Is Bill Maher infallible or something to you? You sound a lot like him in the "What if you're wrong?" "What if YOU'RE wrong?" sort of way. Not a real argument. I don't understand the point of this movie--unless he's trying to help religion be more peaceful, he's not doing anything at all, because religious people aren't just going to give up faith over a movie that, as far as I can tell, has a belligerent agenda against faith.
Why can't people understand that, once people have formed their world views for themselves, there's very little beyond leading by genuine example that is going to change anything. And Bill Maher is a horrible example. I haven't seen much of his work, I'm only going by this trailer. I guess I should say in this trailer Bill Maher is a horrible example.

Something must be happening(such as people seeing through religious bull) seeing as how atheism is quickly growing. Besides he makes some good points(why doesn't god just destroy the devil and all evil?) if you can answer that and maintain the all knowing, peacefull, infallible, loving, omnipotent god idealogy then I will bow to you.

I liked Bill when he hosted Politicly Incorrect. He claimed to be libertarian and could make a decent arguement.
Ever since he lost his job there he's turned into a bitter, partisan democrat, liberal, hippy, douche.
Now he's just an angry, pathetic little man.
I don't think I need to see a movie to know that people who think Jesus had superpowers because they read it in a book are retarded
Ever since he lost his job there he's turned into a bitter, partisan democrat, liberal, hippy, douche.
Agreed. Jon Stewart too.
They're both funny, but most of their political jokes rely on their audiences to be entirely ignorant except for what they see on TV.

He's making a movie about himself going around treating people like idiots and spreading religious intolerance, that much I'm informed about.
But I am fairly uninformed about him, I've seen very little of him and don't know what he's about. Feel free to enlighten me. Biased though? I had no like or dislike of him before I saw that trailer, yet, you call me biased when you actually don't know why I think he's an idiot or know anything about me....
If I'm at a park with a pond in the middle of it, and see something that looks like a duck and quacks, I'm going to assume it's a duck, but faith has nothing to do with it.
Here's another assumption you can tear me up on if I'm wrong. He seems to be an Athiest. And that's the one belief I struggle to respect because there is just as much scientific evidence that Santa Claus is real as there is to disprove the existence of god. Counter-culture is becoming increasingly known and popular in this country in terms of film and music, I think he's trying to capitalize on that by looking and sounding cute to stroke the respective egos.
In other words, he's talking about religion and beliefs but I don't think he's trying to enlighten anyone about anything. He definitely seems like an idiot, and I don't find what he has to say all that new or interesting, so what's the incentive to look closer.

Personally I'll see the film since Bill Maher is IMO a great comedian. I wouldn't take this movie as a Documentary though since it's probably going to be as twisted as Michael Moore's movies.

Uh...? I know what Atheism is. I used to be one. I'm atm more along the lines of Charles Darwin "Tooth-fairy agonostic". Any God is just as realistic as the tooth-fairy since there are just as much proof for both.

I have lived a quite comfortable life as well with my education. 2 cars and a truck, one being a race car, a house and soon to be a new business. Currently unemployed due to the construction layoffs in So Cal but I am still pulling more then enough to live with unemployment and have plenty in my savings.
As for dropping out. Kinda hard to stay in school when...
1: Its not a challenge
2: You move 4 times in a year
3: Each school was more fucked up then the last ( lovely So Cal ).
Cant complain though, sure, I worked my ass off between my job and my racing ( to the tune of 70-80 hours a week ) but I made a decent living at $60k a year and I was doing something I love to do.

Education level isnt the key to being successful but it sure as hell helps.
I can roof a house, I can do the plumbing and electrical, I can insulate it. 4 years ago, I could not change the tire on a car. Since then, I have done all the work to mine, including the transmission work and fully building the engine (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Go9gKjsK-JU) along with the tuning of the car. I managed in 4 short years to take a 190hp car to the 600-650hp mark ( dont know 100% on the HP I have not had it on a Dyno yet and video is old turbo setup ). Next year I am going to be forced to get NHRA Certified in the car.
Sure I have worked about 30 different jobs but I am a jack of all trades, I could do pretty much anything I want, from car repair to home repair, designing signs on a computer to repo man, from escort driver to forklift driver :D
I really spread myself out in lots of different fields for a while. :D

yeah I know, anti-religion....their system of beliefs is one that relies on the existence of other 'said wrong' systems of beliefs. That's a lil too much for me to wrap my head around to take seriously. It looks like typical rebellious adolescence to me, but I'll admit it's one prejudice i have.

