Hello all,
I know there hasn't really been any announcement on gamepad support but I've been fiddling with an xbox controller lately playing a few of my favourite games using xpadder (controller emulation software).
Instead of a desktop PC I've basically got a custom built media centre PC running through a home theatre system. I still play most games with the keyboard and mouse setup but lately I've been fiddling with an xbox 360 controller and fiddling with it on mount and blade.
Needless to say it works quite well and is incredibly relaxing to sit back and play compared to the usual hunched over a keyboard and mouse feeling.
My question to you all is, do you think it will be viable in this game? I understand that a keyboard in mouse is inevitably going to be better for ranged attacks and precision style FPS gameplay but I figured for a melee template and the fact that hitboxes are out that it should work reasonably well. Also considering the fact it looks like this won't be one of those games where you will require 10 different hotbars for all the WoW/AoC style attacks I thought this would make a controller even more viable considering the limited amount of buttons.
I'll probably still have a headset for ventrillo, and the keyboard and mouse nearby for things like looting fallen enemies but has anyone else considered this?
I just completed fallout 3 and have to say I forgot how much I missed the comfiness of the xbox controller.

I'm sorry. I don't see being able to play a MMO with a controller. Just does not seem right.

i've also used a xbox controller in some pc games. i can say it is pretty amazing and also relaxing as you said.
i'm not sure if it can be used with darkfall but if so, you'll need more buttons than a traditional xbox controller. you need to do a lot of micromanagement in MMORPGs and darkfall is meant to be a lot more complex than those MMORPGs.

You will need to use a keyboard im assuming. You will needyour hotkeys.

I know we're speculating but from what we've seen the melee combat system seems to be a swing and block style hack and slash. I've yet to see a great deal of player initiated special attacks. Also keep in mind that the xpadder software is heavily customizable. I've managed to fit at least 12 hotkeys onto the gamepad by using the trigger keys to toggle between them. I think there will be a lot less micro managing compared to other mmos so I don't feel the hotbar issue will be as much of a problem.

You probably can but you will always need the keyboard. If you only use a small numbers of skills I bet you can excel with the controller.

consoler controllers just dont work good enough for mmos, even if it is supported.

try a nostromo n52 instead of a gamepad. joystick for your thumb and multiple programmable keys for your other fingers.
and if you don't like using a mouse, try a trackball. far more accurate then a gamepad and just a 'relaxing' (as you say) as a gamepad.

have any of you people that are actually saying a controller won't work considered how different the interface in this game is compared to the current cookie cutter mmos?

i completely believe that a gamepad will be functional in this game. but if you want decent aiming, mouse/trackball is the only way to go.

Yes, using a controller is a viable method. Practically in any game I've encountered, I was able to use the controller on my lazy days.
In fact, if Darkfall's controls closely resemble any third-person or first-person shooter, then the mapping would be a cinch. Left stick move, right stick camera controls/look controls. Triggers will be block/melee or whatever your preference. Just your generic fps settings on any console shooter.
Now, the real challenge is if you're any decent with the look/aiming. With most games I'm able to get the sensitivity right to suit my needs and function as well as a keyboard/mouse combo. If your proficient enough with the controller I can't see why you won't be able to hold your own with most players. Heck there's still many of us that can frag with the best of them during the Dreamcast/PC Q3A heydays.

Some people are better in fps with a controler, but most are better with a mouse

Just look at the distance you can move a joystick around with your thumb, then look at the distance you can move a mouse around a desk. A mouse lets you move faster and with more precision. Get a good laser mouse and stop playing single-player FPS games with terrible combat AI (fallout 3).

Mount and blade is not an online game. If you play an fps pc game with a gamepad versus keyboards, you will get pwn and i can bet moeny on that.
BTW, in darkfall, we wont have the auto lock like in halo 3. I hope or it would not be fair. So no. Gamepad would be bad to play with.

I can see how a gamepad would be possible in Darkfall. I can also see how anybody with a gamepad would be torn to shreds by the first person they encounter using a mouse.

Bump, I wondered if anyone has tried this yet? Gonna bust out my PS2 controller and give it a go I think.

