Understandable. New in flames is like comparing gold to shit, don't bother.

Meshuggah I like quite a bit, although the only albums I can stomach most of the time are chaosphere and obzen. The one people need to get into the most is Opeth. Most underrated band in existence.

Worthless and absolutely ignorant opinion. Fail.

Don't come up with the arguement (you hate rap) because no, I don't. There are plenty of artists out there that are infinitely better than anything mainstream at this moment.

I know that it's a guitar tab, my point being is that a tab is only a composition and really doesn't give any insight to an artist's skill at playing a musical instrument.

That's almost halfway true, if you play guitar try to play that riff. It's not as easy as it looks, although you are correct. Sheet music is much more accurate.

Yet stating that all metal is cookie monster is ridiculous. Mikael Akerfeldt is the highest range vocalist I've ever came across in a metal type environment, and traditional metal I believe is quite garbage unless it's mainly american thrash (testament, old metallica, sepultura.) a lot of finnish and swedish bands are quite talented, and incredibly complex as far as music goes. Quite a few bands fail in the vocals category, yet if you haven't seen my 1st page on this thread about the bands I mention, then you'll understand what I'm talking about.

Once you get into vocalists that can actually growl (and understand what the words mean, definately possible) the aggression in this type of music becomes unmatched. Dual harmony guitars with thought provoking vocals, it takes time. I will bet you money that you won't go back once you give it a shot, you close minded people.

A Fair Judgement

take it for what you will, but wow. I used to hate growling until I heard quite a few of these bands, can't ever stop listening now. My opinion of course, but after every song (which is completely, and entirely different from them) they top the list for me of greatness. Opeth's singer completely destroys the barrier in what people should think about music like this though. Give this type of music a chance you already-metal fans. It's completely worth it.

If you can't appreciate the skill it takes to play metal and how intricate and detailed it sounds -59 intelligence

If you actually think its just a collection of loud pointless noises, well, as Bruce Dickinson has said, don't listen to it if you don't want to die of a heart attack. I doubt you've heard anything metal sides "Let the bodies hit the floor" or other crappy mainstream songs like that. If you can even call that metal.

Your description doesn't fit any of the most popular metal bands; all having varying vocal pitches and highly skilled instrumentalists.

I like, listen to, and collect:

ALL METAL !!!

Except metalcore, that shit is weak. To a lesser extent I dont listen to strictly Heavy Metal anymore, except the coolest stuff like Manowar and Guns n Roses. About all the glam rock/metal crap in the 80s, I absolutely think sucks. I guess the only glam metal I still slightly like is the band Ratt, they were kinda kewl.

So I love black metal, death metal, medolic metal, power metal, metal with cleaner vocals, metal with girl singers (Nightwish, ect), gothic metal (not goth metal, i mean like Type O Negative and My Dying Bride, they are true gothic metal), doom metal, thrash metal, the awesome stuff like King Diamond / Mercyful Fate, I love any European pagan music (even if its not metal) -- so METAL METAL METAL ... I am a metalhead!

I would say my favorites would be black metal and a wide variety of various bands ranging from cult metal like King Diamond to Morbid Angel and all over the spectrum. I am aware and listen to pretty much every metal band in existence, even the most rare black metal from Europe.

My collection of metal / other music is ABSOLUTELY INSANELY MASSIVE... But I will say no more about that, lol...

And that is my post about metal...

Thats pretty much the truth. I like some of the mainstream but almost all of the rarer bands are far better.

Why is black metal the best: because the deeper underground the metal, the more superior it really is. Listen to the composition-work of Emperor for example.
Why the Hell did you need to drag your girlfriend into a discussion like this? Are you gay?;p

Now, Sabbath obviously kicked off the whole metal genre, which was modernised by Judas Priest, then reinvented into several sub-genres during the 80's by bands like Venom and Slayer. But Pantera singlehandedly kept thrash alive during the 90's, and therefore had a much tougher job than any of them. GO PANTERA.

And almost entirely innaccurate except for the Sabbath bit. Seriously, fucking do some research before claiming you know metal history.