I don't quite understand...why do you hang out with people that talk about God and Jesus, and they try to convert you? I mean seriously, I don't hang out with guys that brag about how many bitches or drug rings they have going on, while they're trying to get me involved.
Don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of evangelicals, but they do try to convert because they honestly believe they're doing good. Is it right, or wrong? I'd rather them try to convert someone to christianity than pillaging or raping villages...so whatever. There is such a thing as 'no thanks', and you don't have to take offense if someone says your soul will burn in hell if you don't believe X. Yet you 'tear' into someone like that? Come on, THAT's the hypocrisy I see with atheists.
Atheism teaches nothing, it does not (at face value) instill the golden rule, utilitarian beliefs, or even absolute moralism. At some point, atheists have to pick a moral code up from somewhere. Could you imagine a world without a christian or jewish (or even some other long-standing religion) basis of morals? We'd essentially be stuck in tribes. Hell, I don't know much about eastern religions, but even they instill some morals. To sit here and say that 'religion has caused more strife than it has caused good' is an unprovable argument.
I'm going to make a prediction that the next 'holocaust' will involve atheists at the helm. Just you wait and see. As the atheism 'it' crowd starts to teach their kids their trivial moral code based on 'good faith', we will see how it all works out. Remember the first step to tyranny is to remove faith/religion all together, but somehow most collectivists even adopt this mentality.

When I was in highschool I had alot of friends who were into jesus. its just kinda how it happened in my small town. Most of my "friends" didn't act like idiots, most of the time it was my friends, friends.
also my parents really tried to push me into religion when I was young. it all stoped when I was asked to leave bible camp when I was 11 or 12 because I asked to many questions.

+1 to that.
I am an atheist and that is how I live my life.
To base my life on false hopes and dreams though, I cant do it. I did not believe in fairy tales when I was a child and there is no reason to now. I base my life on what is known not what may be if I close my eyes and wish hard enough.

I was forced into religious schools when I was a child and punished ( time out etc ) for asking questions. The one thing religion doesnt want is questioning because when you question and they cant answer, they get defensive. Religion has no answers, all they have is made up stories to attempt to answer the questions that they themselves cant answer. Religion will never have the answer because its a ancient system for understanding the modern universe and every day it shows its age more and more. Its like religion is fighting a war with science when science has 4th gen stealth aircraft and religion is using Sopwith Camels.

Remember Bill Gates? Dropped out of high school. :D

Morals and ethics aren't reserved only for religion. It's called natural law, which can be found in every social animal. For a society to function, certain rules need to be followed. For example, the last 6 of the 10 commandments are natural laws all having to do with taking something that belongs to someone else. In the animal kingdom, you see that corvids, just a particular example but you can find it all over the animal kingdom, remember other corvids that steal and assault them. Males of various species assault other males who they suspect are mating or trying to mate with their females. The list goes on.
saying religion is the base for morality doesn't fly when evidence is shown all over the natural world that deviant behavior in a social group is not tolerated. Next are you going to tell me that social animals are religious which is why they follow a social code?

no
ive heard him before, and based on the preview it looks like his typical stuff. like someone said, the movies not gonna make people drop their faith, its for atheists to have a circle jerk and pretend they have all the answers. same for movies like the passion of the christ
No athiest will ever pretend to have all the answers, part of atheism is accepting that you will never know the 'answers' because said answers are just beyond us. We will never understand them because our perception of reality is conditioned only to what we experience and we don't often experience conditions before space-time. So it is impossible for an athiest or a christian to know the truth with complete certainty.
Questions like 'How did it all begin?' can only truely be answered with something along the lines of 'From the evidence we have aquired, we believe blah blah blah <Insert Belief>'. But the Christian view that one day God made the universe doesn't appear to have much evidence except a two thousand year old book...
K.
Unfortunately it's quite hard to explain that to a lot of people and I think that's what this film is about.

For all of his self proclaimed "progressiveness", Maher does not seek truth, but rather validation of his own beliefs. Rather like a religious fundamentalist if you ask me...
If he wants to talk about Religion in government, I am right with him as an ardent supporter of the 1st Ammendment. But in doing a movie like this he just reveals how much of a simpleton he is.

I had no like or dislike of him before I saw that trailer, yet, you call me biased when you actually don't know why I think he's an idiot or know anything about me....
I see a middle-eastern man walking down the sidewalk. He's wearing a turban, and carrying a concealed weapon.
By your logic, he is a terrorist?
Here is the interview (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CWiASiqDdU).
He says that he doesn't have a problem with people with faith, but with people or interpret it literally. "I am simply asking questions they have not been confronted with before". He also says that he sees Atheism as a mirror of blind faith, as both have a stead hold belief in something where there is evidence that the other side may be true. Basically, you could call him an agnostic, but his main point of view is "We don't know".
This is the only interview I could find, some of the quotes I just stated were from the Daily Show interview.

