I haven't played (American) football in the SEC...

... but I did in high school, and I have played fairly serious club rugby (league and union, regular and sevens).

In my personal experience, rugby is much rougher. Yes, you can hit safely at higher velocities playing football - because you're wearing space-age armor and a helmet, for god's sake. Trying to lay a football-style tackle in rugby will break bones - your bones for sure, and maybe the other guy's too. Effective tackling is harder in rugby, because you don't have an initial big hit to counter forward motion - you have to counteract kinetic energy with sustained muscle effort, instead of using your own KE against the other guy's. That's why football prizes size, other things being equal, while rugby emphasizes pound-for-pound strength.

Football also doesn't result in the minor physical insults like cauliflower ear and friction rashes that are common in rugby, because you're so much better protected from constant contact.

American football also has this thing called a whistle that, when you hear it, says you can stop playing for awhile and wander around. Rugby (like soccer) requires a hell of a lot better cardio conditioning than football.

Absolutely not. It was definitely the first time I've ever seen something like it, and I'd imagine that he'll be suspended. My guess is that the ref has been hit in the head one too many times over the years and something just triggered an instinct from when he used to play...

I'll admit rugby takes a hearty soul to play it and perhaps a measure of insanity and psychopathy as well.

Still there are no huge guys on a rugby or soccer field that can do the damage an average NFL player can produce.

The reason the NFL players wear the 'plastic protection' is because these guys are paid a lot of money to be as physically healthy as possible throughout the season. Team owners invest millions into training these guys to produce wins every game day. It's a big multi-billion dollarbusiness, something rugby isn't.

Rugby looks like it could produce career ending injuries at any given moment, while not pussy that certainly is crazy. Any grown man who plays a game that rough without some sort of protection is just asking to get fucked up.

I really don't concern myself with rugby. It's virtually unknown here in the states. They did have a rugby league here where I live.

The owner of a bar that I used to tend was an amateur rugby player. His team would come there periodically during the week.

These guys were all about broken noses, missing teeth and something always in a sling or a cast. Most of the injured couldn't draw unemployment or worker's comp because the injuries were 'non-work related'.