There were many more influential bands than Venom, Slayer, and fucking Pantera. Didnt you even pay attention to the European scene during that time? OMFG youre from Norway?

1990s + black metal 2nd wave in Norway, does that ring a fucking bell?
1990s + Thrash Metal, does that ring a fucking bell with you?
how about... 1990s + Death Metal, WTF does that also ring a bell?
Wut about the fucking Grunge Metal movement in Seattle? thats still metal.

I sing black metal vocals in that way, myself. My voice is multi-faceted, I can sing anything from death metal to black metal. I sound most like Satyr of Satryicon. I can bend my voice into many, many sounds. I have been told by some friends that I have at least 6 different metal singing voices, but even then I can change those voices into even more variations.

And I agree.

Who is best? Any of the singers for Mayhem, by far. Including Dead. Listen to any album by Mayhem and you will find the best of the best of those techniques you speak so fondly of. Take a listen to these, specifically:

Mayhem - 1987 - DEATHCRUSH
Mayhem - 1994 - DE MYSTERIIS DOM SATHANAS
Mayhem - 1997 - WOLFS LAIR ABYSS
Mayhem - 2004 - CHIMERA (Special Edition)
Mayhem - 2007 - ORDO AD CHAO

Some of the singers can vary their own voice so widely that it hardly sounds like the same vocalist. That is why they are best at what they do, by far. And all their vocal variations are FUCKING KILLER. Much like mine, but they do it better.

Mayhem - 1987 - DEATHCRUSH
Mayhem - 1994 - DE MYSTERIIS DOM SATHANAS
Mayhem - 1997 - WOLFS LAIR ABYSS
Mayhem - 2004 - CHIMERA (Special Edition)
Mayhem - 2007 - ORDO AD CHAO

Some of the singers can vary their own voice so widely that it hardly sounds like the same vocalist. That is why they are best at what they do, by far. And all their vocal variations are FUCKING KILLER. Much like mine, but they do it better.

Just a simpel: Can you talk after a concert?/a bit harder to talk?
Just curious :)
Can you Pig Squeals? ^^

btw I heard some of the Mayhem songs from ORDO AD CHAO, sorry but I didn't like it :( guess the Black Metal(Or just Mayhem) is too "messy" for me :/

but I like the interview with them at Wacken xD never seen some saying so much shit in ONE interview xD the leadsinger is funny :lmao: (I know they are drunk :p)

Try listen to Job for a Cowboy. He has a damn nice tecnic(my opinion)
(try watch "Bearing the Serpents lamb"(Death Metal) and "Entombment of the Machine"(Deathcore)) :)

i just can't make out what they're saying. Perhaps it's "Mum, i wet my pants again! i'm gay (that would be Gaahl)!" or something like that. i like punk bands like Sick of it All, and Opeth's alright, i guess. Slayer's got a few cool screams, with Kreator, Exodus, Sepultura/Cavalera Conspiracy and Pantera's vocals being fitting. But once it starts going Hatebreed, i get this image of a little boy that didn't get enough hugs when he was a kid.

Edit: Oh, and Satyricon are alright, but they're on the light side. Emperor are cool though!

Ah, but then we agree! Venom is fun for a bit cheesy metal with Heaven's Burning and all that carry on. Pretentious black metallers are amusing too. No i cant do "pig squeals" like Cradle of Filth, sorry.

And no, I do not use the same vocal cord section as speaking. I never have throat problems. I can sing that way for hours, actually, with no stress at all.

Talking is not affected in any way.

But thats just me...

If i went on concert and sang that way every day for 3 hours, every day, for a long time, like over 2 years, then yes... I would have stress on my vocal cords to a certain extent, but thats nothing that taking the time out and healing doesnt cure.