Fact is, there is evidence supporting evolution being how we got here and not spontaneous creation. When you take all the evidence the weighs in realities favor it would be stupid to believe in a invisible super friend in the sky just like it would be stupid to believe the world is still flat.

I am a reasonable and overbearing person myself, but if someone were to do something "unspeakable" to my family (especially my children), I would not only find it hard to forgive, I would think it entirely irresponsible and heartless if I were to do so. How could I fail in my determination to protect those who are dear to me, and then turn to the person who has abused them and say; "If you are truly sorry, I will forgive you."?
The fact that (the Christian) God can find it in his heart to forgive anyone of anything - regardless of how horrendous this thing may be - seems not so much an indication of his love of man, but rather of his utter indifference to mankind.

The first mistake you're making is that you are trying to put yourself in his shoes.
While he is forgiving of the repentant, he is wrathful to the unrepentant. There are a number of stories that tell of him smiting some sinful city or man.

Correction, Christmas was made by the CHURCH to contend with the pagan holiday that fell around Christmas time.
I am atheist, however I do not feel religion should be abolished, at least not yet. I do feel it has absolutely NO place in government and should be abolished from there. But I do feel it gives a lot of people the guidance they require to make it through the day even though according to most of these peoples religions they're going to hell regardless.
The connection between Valentine's Day(Love), Easter(Sex), and Christmas(Birth) still can't be disregarded jut because competing holidays were made. We all still carry out those pagan traditions even if the reason why we are told to celebrate them now has to do with Christianity.

Oh, it is not something I am really that serious about; I know that many different interpretations and angles can be brought in, that would change the picture - I just have personal difficulties understanding how people of faith (before they acquired faith) could actually listen to the "tenets of faith" and think: "Gee, that sounds like a nice Deity, I wont to meet him."
- Think of it like this; you see a dish that looks and smells absolutely disgusting. You meet a person who says; "I have tasted it, and it was the best thing I have ever known."
I can understand that he would want more, since he obviously likes it; I just can't imagine how he could have put it in his mouth the first time..

There are other things then religion that caused war aswell, but it is a big part of our history and our progress.

I would disagree. Internet was developed due to war. Many roads between cities especially in Europe were developed due to war. This is because nations wish to compete if you'd like, to keep the uper hand on each other. Nuclear energy was developed after the A-bomb. The greatest leaps in technology have been during times of war(maybe because there's very short periods of peace)

Most Christians who know anything about church history would agree with this. Jesus was most probably born in the September October time frame. The early Christian church did not celebrate Jesus's birth due to a strong focus on his death as the significant event.

If intelligence is the mastery of complex ideas - then there are plenty of intelligent religious people. :)
Yes but the religion itself isn't intelligent. They use their intelligence towards trying to rationalize an unintelligent series of notions.

Some faiths believe to translate the bible literally.
A true agnostic will believe that "we don't know", but a true agnostic would also not belittle or look down on other people's systems of beliefs because he would respect them as equally viable as his own. No one knows, so who's to say they aren't right...right?
People who don't know what to believe and dislike religion or atheism tend to just call themselves agnostic, but it does take conviction to be a real agnostic.
So, I'd have to say he seems to be an agnostic acting like an atheist.

What purpose does evil serve? Would a god have to test him humans in eden when he already knows the outcome?
Why did he, create his angels so perfect, yet failed miserably when one became evil?
Why did he not forsee this devil arising in the angel and end it? Wouldn't he forsee the angel becoming evil eventually and make him perfect, that is if he really is omnipotent?
Those are real questions by the way. I'd enjoy them being answered
If I'm at a park with a pond in the middle of it, and see something that looks like a duck and quacks, I'm going to assume it's a duck, but faith has nothing to do with it.
It should be something like this.
I am at a park with a pond in the middle of it, and see something that looks like a duck and quacks.
The other people in the park dont see the duck because in reality there is no duck. I start to convince them that it is real and they just have to believe that there is a duck in the park.
When there are enough of ppl believing that there is a duck in that pond I cant argue about it, they are the majority and they are ofc right

Me, thinking he was joking around with me, told him I was going to spend it in his mom.

Is your whole argument athiests and agnostics either have no morals, or would have none without Christianity or Judaism? I'd write more, but it's a waste of time considering how stupid you are.

