Does anyone play?

I just finished my first full game with all the expansions. I was playing as Schleswig-Holstein.

By 1820 I had conquered Jylland and Fyn in Denmark, Hamburg, Meckelenburg, Ivory Coast, Gold Coast, Grain Coast, Konian, Wasuju, Massina, Timbuktu, Kumassi, Jenne, Dendi and more of West Africa.

Lubeck (state of Meckelen) was a vassal as was Brandenburg.

I finished as a Constitutional Republic. I had a "tarnished reputation", bad boy rating of 96. I was rated "the greatest" amongst countries.

I fought:

Denmark
Sweden
Hanover
Austria
Prussia
Netherlands
Brunswick
Russia
Ottoman Empire
Morocco
Algiers
Mali
Tripoli
Funji
Swahili
Mughal Empire
and some crappy West African nations who I can't remember.

All in all its a pretty awesome, very epic game. Much better than Civ IV imo. If you're into historical strategy I'd suggest picking it up.

Its very much like a re-arranged Medieval Total War. There a trade-off of player controlled battles for increased detail and complexity of campaign play.

Yea I was playing like crazy a while back. It's pretty fun but I'm actually more fond of the second one, if only it weren't for the damn Civil war event, nothing sucks quite as much as when you're involved in an epic war and suddenly 100 000 of your troops join the rebels and half your provinces rebel. Still EUIII is fun, but I think you get a bit too much of an advantage if you win the colonisation race, once you bring in 3000 gold annually it's not much of a challenge anymore and when you get done upgrading all provinces and pull in 5000 it somehow feels like everyone else should just give up and join your empire.

Yeah, I had +/- 0 manpower until I got a few territories under my belt. Then it got better. I actually find it harder to play larger nations because there's too much to keep track off e.g. England.

Whats better about the 2nd one?

I tried to get into it but it was more like work than fun to me. Felt like I was trying to learn a very complex application rather than playing a game.

Yeah I used to be a gigantic Civ fan but once I picked up EUIII I never touched Civ or MTW again. I like playing as either a German power like Mecklenburg/Brandenburg or go for one of the Christian Russian states.

I also highly recommend trying Hearts of Iron 2, it's made by the same company and I enjoy it just as much as EU3

It takes some time getting used to but once you do it can be tons of fun. You can usually have loads of fun with it. Things usually happen in different ways also, although France usually dominats the game once they defeat Burgundy which I have never ever seen them fail at unless I personally play Burgundy. But there can be some crazy things, one game I was in Lithuania had claimed vast territories in Syria and Libya alongside with Sudan after they kicked the living shit out of Egypt.

Yeah, I'm also really fond of the smaller German states, they're easier to play and more interesting as well. Of course, they will never be powerhouses like France/Austria/Britain but they can do alright if you know how to use them.

I like to put on Hohenfriedberger Marsch and just have fun in the little local wars... auf, Ansbach-Dragoner...auf, Ansbach-Bayreuth.

Then again, you can always colonize and slaughter the natives without too much trouble (is it me or are African natives more numerous/ferocious than Native Americans? They always rebel on me too).

I've got Heart's of Iron: Doomsday on my drive but haven't played for ages. Now that game i found just a little too daunting. For the most part I just chose tiny nations and tried to be unimportant enough to invade. Never achieved anything in that game.

I once took the papal states to control all of Europe (well parts of France and Spain were vasals), parts of western Asia and North africa, All of North and South America, the Pacific Islands and Eastern china, it was an interesting game, though it was before any expansions and later in the game I broke a lot of the world up into vasals just because I got borred having to move hundreds of thousands of troops per turn to take care of rebellions (and constant war on my boarders due to my bad boy which was probably close to 200).

They can be you just need to play them right, I have taken a few of them to control Europe and the new world, you just have to be smart (and sometimes lucky) diplomatically.

Exactly, about 30 - 40 turns before game's end i started getting rebellion everywhere :(

it was a lot easier to handle pre-NA

But if you have good stability and low war exhaustion you will barely get any rebellions even in a huge empire in IA. The other option is huge armies.

In the end I had some pretty decent armies but what helped me the most was a good navy. I was able to block up every enemy port which ment they would concede even without a land battle. Just blockade/embargo their ass into submission. Thats what I did with Denmark for years and eventually they couldn't afford their upkeep because they had no trade in/out and so they just settled and I got Jylland.

I love this game.

I am currently in the middle of a game as Poland. I've annexed almost all the Teutonic provinces (Teutons are now my vassal), all of Lithuania (peacefully), Brandenburg and some (peacefully) and some random provinces from Crimea and Riga. I've only just started colonising the new world, although I don't have Quest for the New World so I only colonise whatever becomes available. Right now I am focusing on building up my economy as I have expanded very quickly and ducats are rolling in slowly as Nationalism is still in effect in many provinces.

I don't have any expansions yet, but I will probably grab them both once I complete this game, I heard there was a bundle pack being released in October, but I'm not sure if that information is merely speculation.

I recommend trying to play a game through all the paradox games.
You can use the save games from one game with the other to create a truly epic campaign.
It goes like this:

Crusader Kings - Europa Universalis 2 (or 3 if you want that) - Victoria - Hearts of Iron 2
This will make the campagin last 1066 to 1964 over 4 games.

What!? Really?

AFAIR, Hearts of Iron II was a completely different game (mechanics etc)?

All the games a different somehow, since they all focus on a different timeperiod.
Crusader Kings focus more on dynasty building and "house" realtions and such. Keeping your vassals happy and all that.

Victoria focus more on the economic part etc..

Hearts of Iron focus on ww2 and the grand strategy around that, with all the research involved.

all in all you get to develop your nation for 900 years through 4 games, I cant think of anything more epic then thath.

A unique feature of the game is that when the game ends in 1453, the player has the ability to save the game and be able to continue it using Europa Universalis II. This has the effect of extending the time period of the game from 1066 to 1820. From Europa Universalis II the player can save the game and continue it in Victoria, and from Victoria it can be continued in Hearts of Iron II, in effect extending the time period of a game to a maximum of 1066 to 1964

It seemed too much like hard work to me and did not seem to have much polish, the way things moved about and fought also made me want to vomit a bit.

I still have it + expansions, is it really worth me trying to get into in the same way say Dwarf Fortress is worth the effort?

Or should just stick to DotA?

Its not eye candy thats for sure but it is an amazing historical strategy/simulation.

Yes

There is a mod for the file to work in EU3 as its meant for EU2, but yeah, the save file goes on.

Playing that, Victoria: Revolutions, Hearts Of Iron 2, WAR and Knights Of Honor 24/7. :D

Made the Swedish Empire stretch from it's northern parts down to Spain/Italy. Epic sight.
