

To get the quote, bold, italics, and the like you have to change a setting. Click on "User CP" at the top of the page, then click on "Edit Options" located on the pane that will be on the left side of the screen. After that scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen and and find the category "Misc Options", that category has a setting called "Message Editor Interface" the default setting is "Basic", but if you change it to "Standard" or "Enhanced" you will have more tools when posting messages.

Hope that helps. :D
