View Full Version : Do you believe in destiny?
had this talk with a couple of people i know... I personally do not believe that i have some pre-determined meaning in life. I think whatever i do changes the way my life is going to turn out.

I've always leaned moar toward free-will theology.

Determinism.
Unless we get into quantum mechanics, then we have to deal with the whole "everything is happening all at the same time in the same place." issue.

Yes.
Dammit I meant to say no, but God made me say it.

Ill be honest, i don't know a damn thing about quantum mechanics... and i won't ask you to explain to me..because it would probably take a year.

Destiny maybe, however on a larger scale, rather then being destined to : Eat a sandwhich, mow my lawn, do good in the world etc-)
more like Destined to be cool, destined to be a failure, or destined to die young.
But really i dont think there is a pre-defined variable which contains the key to our destiny, rather then, our actions define it.

"Anyone who claims to understand quantum mechanics, doesn't really understand quantum mechanics."
I forget who said it, but it still holds true. The entire field is absolutely insane, and anyways it involves concepts the human brain isn't really designed to cope with.

So if you believe in fate, why the fuck even bother doing shit? Oh wait, even trying to answer that would be pointless because you would be refering to MAKING DESCISIONS (omg) anyway.

if your actions define it is it still destiny?

I believe a person can live and die in a home they chose never to go out of.
There are paths and directions, where you will come across things, a road with a fork in it, you will have to take a direction, a road that comes to a bridge will have to be crossed, a road with two travelers walking in opposite directions will meet at some point.
Destiny, no, just a linear game.

Libertarian free will is ridiculous, nature vs nurture shape us, if we're not destined for a particular address we are for a neighborhood. Read Einstein's writings on the subject and you'll see how ludicrous libertarian free will is.

Sure, why not.
Your destiny is what will make you happy in life. Like if I write one more line of code, I am likely to shoot somebody, so I dont think it was my destiny to be a code monkey.

No, everything is just a result of people making choices all over the world, all the time

There is no destiny, only chain reactions based upon the choices we make in life, pretty simple really.
Destiny is basicly a pre-determined course of someones life, and if you believe that it's a little thing i call Religion.

fatalism fails
My destiny for tomorrow will be, eating, crapping and forumfalling. Not necessarily in that order.
I believe that the idea of searching for an answer on whether or not there is destiny is absurd. We won't ever know, and it doesn't really matter.

fatalism fails
Of course it does, but I don't think you understand the concept.
Determinists generally agree that human actions affect the future, although that future is predetermined. Their view does not accentuate a "submission" to fate, whereas fatalists stress an acceptance of all events as inevitable. In other words, determinists believe the future is fixed because of action and causality, whereas fatalists and many predestinarians think the future is ineluctable despite causality.
While technically fatalism is false, though much closer to reality than libertarian free will, the one thing any philosophical scholar worth a debate will point is that the illusion of anywhere near comlete choice, is just that an illusion, though most will never be wired strong enough to accept it.

I believe that people all have a pre-determined amount of talents, which are equal among individuals (but the individuals may or may not be able to access their talents). I do not, however, believe in destiny per se.

On the contrary, I do, but it can still be applied whether you believe our desires are freely chosen or not.

Does it matter? What happens happens, whether it's predestined or your own stupid choice. The world could do without these sorts of pseudo-philosophical questions, thanks.