Its not messy at all, its extremely complex and sophisticated. The notes are precise and its ingenius, too bad I have to explain that shit to you. Mayhem in its current state is the most advanced band in metal, bar none, except for the death metal band Suffocation, nothing comes close to the complexity and genius of Mayhem. Yes that video indeed a joke. But it still possess the good old black metal spirit!

which is rediculus in itself. I mean, black metal is called "black" because its about black magic, which black magic refers to Christian concepts of demons and Satan. All those concepts are, of course, fantasy elements.

So... yeah... its all based on fantasy.

Hence, we have Immortal video.

They have even said from the beginnning that video was pretty much a joke.

Black metal musicians have humor as well. The image on albums and the music are only serious because it would seem "wrong" if it were not that way. I mean, what metal fan would actually buy an album that had Donald Duck concepts and the lyrics were about the Chipmunks.

This stuff is entertainment. Darkfall is serious in its rendition of fantasy themes, is it not? We Darkfall fans would look down on cartoony MMOs -- like World of Warcraft! Does this make us geeky? YESH!

Same thing with black metal, and all metal for that matter. Does that make metalheads geeky? YESH!

I take the actual musical elements seriously. They are an artform and I like to consider art seriously. The singing vocals of black metal, I take more seriously than anyone else, because I do it myself. The only way I am able to do that is to take upon myself, temporarily, the aspects of those concepts that I pull out from my mind. Its an artform, so are the guitar instrumentations, ect... Its all an expression.

Everything else conceptually is pure fantasy and should be regarded as such. The themes of darkness, evil, ect... In most cases that is all bullshit, nobody is really like... except for Mayhem, those guys are actually truelly evil, and really they were the only ones. Burzum was a murderer but he was also a pagan. He was not christian and not associated with christian concepts of evil. But thats another story.

it was certainly not meant as one at its conception! How do you know that? I read a book that says otherwise. Immortal said it themselves. Come on, stop makin up stuff, k. Immortal vocalist says that it wasnt really a serious video. It was self-expression. Like a novel. Like Stephen King, it delt with the macabre and strange, and that is why Immortal and black metal is kewl, imo.

Now the Satyricon video of Mother North, that was a bit more serious, but just a tad more, mainly because it dealt with pride of the Norwegian blood. This is all self-expression, black metal in Norway was a statement, it was a statement that screamed "FUCK ALL OF YOU, WE EMBRACE TEH OLDE WAYZ and/or EVIL WAYZ!"

Nothing more, nothing less.

Ammon777
11-14-2008, 10:01 PM
There was a band called Death, one of the originators of death metal: that guy was fucking famous for being one pleasant-acting guy. Even other death metal musicians, they are just really cool people, for instance Morbid Angel, even if you still believe their luciferic rhetoric, they are law-abiding people, and they are fucking cool as hell. Only Gorgoroth and earlier black metal bands were actually misbehavers. Gorgoroth keeps that spirit alive, in that regard (his sexual orientation makes no difference to me).

That shows that for the most part, the themes do not affect the people. If they manage to do that, it stops being an artform and self-expression, rather it turns into a political statement such as that of the 2nd wave of black metal. That was partly why they were so influential, because they attempted to LIVE the music, as well as perform it. Only Gorgoroth and Mayhem still practice that philosophy, everyone else like Satyricon has sold-out to the mainstream.

Even then, bands like Immortal made crappy videos that expressed that political statement. They burned down churches, in reality. That video though? If anyone takes it seriously then they need to go watch Lord of the Rings movies and start praying nightly to Sauran.

Uhhh I think you are right, because I possess numerous (lol) albums of Eastern European and Russian black metal bands that are not fooling around...

Even then, those Russians still do not possess the original spirit of black metal in Norway. The Norwegian inner circle burned down churches as a self-expression againt the Christianization burnings of pagan shrines. It was revenge. And while it was a political statement against rampant christian culture in Scandinavia, it was at the same time a deeply personal expression on their part.

