Seeing how the ones in the general discussion doesn't get the point, I decided to post it here.

We've been discussing how long distance communication is possible in Darkfall. And how voice communication could work.

This is not about implementing a voice com in the game, but discussing how Vent or some other voice com works ingame, how we could explain it from an RP perspective.

I'm aware that many don't give a s*** about how it works, only that it does. And I believe that having voice communication is vital to this game.

We've had various suggestions to explanations on this subject.

Enchanted rings. enchanted rings to serve as a king of mobile phone between people. Flawed, as everything should be lootable.

Messenger birds. Having birds deliver the messages. Flawed, as birds take time to reach their target, and doesn't match the voicecom.

Signal horns, arrows or flares. Flawed, as they have limited range, and should be viewable/hearable by anyone near

Soul linking. Link thru bindstones. This is my theory, which I find pretty decent, so here's the deal.

It's something that works subconsciencly, meaning you can't just pick it up and call/intercept calls wherever you like. You can't bar it from working either, since it's not a magical thing. It is not restricted by the surrounding environment.

Our bodies and souls are already connected to bindstones, which we can't influence, other then determine what bindstone we want to go to upon death. We can't prevent it from working, due to game mechanics, so even the most powerful mage would be unable to mess with the thing. (Except maybe the ones that created them in the first place)

The idea is that you link up to a bindstone, and gets in touch with a known, willing person. Someone you know of, since you can't send tells to someone you don't know the name of, nor can you send tells to someone who's ignoring you. If you don't know a person, or he's blocking you, you will not be able to get in touch with said person. Explains the ignore effect as well, which could be hard with the other suggestions.

You're bound to a bindstone, and the bindstones are all connected, since you have to erase the old copy at a bindstone when you put up a new one elsewhere. Otherwise you'd end up with copies everywhere, if they weren't connected to tell each other that a new binding has been made. Following this, communicating thru different bindstones is also possible.

To put it into an example.

Alex is bound to bindstone 1, and wants to get in touch with Peter, who's bound to bindstone 2. While Alex conscionsly wants to delilver a message, his subconscience or instincts makes the actual dial up.
The tell is recieved at bindstone 1, and then sent off to bindstone 2, as Peter isn't connected at bindstone 1. Bindstone 2 delivers the message to Peter.

If Peter has Alex on ignore however, the tell reaches Peter, and is denied, thus sending it back to Alex with a note saying he's being ignored.

This way we use the power already established by the bindstones, and add a further function to it. And as the link between a person and a bindstone, it cannot be severed, not even by death, which normal telepathy could.

Discuss. Any suggestions, corrections or other stuff is most welcome.
