5.1 sound with vista 64

I've had this rig for almost a year now and after fucking with it for a few days I gave up on trying to fix the sound. I've just been in regular stereo with 1 sub mode, but I have 5.1 speakers, can't get it to work. I saw like a million theories/solutions on tech boards and nothing helped. Is there something incredibly basic/stupid I may be overlooking? Or has a solution come out over the last several months? Anyone?

I had the same problem. It turned out the input I was using on my A/V receiver didn't support 5.1. After I switched inputs, it worked like a charm. It was so simple of a solution, I over looked it a million times. I felt like an idiot afterwards.

Uh, turn on 5.1 sound in the drivers?

Did you plug in the speakers correctly?
