Does anyone know any good programs that actually work? Most of the time they are bullshit. Anyway just looking for some specific names. Thanks in advance.

Antivirus: NOD32, AVG
Pop-ups: Mozilla Firefox

If you are somewhat more advanced computer user, try Hitman Pro. This is very advanced stuff and can screw up your system. It's made for installing it once, running it (in safe mode) and dispose it again.

AVG Free is a good Anti Virus, and you can't beat the price.

AVG is decent and free. Never ever try anything that has to do with Norton, it's like having a trojan since it fucks up so much and never fucking gets it when you tell it to stfu.

I don't leave anti-virus on, it hogs resources. I'll run a scan w/ trend micro every once in a while though.

And yeah, firefox has eliminated almost 95% of pop ups for me.

If you ever get a virus and are having trouble getting rid of it look up Combofix... It'll get rid of anything as long as you know how to use it :)

For an anti-virus I'm going to have to just repeat everything that's been said... AVG FTW

First of all Firefox, after that if you really want a good anti virus spend some cash. Get Kaspersky. It currently has a higher rate of demonstrated protection than anything else (at least as of when I bought it, I suppose that could've changed if something new was released).

If you want an anti virus without spending cash, well as everyone here has mentioned I've heard AVG functions to an extent but the fact is if you're serious about it you should just spend some cash because free protection just doesn't compare. It's generally worth it I've found since it's less annoying in the long run.

my fav A/V program is Kapernski (sp? its german) labs. (The program is in english, but the name is german)

Its good, fast, and doesn't use a lot of memory.

IE is very bad to use nowadays. Almost every pop-up/virus gets through and there is nothing you can do about that using IE.

Mozilla Firefox filters about 95% of those pop-ups. In combination with No Script. It filters about 99%.

Get AVG Free/Kaspersky/NOD32 if you want to stay safe.
( you don't have to pay for it. Everything is downloadable )

Firefox (+ The mod 'No Script'. I don't use it myself but I've heard that it's amazing) and NOD32. I use Avast! (http://www.avast.com/) atm. It's free and it works alright.

Hmm that really is bad.

Try booting your PC in safe mode and perform a full disk scan. It should clear up alot.
If there are infected core files, I suggest making a backup of your to-keep files, and format the damn thing.

That's because it's an active X virus. LOL.

your hosed dude.

here is a trick, after you format reinstall. GO GET ACRONIS workstation.

make a backup of your workstation, with acronis and it creates a backend you can't touch. WHne you get another virus, reboot hit f11 and acronis will take care of the rest.

BAM, your virus days are over.

Format your hard drive, reinstall your OS, start from scratch. It takes a good chunk out of the day, but it's simple and effective.

I used AVG, good enough for me since I don't do anything too stupid with my computer.

It's Kaspersky, and how you think that is German boggles my mind.

Lol @ firefox.

Everyone I talk to screams at me to dump IE before I contract zillions of spyware/viruses...but the truth of the matter is that you really don't need firefox if you don't continuously drown yourself in mounds and mounds of porn.

I pretty much agree but I made the switch after IE started having rediculous pauses when I opened a new tab. I've re-formatted since then but I guess I got used to FF so I'm using it for the time being.

1) Go to http://www.moosoft.com/IClean/Download, download TheCleaner
2) Run The Cleaner.
3) Press the Home tab then the Check for Updates button.
4) After updates are installed, select Options. In the Scanning tab check box labelled Scan inside archive files. In the Heuristics tab, make sure Disable Heuristics box is unchecked and set to normal.
5) Close The Cleaner and reboot your computer into Safe Mode -- If you do not know how to boot into Safe Mode, instructions are at http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406
6) When your computer reboots, start The Cleaner AS STEP 3, select Home, then press the Scan System button.
7) see if that fixes your problem...
