Some people create a character like themselves, so if you're a male, tall, white, with blue eyes, you play a male, tall, white, with blue eyes. Your character may be a little more muscular, less fat, more handsome, but basically he's a digital representation of you.

Other people role-play. That is, being normal people, they submerge into fantasy and play as a woman, or a psychotic killer, or a brilliant scientist, or an elite military team member, etc. In this case, the character they play is not who they are, but who they choose to be for role-playing purposes.

I've never been one for roleplaying, I just play myself. But I can understand why others may need to switch genders, race, creed, religion, etc., just to see what that feels like.
