Am thinking that factions should be able to choose for themselves who they are at war with or at peace with.. thus bringing more politics to the game. It would add more freedom to the game imho.. thoughts?:ohno:

What do you mean by factions? Do you mean clans? Or races as a whole? And they already, from my knowledge, have that...you can "declare war", and attack any other clan even against your own race.

And how exactly do you chose your allies for your whole faction?

this game is more focused on its players and clans than racial cities.

pretty bare bones idea, needs a lot of flesh.

I'm assuming you have some sort of system to implement this notion of races choosing their own enemy/ally races and that this system is balanced and relatively exploit proof but that is more than meeting you half way.

I'm going to go even further and suggest some substance to your idea:
- the system is a representative democracy as opposed to a true democracy.

- the land is divided into many 'electoral districts' or 'constituencies' or 'ridings' (depending on where you live in RL) (most likely following natural boundarys (rivers, forests, etc). The 'residents' of these 'electoral districts vote for a 'representative'
- the represenative with the most votes is the 'voice' of the region, and is allowed a 'seat' in the 'hall of representatives'
- important decisions regarding racial enemies/allies are voted on by all elected members of the 'hall of representatives'

i could go on, but mirroring modern representative democracies in every way is the general idea.

Or, every x time period (say, 1 month) the game sends out an auto-poll to every player, who has x days to vote on his races racial enemies and allies... that would work too...but that would remove a lot of the 'political' element that you're trying to implement. Also pop ups are ghey

Either systems are the following:

Realistic? yes.
Fluff? yes, at this point.
Pretty much a big fuck you to painstakingly detailed lore? most certainly, although a realistic one.

Drebk's idea WOULD be realistic if people of the dark and feudal ages could be that civilized and organized. >_>

DF is sandbox.
the political system is as in-depth and complicated as the player base wants it to be.
Both proposed systems are capable of being implemented without needing special in-game mechanics. SCS would ensure each account only gets one vote per server.

I doubt such a system would ever be implemented... but it is not unrealistic.

Also... democracy has been around since the year 508 BC.
So it was around during the dark and feudal ages.
the dark and feudal ages were characterized by being quite organized.
-- "civilized" is more of a value judgment, so i'd also argue that those times were quite civilized, but like i said, that is very subjective.

Remember this. Agon is a pre existing place. It is populated with people who already have a long history of war, conquest, a rise to power and a fall into disgrace. When you enter Agon you enter something already gong on. Only YOUR journey begins with character creation. Think Bigger you guys.

it wouldnt add freedom, cos you can choose who you are at war with. but with your idea, if someone decalred war on you, you could say no? lol wouldnt work

Its not that simple if you start killing your own race when you first login you will have ahrd time guards will kill you on sight.

There are many saveguards and controlled gamemaganics build into darkfall it will limited your freedom.

Only if you deside with a group to go into wild and build somewhere your own town and dont care about main race city's you have freedom but thats only for those who mostly are evil pk in small clans.

Majority will not have that much freedom as many thinks they have.

Big strong clans will organise and will take full advantage of what the game aloud them to do and expand and become stronger, so killing own race is then no option.

Freedom even in darkfall is limited.

rofl... no.... just no.

obviously both sides would have to vote for ally status, for the ally status to be sanctioned. I thought that would have been obvious. Also obvious is that if two races are sanctioned (official) allies, and one of them declares war on the other, a state of war automatically exists between the two.

Anyways, i am not in favor of the OP's idea since, as i already stated, it completely disregards the painstakingly detailed lore.

I was just trying to flesh out the OP's original concept.

There will be player-run politics for whole factions, but I don't think they'll be able to change diplomatic standings. That would be cool if they could. I guess the devs might figure it imbalanced. I think player-made lore should be the focal point. If we want Dwarves allied with Alfar and Humans fighting Elves, what does that hurt? This is a type of rigidness that should be shied away from in Sandbox MMOs. but maybe this isn't the time for lore innovation :P

Too late to change this, they have made this game for an eternity. It is as it is and thats the way it will be. Just wait and see. I know I'm right =D

To have this idea work, we need some way for each race to make decisions as a whole, or as a few that represent the whole. In other words we need some sort of underlying government for each race.

I would support government, but only if its done right. The last thing we need is "xI_R_1337x" to be the king of all humans and fuck us over by declaring war on everyone... Maybe kings can have month long reigns(more or less) with week long elections? (Scale election period and reign based on testing?)

Something for a later update?

well basically guilds are small governments. you have leaders, officers and regular members. and the recruits are kind of like immigrants trying to become members of your society.

I know but races still effect the game without change, it would be nice if we could make the orcs semi-extinct by taking over their main city. ;)

It will add litttle to the game other than destroy the only stability the core game adds.

mabey they should make faction hits only against your own clan and allies of your clan. that way the orks would be so busy fighting over which clan is more evil that their enemies could keep them in check.

It depends how its done. What if dedicated GMs become kings, or if they oversee the political process maybe they can make the game work well.

There will be a few servers so at least if one is a bit fucked up you can switch.

This idea should at least be tested somehow.

I agree. Not something to stall the release over, in fact, probably not worthy of being looked at until 1 or 2 years down the line when balance issues have been hammered out.

Interesting though, if done right. That would be the essence of playermade lore.

ie. 2 years down the road, when Dwarves and Alfar are allied, you'll have seasoned forumfall vets mumbling about how such an alliance would never even be considered 'back in the old days'... then, few months later, after the Alfar's need/use of the dwarves had elapsed... all out warr.

but i've never been a huge lore-nut.

I was thinking just like an occupation thing, you can only capture enemy race cities. As a member of the race, you could choose on a personal level to truce/ally with the invading race or rebel against them. Making it easier for the races to eventually retake their capitals.

I think it would be cool to be forced outlaws. To become a pirate or something because your home is being occupied :D Or a guerrilla warrior. That would be sweet.
