So, out of the blue - literally- my HDD went kaboom with bad sectors and shit. I was lucky to be able to at least backup all my data.

It was a Samsung Spinpoint F1 500GB. Anyone else has heard of reliability issues with Samsung HDDs?

I replaced it with a Hitachi 500GB. Was not my first choice but it was ready to deliver in the shop and I didn't want to wait.

Seagate...I remember many years back I had experienced problems - though nothing so serious - with a Seagate HDD.

WD was what I had in mind but I guess I'll have to see how the Hitachi behaves...

You should have gone with a Seagate. I hope the Hitachi won't cause you problems. And Samsung? It must have been pretty cheap to opt for that one...

not really, they are all about the same price, 60Euro...I got the Samsung because according to benchmarks it was faster, with a 32MB buffer, not to save money. HDDs is the last thing I'm gonna save money on.

Samsungs are known to be POS.

Seagate as mentioned are good drives, I prefer Western Digital, never have an issue with them and I've owned over 15 of them over the years.

BTW Hitachi drives are POS also. Maxtor too, they run too hot.

Hitachi is even worse than Samsung.
Should've gone for Seagate/WD
