Update Feb 27

[Tasos]

In the last Darkfall status update (http://forums.darkfallonline.com/index.php?showtopic=7354) we talked about an important February 3rd milestone. We had to go into overtime on this, but the important thing to report here is that we have finally nailed it and that we're back on track. This effort is part of the reason that we haven't had a recent status update. We'll resume our commitment to posting regular Darkfall status updates after the new website launches sometime within the next two weeks.

We need you to update your Darkfall community message board account to reflect an active and monitored email account - if you have to. We need this information for the playtesting selection and notification process. We won't use your email address for anything else.

This is how you can check your email address and change it if you need to:
1. Log in to the boards
2. Go to My Controls (http://forums.darkfallonline.com/index.php?act=UserCP&CODE=00) and check which email address your account is using. If you need to update the address, proceed to step 3
3. On the left sidebar under Options choose Change Email Address (http://forums.darkfallonline.com/index.php?act=UserCP&CODE=08) and follow the instructions.

As far as I'm aware any email will work, however I wouldn't recommend ones like Yahoo, Rocketmail, Hotmail, etc as their spam filters can filter things out and not tell you about it, which could lead to you not getting your information. ;)

Actually 1 million posts will show to some extent how useful of a beta test you are since it shows already how much time you are willing to put towards the game, and in beta testing, the more time you spend, the more errors you will uncover.

The problem arises for me in that I already spend about 40 hours per week playing Shadowbane, and don't spend much time trolling forums. However, given an alternative open PvP game, you can be assured that I shall switch from SB to the new offering, Darkfall, rather quickly. :P

I think games normally pick people based on amount of posts because they want people who are going to be vocal about different things and know how to convey thier opinions to the public.

I realize its a bad way to go about things because some good beta testers might get excluded, but trust me in all the games that I have alpha and beta tested you want vocal people...a lot more gets accomplished that just people who read all the posts but dont post thier own opinions.

I really hope activity isn't what's used to determine whether someone gets into beta. Obviously the dev's arent stupid enough to think that just because you post the same amazingly insignificant post, over and over... you're somehow more qualified.

Some people have been around forever, and were at one point very active. However, there's only so much you can discuss before you get some real meat... only so many "what ifs".

Several of us (if not several hundred?) have been here for... a long long time. We even used to post once or twice a week. However, with the increase in board users and the signal to noise ratio only getting worse. Many of us have decided to simply lurk.

Number of posts means nothing, except for maybe you were bored at work. Especially when the majority of "high posters" are generally flamers and trolls, trying to spin up some controversy with one or two line insult replies.

Bottom line, I'm glad they've decided to take this route. However I would hope that beyond those few with the merit and dedication (Such as the former Airius Droc... ) who ran fansites and generally participated very heavily... everyone else is given the same opportunity.

I'd rather not get in on dumb luck, than get in because I had, at one point... a lot of active topics.

It doesn't matter, and I'm sure the dev's are bright enough to leave idiots out, and smash the ones that happen to sneak through the filter... at least in early beta.

I see it as at least a disrespect to a mmog community to not register on the forums, even if you don't plan on posting. Ya there is just do a search for that user and quickly browse a few of their posts. If you browese 30 and they are all spamthen its like the other 1000 might be spam. The thing is the Devs do read these boards...they know who is posting good information and who isnt. If you look at the forums and see who is starting good threads, who is contributing and actually trying to add ideas to the forums you can easily pick out who will make it into beta quicker than others.

The devs cant read minds and say well "so and so" has been on the boards for 8 months and reads everyday, but "this guy" has been on the boards for three weeks and already has given me four really good ideas and helped determine how to use stats effectively in this situation. I gaurentee they will take the second guy over the first. Its called contribution, not dedication.

What the hell are you guys talking about? The Dev says to make sure your email is current, and you all take it and run with it. There will be SIGN UPs. You will get your chance just like everyone else to prove how leet of a beta tester you are despite the fact that you don't post.

The Devs will also take other things into account such as how you've contributed to the community (how they will judge this, we don't know). There is nothing wrong with this. If you just showed up 2 weeks ago why should you get beta over someone like Gowel that's been here for 15 years? The Devs have their professional testers so they can afford to let some crappy, yet dedicated "testers" into the game.

I hope that everyone that whines about post count automatically gets a big fat No Beta sign pasted on their forehead.

You are right, this isn't open beta and we can't be sure that they are looking for many testers at this stage. They told us to update so that we maybe could be ready for a notice later on. It could be months off at this point. Let's be happy still, because we are getting a new site with new info!!

Just because we cant see the post count doesnt mean that the people who run the boards cant...they monitor who is active and who is not. I gaurentee that someone who lurks the boards for 2 years and doesnt post once wouldnt get in as fast as someone who posts 500 times and actually participates...why? because they can monitor your ideas and views, as well as ability to communicate clearly, they cant monitor how fast you can read and talk to yourself.

Of course you have to be able to do other things than just participate on boards...for instance knowing how to program can greatly increase your chances in, knowing lots of background about DF greating increases your chances, setting up your own fansite also increases your chances, talking with devs on a regular basis (AIM, phone, email, etc.) REALLY increases your chances...why? because they know you are helping the cause, you arent some bistandard who just WANTS beta, you actually want to make the game better.

How do I know this stuff, because I do these sorts of things for games...and well it normally lets me in at the alpha stages, and even if im late to game i normally get beta 0 or 1. Participation is key, trust me I know from experience.

the people you see day in and day out hanging out and talking are the true community pre-release, in my opinion anyways. Sure real life sucks , believe me I know that, but activity is activity :).

Actually, anyone can see the number of post made by anyone. Just click on their name. How else would i know you made 11 posts? And 10 in one day. And joined the forums on the 28th of Feb.

Heya.....I have to be honest....but none of the other MMORPG's have really grabbed my attention....I have alwyas gone back to (sigh) AC. I have never Beta tested...but I know a lot of things I do not like about the other games...that seem to repeat themselves in other games....especially in the PvP area. I just hope I get a chance to test...as I have high expectaions of this game........

hmm i can't seem to find it now but i could have sworn their whole reason for including the previously much talked about link to the beta application on the site was so that they didn't have to redesign the website to mark the start of the application acceptance phase.

could have sworn it was a bullet point in the FAQ under Testing for sure a few months ago, and i thought i saw it sooner before.

its really nothing, but just thought i'd point out the little bit of 1984-style manipulation of why certian things were not availible even tho theres a link.

Well since Claus said the website was FINISHED like a month ago, and i'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt for now, then something dramatic must have changed in the game or the beta plans requiring some significant part of the website to be redone. Either the devs aren't doing work, or they are very very very bad at setting deadlines :). I am thinking its the latter, but come on people, more realistic deadlines please ! You get the entire communities hope up and then not deliver on time, which is bad. Pretty soon, they might just tire of crap like that. If you anticipate its going to take two weeks, be safe and say a month and a half, and then deliver early.


People will be like "WTF OMG DEVS SO l33t, THEY SO FAST!!!". And in the (very likely) case of a delay, you will have your backs covered, and our hopes wont be crushed.
