What should I do for exercise?

In case you aren't up to speed with my life (and you should be!):

The doctor said I need to wear this knee brace for 4 weeks, and can't do anything that stresses my knee more than walking.

So far I'm just planning on walking a mile or so a day, and doing push-ups, sit-ups and pull-ups.

What else is there that doesn't strain your knee?

I guess continuing your strict regimine of blowing yourself is out.

I dunno, get that old lady workout video where she sits in a chair and never breaks a sweat?

Swimming and biking are both lower impact on your knees than walking, I think. Don't take my word for it, but it is something you can look into.

Get a mountain bike, and start working on your pedaling fitness on the road. Once your knees are in a bit better shape, start hitting the trails.

great fun, great workout.

I am pretty sure HC is right on the swimming route, it is the best whole body exercise you can get out there. If you plan on staying dry though, pick up a few inexpensive weights for arm exercise, just makes sure you have a good supporting chair the will keep the strain off of your legs while working with them; of course, you could always use them laying down.

I don't know...mountain biking seems like it would be intense for a knee injury, I don't mountain bike though.

I agree with the push-ups and situps. Also try hand stand push ups for shoulders. Try and use your body weight to shred yourself up.

I just googled http://www.sport-fitness-advisor.com/core-strength-training.html and the exercises they show could be less stressful on the knee too and help strengthen core muscle groups. You could work on balance and strength too like handstands, planches, etc.

Check w/ your doctor, but swimming might be alright. It doesn't impact the knee, though it could stress it so I'd check w/ him first. (Just call, no need to make an apt.)

If he says it is stressful you could still swim, and just not kick your legs. it would make the upper body workout really intense, but would also be pretty damn tiring I'm sure.

I was thinking about biking, but I'm not sure if the fast past would make up for the low impact in terms of strain put on the joint.

How does the below sound?

* Stationary Biking: Adjust bike seat so that your leg is nearly straight when in the down position on the pedal. Start pedaling with the bike on light resistance and pedal forwards at 90 rpm (rotations per minute). Continue pedaling for as long as you can without pain. Build up over time to pedaling for 15 minutes.

* Prone Hip Extension: Lie on your stomach. Tighten the muscle in the front of your thigh and lift your leg 3 to 5 inches off the floor keeping your knee locked. Hold 1 second then slowly lower your leg to the ground. Repeat 20 times.

* Prone Hamstring Curls: Lie on your stomach. Bend the knee of the injured leg so that your heel moves toward your buttock. Hold 1 second then slowly lower your leg to the ground. Repeat 20 times.

* Partial Squats: Stand in front of a chair with your feet about shoulder width apart. Slowly lower your buttocks halfway to the chair. Stop and hold this position for 1 second then return to standing. Repeat 20 times.

I might just do walking for this week, as I am not yet walking normally (still favoring my other leg a bit), but might try the above after that.

I wouldn't recommend biking, but swimming seems viable.

Did he actually ask you to walk to train your knee?

I wouldn't do that if I was you. Take a trip on the bike instead, or swim, so much better for ithe knee, and I speak from experience.
Did almost the same thing as you did, except I broke everything in there. ^^

Was on the operating table for 6 hours, and I'm going in for a new operation now next week, 1,5 years after it happened just because I exercised the wrong way.

Wrong, the best exercise is biking and swimming. Walking and running is a nono.

Biking can't be good for somebody with a bum knee. Swimming uses most of your muscles, and in his situation, I believe it would be more beneficial than biking, as he wouldn't want to redamage it. Try reading his post next time.

Pffft, at least your not the one with a fractured spine...

Basically just exclude everything that requires excessive use of your legs and do everything else. Walking is always good, but running is a no-no. Push-ups and blablabla are all good. Get a bowflex and be a real man.

I never said that biking was better then swimming, cuz it aint.
I've got a much worse injury to my knee then he have, so I should know what works and what don't. Biking is a good exercise and the best way to build up all your muscles around the knee, thus it stabilizes great if you don't overdo it.

My advice would be to buy a road bike, not a mountain bike, not at least from the start.

I was extremely active until my knee spontaneously swelled up 5 months ago while I was in Japan. What I did to keep in shape was work out my upper body a lot and swim daily. That seemed to do the trick until I was better and could start running again.
