Sorry but 'The Pot' is just fucking non sense. To make any sense of that song you have to be stoned out of your fucking mind so you can try to make inferences as to what he "means" because what he's "saying" is retarded.
not to mention their songs are like 20 minutes long, fucking ridiculous. Not to mention the music is just terrible in general.

actually "the Pot" is easy
first, listen to "Judith" by Maynard's other band, a Perfect Circle
then realize that it's talking about his mother, who was a devout evangelical, and was paralyzed and stuck in a chair for about 27 years (10,000 days)...then listen to the Pot (who are you to wave your finger, you must have been out your head --- eye hole deep in muddy waters, she practically raised the dead)...the Pot was a response to folks who thought they could give his mother shit for being devout...
now you must realize that the album 10,000 days is an opera written in response to his mother dying...with Vicarious being a sarcastic overture in the classic, symphonic sense
i could go on and keep explaining one of the best albums to come out in years, and definitely THE best for 07...but it would require you to actually listen...
so try this, one that's all explained for you (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wS7CZIJVxFY)
@ Fro - a lot of stuff, from Miles Davis and Thelonius Monk to Jethro Tull to Black Sabbath to Motorhead/Ramones/Iggy to Rush to Primus to TooL to Apocalyptica and even more
i appreciate some decent complexity and thought, as well as skill with whatever Instruments are used, try the Gourds version of "gin and juice" for pure genius...

That's just way to much back story to make it enjoyable to anyone that doesn't have a deep interest in the band's history. Aenima was alright though, at least I can understand what he's trying to say without having to wiki the band.

Spot on, Tool is a modern day Beethoven, I've thought it for years. Bonus points for mentioning Jethro Tull, they were amazing as well.
Even if you can't understand what story or point the band is trying to get across, Tool's music is excellent.

i understand you don't like stuff if it's too hard....no worries, different people find enjoyment in different things
you can just appreciate it for the Music, lyrics are only one facet
how about the song linked in my sig? nothing too deep there, yet sonically it's still far advanced form most pablum that corrupts and pollutes the airwaves
did you try the Fibonacci in Lateralus link? the song can be enjoyed just on the surface level, but any Musician counting out the time signatures and figuring it out tends to get blown away
no worries, Music is completely subjective for the most part, different folks like different things....but there are some purely Objective standards than can be used for critique...and to disregard those is either ignorance or just being deliberately silly, imo

I'm so glad to see so many TooL fans here.
I assume TooL is big in the states. Here in the UK people seem to only listen to Beatle clones and crappy twinkley music. (EG Oasis and any band with 'The' in the name)
Yep, this is why I never listen to British music. It just sucks nowadays.
I am a pretty damn good drummer and I gave up since I couldn't find a band even remotely close to what I like over here. (No links to anything - If I had a kit and a webcam I'd be uploading daily :()

I don't care much for Maynard's voice and lyrics are a big part of the enjoyment for me. Tool's style just doesn't fit my taste and I don't really understand why they are considered as such a great band, but to each his own I suppose.
And Hush isn't doing anything different for me, sorry.