Has anybody done this? I am VERY interested in this, especially with how we can map keys now. I understand that looting and grabbing stuff out of your back pack or bank would be tough but still am interested. If anybody has this set up message me.

Impossible, no controller can keep up with Darkfall melee combat.

Actually its my second day in game and I am using controller quite well. Check out Switchblade or Pinnacle game profiler. I still dont have buttons placed where the best fit is yet.
The controller works fine and i have all my hotkeys on it.

I'm pretty sure you suck at melee combat with that thing.

To some people a controller is a 3rd arm. If they are able to play at full sensitivity with a controller, something I can't even think of doing, they can most likely beat someone on the best moust and PC system out there.
The first controller I have touched (thats not an NES) I died within the first few seconds while my friend ran circles around me laughing (while talking smack with the virtual keyboard on the PS3). Practice does make perfect.

it is possible to map to a controller not to hard just use a direct input mapping prog for the controller.. i have used a xbox 1 controller and a logitec game pad. works great the major problem with there use is the hotbar is very very diffucult to map effectively for more than 1-4. secondly the use of mouse looting makes it even more of a pain in the ass. other than that works fine. however do to game mechanics anolog sticks are very diffucult to acheive a smooth movement tends to tick back and forth to much just not sensitive enough. so i would have to give a 1v1 to the keyboard and mouse there is just to much for a 15 button controller to do. mechanics of the game are just not designed for it think the sensitivty settings in game for one are just a relic from learning this through testing.

If you really want to use a controller for DFO for w/e reason a decent prog to grab would be joy to key. That should help you out. A few tips, put hotbar scroll to left and right direction pads. Hotbar colum scroll to up and down. For the collum scroll though make sure you have your staff and spells seperate from your melee stuff. If it switches to melee before a spell it switches your weapon to the melee weapon.

Not really hard to map the collums lol. Simply add a hotkey to collum scroll and make sure you keep your staff and spells seperate from your melee weapons and skills. Easiest way I posted above. Bind hotbar next to right arrow key, hotbar previous to left arrow key, collum next down key and collum prev up arrow key. Then simply map those to your D-Pad on your game pad.

No, not really. A gaming mouse can turn 360 degrees in 0.1 seconds, if you put the sensitivity of a controller that high you'll probably have trouble just walking around. I'm not even sure if it's possible to put the sensitivity that high with a controller. I know that, on consoles, if you put the sensitivity on 100% it's still slow as fuck compared to a mouse and less precise too. I don't see how you can keep up with melee circle sprinters if you're using a controller.

If having more space to move your mouse in an FPS game is important to you, then you need to throw that mouse away and buy a good one.
It's about DPI, and the LEAST amount of distance you need to move the mouse.
I use over 2000 dpi in some games and play on a 24" widescreen monitor. I can move the mouse less then a quarter of an inch and the cursor will travel the full distance of my monitor. Throw in accelaration and I need only flick the mouse the slightest bit.
Fallout 3 isn't an FPS game.
You can play it that way, but then you're not really playing it the way you should. It uses an auto target feature that allows you to target exact points on the body. Fallout three also won a ridiculous amount of awards and is considered one of the best games of 2008; something DF will never achieve.
The way todays controllers work it's just as feasible for someone to be equally as good at an FPS with a joystick as someone with a mouse.
It's about preference these days.
As long as I can move the cross hair as quickly with a joystick, and now-a-days it's entirely possible, as I can with the mouse, then I can play just as well with either.
Not many people can actually play FPS games with a mouse using 2000+ DPI. Just because it moves fast, doesn't mean you can control it accurately.
I wish Av would turn on the friggin Joystick support that the game is supposed to have.

I have used xpadder with my logitech Rumblepad 2 with games like AOC, WAR, etc.. I was very excited to try it with Darkfall as I found I was much better in PVP with a controller in the aforementioned games. So I set up xpadder for darkfall and after a few tweaks i got it the best I can get.
Unfortunately it helped in a number of ways and felt great. I could do everything cept chat and AIM GOOD. I tried every sensitivity and could never achieve the GOOD AIM I enjoyed with my mouse. So I have to agree that mouse is better because I was one that really wanted it to work but after testing went back to mouse and keyboard for PVP.
