There are so many different forms of greatness.

While I'm not a fan of the Rolling Stones, I have to admire their greatness. How many bands can stay together as long as they have?

The Beatles? This needs no explanation.

When a band's first album is full of pirated songs I can't think of them as great (Led Zeppelin.)

Wu-Tang? They changed the business aspect of hip-hop considerably.

Grateful Dead? They've played more shows than just about any other musicians alive.

I'm not slurpin' on any of the above, just looking at their accomplishments from an unbiased perspective.

because "the business aspect" sounds so good in my headphones....

Looks like someone missed the part that reads "there are so many different aspects of greatness."

Shit man, the title itself doesn't even clarify greatness.

The greatest douchebags?
The greatest looking?
The greatest copycats?

I happened to name a few that were great a different ways.

And yes, the business aspect of music is a very huge factor. Have you ever wondered why radio stations cram the same shit down your ear canal day after day? Have you ever wondered how MC Hammer got into such bad trouble that he filed bankruptcy? Willy Nelson got into some big trouble because he wasn't a sound businessman (yes paying taxes is part of doing business.) I could go on and on....

Wu-Tang avoided getting raped by the major labels, sold millions of records and were savvy enough to use their profits to finance the records of individual members as well as other artists.

If Wu-Tang didn't change the way business was done you can forget about ever hearing a lot of other hip-hop artists that came after them and succeeded because of their entrepreneurial skillz.

If Wu-Tang were raped by the labels would we ever have heard solo albums from ODB, Method Man, Raekwon or Ghost?

It's a legitimate question.

Mine is Streetlight Manifesto right now. But they still have lots to prove.

It's hard to say what the greatest band ever is. Do we measure it with personal taste, albums sold, influence, musical ability? Hard to define what makes a band great.

I guess I would have to say The Beatles. Their influence and popularity is pretty unmatched. Definitely not my favorites, though. Far from.

I'd tell yall my favorite band, and thus, the band I think is the greatest band ever.... but then you'd all just be like:

"Hahahaha no they fuckin' suck, _____ is so much more ______ than they can even dream of being"

And then I'd be like:

"Seriously it's just personal opinion... you can't really prove who is the greatest when it comes to music, it's all a matter of opinion"

But still I'd be met with:

"Haha fuck you dude you are fucking stupid because I hate you and I hate the music you like! ***!"

So I'll keep it to myself :(.... But yea, you are all wrong so far.

There is no greatest band. I thought I'd give a critique of some of the bands mentioned.

Rush's songs are all sloppy and Geddy Lee just annoys me with his vocals. Working Man is definitely their most admirable song mostly because of Alex Lifeson.

Pink Floyd would have to be my personal favourite of the of above mentioned. Their music adapted over time to changes and crisis' the band faced. Syd Barrett was an incredibly influential and intuitive guitar players ever, constantly experimenting with guitar sounds to help produce some of the band's trademark "Spacey" themes. The band had a lot of very deep, emotional and emotional songs. Band members like Gilmour helped prove that it's not how fast you can play the instrument, it's how you play it that counts.

Motorhead had it's moments. The musicians are all of decent skill. Motorhead was of huge influence and was one of the first bands that pioneered thrash metal.

Pantera was also a legendary band and a pinnacle in power metal. Dimebag's guitar playing lit up the stage and the music just made you want to get up and kick-box an infant.

Led Zeppelin... Before I start let me just say I like Led Zeppelin, I think they are a good band, and I do listen to them. Led Zeppelin had it easy. I'm sure any Zeppelin fan knows that Led Zeppelin is basically The Yardbirds. The Yardbirds already had established success and Page's name was well known by the late 60s in the rock 'n' roll scene. The band members began to quit, leaving Jimmy, who invited Jon, John, and Robert. And yes, a lot of their songs were pirated, including Stairway To Heaven. Although I respect Jimmy Page as a musician, I don't respect him as a person.

The Rolling Stones. An amazing band. Since the start they had the attitude for success and were an instant hit. The band went through few hardships and hell, are still touring 40 years later. They weren't the best in terms of instrumental skill, but were still all great musicians. A great rock 'n' roll band, although once again not the best.

The Beatles. Seen by a lot of people as the greatest rock band ever. Yes, they were amazing. They had so many hits, including the first song ever to reach number 1 twice. Though nothing amazing, they were pretty good musicians, especially Paul McCartney and Lennon. However their live playing was quite bad. But their music was the heart and soul of an entire decade, loved and embraced by people worldwide. They were one of the first bands to use their fame to spread a message, and that was to stop war, corruption, religion, and anything else plaguing society.

No I didn't miss it...

I have 2 degrees in music and took several music businesses courses while finishing my masters at NIU. So, I do not need to sit around "wondering why radio stations cram the same shit down my ear canals."

The point of my post was actually that business is slowly killing music imvho. Sure, there are individuals that are doing positive things, but by and large, the machine pushes thoughtless dribble, while great music and new genres fall under the radar.

And for the record I love Wu-Tang clan. I just disagree with nominating a group for their business strategum rather than something dealing with their music.

I would say Moody Blues for their super clean rhythms, ELP because they introduced the masses to so many new sounds courtesy of Emerson's keyboards, But above anyone, I think Miles Davis (specifically the Birth of the Cool era) really progressed music......... The Beatles were an incredible impact, but I was trying to go with some groups that might not get listed.

Queen

Rush is an absolutely fantastic band, and still rocking, one of my top 3.

The other two slots... 2nd is AC/DC, just purely because of uncompromised rock. Some may say its the fact that they don't change that makes them a poor band, but I think that's damn impressive to keep the same (awesome and fun) sound for over 30 years of musical evolution.

And number one... Queen. As far as pure talent and musical skill, there is no other I can really think of. Every member of the band was multi-instrumentally talented, 3/4 could hold their own singing, and they all wrote songs (with Brian and Freddie doing most of them). Freddie had a charisma unmatched, and they were at the time voted clearly as the best live performing band. They invented arena rock. They've sold an insane number of albums, and been at the top of the charts longer than any band in history. Their sound evolved over the years and always (except for the Hot Space funk album) stayed top notch.

Great quality, amazing craftsmanship, very professional. I don't recall them having any drug scandals, or crappy drama of that sort.

What I am curious about though, is many many people overlook them, and don't give them the credit that I personally (these are all opinions people) think they deserve. So why lump them in with an overhyped British band they long ago passed, and .... teen pop bands?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjyka1gkodo

Honorable mentions!! Boston, They Might Be Giants, Pink Floyd (haven't listened to a lot of their stuff because its too depressing, but one day I'll just going to sit and let the albums play, because most of the people who share musical taste with me, and who I respect greatly, consider them their favorite band), and hell, let's throw Meatloaf in there.

P.S. Korn and Amon Amarth are terrible, you call that screaming music? To each their own I guess..

And your record company's reputation will be damaged when everybody is copying the well choreographed dance moves, while we crash out our 'ill' bass lines, juxtaposed with smooth theremin riffs.

AS mentioned before .. really depends what you mean exactly by "greatest"

But .. The Beatles, Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynard, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones all without a doubt deserve to be mentioned IMO. (even the more recent Nirvana)

Im mean, here it is 2008, and they are still selling albums and being played on the radio. Whether you personally like their music or not, you must admit thats a huge accomplishment.

Myself, I gotta say ... Nightwish!!! with Lacuna Coil being a close second :P

These guys are awesome and even better live. But I'm refering to the old Nightwish, before the split up, when Tarja was still with them. The new lead singer is just .. bleh , OK.

Don't know how to describe if ya never heard 'em before ..