Look up how many of the top 10 billionaires graduated from college. That number will surprise most of you.

EE;1759750']I might have him confused with someone else then. I could have swore I read that but looking up the info you are right.
Dave Thomas ( WENDYS ) dropped out of high school but yeah, that old fuck was born in the 30's hehe.
Funny that you would bring up Dave Thomas because he was a Christian who credited faith and trust in God for helping him be successful.

He was the first person who popped up on my google search, he was a hockey fan and made some damned good burgers. I forgave him for some of those flaws that he had. I am sure now he realizes that the emptiness of nothingness wasnt worth the belief system.

It's true that they believe in "whatever isn't from God, is from the Devil", but you can't go on and saying they will hate and mistreat you. They'll certainly look down upon you, but at the same time pray for you soul in these little prayer groups.
I don't buy that. Why would they pray for a lost soul, that they believe is going to hell anyway? That's pointless. If you believe someone is going to hell, it doesn't matter how you treat them, because they're already damned...you have justification to do whatever you want to them. They might as well be less than an animal as far as the Christian is concerned.
This is part of why so many Atheists are so aggressive towards religious beliefs. You talk about how great this and that is, and forget completely about the psychological and social impacts of the belief as whole. The bible justifies the very worst kinds of human behavior.

While I will likely watch this movie for the hell of it, I'd be more inclined to watch if Dawkins or someone similar were making it. Maher has a tendency to be self-absorped, and his arguments suffer from bias as a result.

It should be something like this.
I am at a park with a pond in the middle of it, and see something that looks like a duck and quacks.
The other people in the park dont see the duck because in reality there is no duck. I start to convince them that it is real and they just have to believe that there is a duck in the park.
When there are enough of ppl believing that there is a duck in that pond I cant argue about it, they are the majority and they are ofc right
Religious beliefs and culture will shape your entire life. Depending where you are born will shape your entire life.
Religion is just a big duckpond with a invisible duck in it.
This is probably why I'm so high strung all the time but...
why are they right?
in my mind they are still wrong(no matter how many of them there are believing it), although quantum physics might have something to say about that....

Do you know how people form their world views, opinions and beliefs? Based on ongoing self-education and experiences. That's why people learn from the moment they are born until the moment they die. If you decide that you know everything and you refuse to open your mind for new ideas and possibilities, your life ceases to have any point. As conscious beings we progress and evolve through continuous evaluation and study of the world, psychological and philosophical realities. If we don't, we are nothing more than instinct driven animals.
Having absolute faith and certainty into unknown certainly does not help you evolve and progress as a human being since you lock your mind out of other possibilities and concepts.

 You just asked the big no no questions.
There are several and I'm not linking Jesus Camp. I got into an argument with a chick where she said Satan was using educated people to disprove the word of God and that what they said about history, evolution, and contradictions is all Satan's work. I just sort of sat there in disbelief at first because I thought she was kidding.
Education is the work of the Devil! Flee to the caves, here's your clubs back guys.

I saw it last night. Maher was really arrogant in the movie, but he did bring up a few good points and make people generally look like assholes. He even made a senator say "you don't need to pass an IQ test to be in the senate".
It is a good movie if you just want to laugh about religion though.

Which christians believe this?
People like Hyena mentioned...Fundy's, Jesus camp kids, etc etc. Lots and lots of Christians do think this way.
And probably even many people in forumfall. Merrin being one example and my primary inspiration.

That's pretty much the point of it. It's a philosophical comedy...not a fucking debate club on the big screen.

i remember wanting to do stuff with friends and my parents thinking it was stupid. they would always say if everyone in the world jumped off a cliff would you do it too?
my problem with religon is this. all we know about these things are what men have written down and said is the word of god. well people lie, alot.
the jews took other religeons before them and changed it around to center around them and made judaism.
the christians took judaism and changed it as well as adding some more religeons and made cristianity. before them there was no satan, no hell.
in the early days of christianity it was only a small sect of jews. their numbers declining they started bringing non jews into the fold to increase the numbers.
there were many groups of christians all who believed different things. the emperor of rome ordered the groups to get together and decide on one system to believe. and created the first bible. this one group of christians became the roman catholic church.
in creating this bible they took jewish and christian texts they believed best represented what they wanted and banned and destroyed the rest.
now knowing all this i have a really hard time believing anything someone sayes waving a bible in my face and declaring it as the word of god. call me what your will. but if there is a god and i die and stand before him and argue my case. and he or she cant look at me and admit that it is all a bit fucked up then i will gladly burn in hell.