I know this stuff cuz i read books about it. Based on facts :)

Those Russian church burnings, if they are in fact actual and not rumor, are just a reflection of the Norway burnings. They try to keep the spirit alive. But they fail because the 2nd wave has been over for very long time... In fact there were several church burnings in AMERICA after the years following the Norway ones. They were in the same exact spirit of:

Copy Cat Church Burning Time !!!

i do. But i find running around preaching the old Norse stuff as silly as Wicca. New age bullshit, the lot of it. Odin, Balder, Loke, Tor, Hel, Frøya, Frøy and Heimdall just strike me as outdated. True enough, there's a political party called Vigrid whose top position is "Odin's Chief Prophet" or something equally silly. They apparently think blonde jokes are racist etc. Singing/growling/screaming tales of Valhalla just doesn't amuse me. And where the fuck did that question come from? Although, Death isn't just a teenage, Myspace thing. (At least here in Australia.) We barley even have a metal scene at all. People don't like Death Metal and it's sub genres because for many reasons, but if you can respect it, that's fine.

Metal is born (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtqy4DTHGqg) - 1970, Warpigs by Black Sabbath...still holds up as awesome to this day

Sabbath brought something new in their creation...ionic scales and power chords, this wasn't Zeppelin's sped up blues with distortion pedals, this was Metal in it's primal incarnation

Complexity is added (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrO1Tu4ehvM) - i bought my first bass after seeing these guys in 76 at the Felt Forum, nothing at the time even came close to the sheer virtuosity on their Instruments coupled with pure sonic power...

again, originality in composition, Rush lived in 7 count times...their timing in full stops and intricacy paved the Way for a lot of Metal that was to come...as Musicians they are still a gold standard few come close to

Speed shreds into the mix (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BstyQX-kQQ) - Lemmy and crew kick it to 11, chainsaw thunder crashes down upon all, with a true Punk sensibility...all the fancy stripped down to a bloody minded assault...more originality...nobody could sound like Motorhead

adding it all up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUOpUqni0_g) and tossing in the dual guitar harmonies explored by Thin Lizzy as well as an operatic singer and over the top lyrics, Iron Maiden brought the Melody

after this, all the sub-genres really bloomed into their own things, and pure Metal became all kinds of hyphenated offspring , including the "hair" metal that destroyed the innate Integrity of what Metal really is....driving all the other subcategories underground with their big contracts and hair...some decent Musicians, but the puke they spewed didn't just suck, it dragged it's braces wearing teeth while chewing bubble gum trying to be Van Halen and marketed like Zeppelin.....until....

the Thunder awoke with a black tooth grin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUvH9ddfzrI) - once again the purity of Metal had a home, some might think it thrash or whatever category...but no, this was real Metal once again...if you don't own Pantera's "Vulgar Display of Power" , your collection is woefully incomplete

after them, comes all the rest...once again split into the many sub-genres with a lot of great Players and good stuff out there...but at least this time around...there's no "hair"

I'd say Amon Amarth is way heavier than anything there. The music there was definitely stuff you could drink and dance too. Instruments that were present included: the Accordion, Hurdy Gurdy, Bag Pipes, Violin, Recorder, Lute, et cetera. Both of bands below were there.

Death metal (like most genres) is filled with shitty throw-away bands. Dethklok probably isn't better than any of them. The vocals are enough of a reason to not bother listening to this shit, but when you factor in that most of the songs are filler (90+%) with lame drumming, why not just listen to something else? Thunderhorse, I'll admit, was a decent song. Hatredcopter wasn't bad either. But besides that, all you have are a bunch of half-assed riffs thrown together to make generic melodeath songs.

Hell, I don't even know if I'd call this melodeath. It sounds like power metal most of the time.

Top 7

2. Motorhead

4. Black Sabbath
5. Testament (their new album kicks balz)
6. Pantera

any melodic speed metal (Shitsody and Nightshit) (Rhapsody and Nightwish)

So you are saying you're a man who dislikes metal?

What...?

Either you're a complete idiot because that is in no way what I said, or you are trying a second attempt at trolling after your first trolled attempt failed... Yet using the exact same bait...

I like metal. It's useful in the production of all sorts of things, from cars to airplanes to dinnerware to computers. Oh wait... you meant the musical genre. It's shit. Not all of it, but almost all of it.
