It has been announced for a while, but who is going to play it? Do you think it will stack up? RTW > M2TW?

I am going to play it.
Played all TW games since Shogun.
I think this will be very good.

Edit: MTW > RTW > MTW2

Ugh... Total War games having being going downhill in recent releases. Both RTW and MTWII were a step below MTW. I don't see any reason for the trend to change, most people are still dumb and kids are still the biggest market so the game will continued to get worse.

I have to agree with numbers, tactics wise the games have been severely dumbed down, I get more done in medieval 2 just by spamming lots of tough infantry at the enemy than using actual tactics, height advantage means fuck all anymore, for some weird reason it hardly makes a difference when your archers are shooting down at tons of infantry at the bottom.

Shogun = Shogun Total War
MTW = Medieval Total WAr
RTW = Rome Total War
M2TW = Medieval 2 Total War

It looks like it should be awesome. I didn't liked MTW2 as much because it felt like a poor version of the RTW engine. This Empire one should be a brand new engine, and hopefully Calvalry won't act wonky in this one. But yeah, its been getting dumbed down a bit, chances are that won't change, but thats the way this stupid mainstreamed industry works.

So MTW1 came before RTW?

So MTW1 came before RTW?

it goes STW, MTW, RTW, MTW2, ETW

Vive la garde :)

I wonder if the thirteen colonies faction will be historically accurate. At this period in history, we weren't much more than a bunch of militiamen.

So MTW1 came before RTW?

Indeed, would be a bit silly to release back to back sequels like that in the RTS market.

Do yourself a favor and use that money to buy Europa Universalis 3 and its xpacs instead they have much much more depth than any Total War game

Thats the biggest problem with the TW series, since MTW mods have been dozens of times better than the original vanilla game. I still play a couple RTW mods every now and again, I woulda shelved RTW less than 6 months after getting it when it came out if it was not for those.

MTW2... OMFG. Thats all I can say, the epitome of graphics over all and total crap war. I don't even bother with the mods, the number of bugs and game breaking crap just was just awful. Serriously, shields actually working against your own troops? And gunpowder, gods, it is beyond overpowered, no realism at all and that is what built the series.

You should not use the same graphics engine as a game released years before, and come out with a more bug filled game (at least twice the numer)than the original. Unless they really pull out a better game that I could ever expect at this point, the total war series is a dead one to me. AoE at least understands what its game is about, even if it is already rather arcade like.

SEGA bought it man. That's how it goes. The mods are what keeps it alive, and since they allow it, I'll keep supporting them with my almighty dollar.

I noticed that vanilla was retardedly easy. Played VH/VH with HRE and absolutely raped face from turn 1

RTW is the last TW i'll ever play.. i'm just sick of the system... its the same old boring shit.

when am I gonna get a game in the total war vein but where theres no "rts" element, you make all decisions through the eyes of the general on the ground, like they did in the old days.

All TW games since MTW have been pretty damned easy. Quick guide:

M2TW: Play turks, make lots of horse archers, send them to the four corners of the world. Use smaller stacks so the enemy will sally with its shitty early era troops and get slaughtered. Exterminate every city, especially if you've got a general in a stack. The more dread you get the better, at max dread enemies will just rout when they see your general charging which makes taking towns simple. Actually, this tactic works with essentially every faction. Build a lot of best unit and swarm everyone around you before the retarded AI can start building shit.

RTW: Play Parthia and smash Egypt ASAP, make lots of horse archers with your huge income from Egypt's amazing provinces and switch capitol to Tarsus or Salamis, make cataphracts when you can. Alternately, play Rome and conquer Greece and make a fuckton of cash so you can produce an army every other turn in your core, or play Egypt and have enough money to build an army every few turns and have enough left over to bribe every enemy that gets anywhere near you.

Shogun was awesome. Never played M:TW. R:TW was awesome with Total Realism, and I mean fucking awesome. M:TW2 is a pile of steaming shit I sincerely regret buying.

Since Medieval 2 was relatively successful, I can't imagine E:TW being much of a change for the better in terms of realism or gameplay.

And I'm with Ferox's idea, which is one I've had many times. Only problem I see is that generals in the olden days generally set up their armies in the beginning and did little else in the way of anything besides giving vague directions to engaged units during the actual battle.

Its so damn easy its dissapointing.

Shogun, now that, that was a game.

It will probably be even more dumbed down, in respect to tactics, than the latest iteration. Although, it might have some decent accessories, like cup holders.

Lol. Not only have the latest games been dumbed down in both campaign and battle modes, but they threw QC out of the window judging from the bugs. Below are game breaking bugs at release that I remember, there are probably way more:

In Rome:

*Armies not attack or defending themselves sometimes. Just stand still and get killed by archers.
*Sieges, attackers sometimes just sit there.

MTWII:

*Two handed weapons (billmen, halbediers etc) = broken.
*Lance cavalry = broken.
*shields = broken.
*armor points give PENALTY instead of bonus.
*Pikemen behaviour and stance = broken.
*gunpowder units stance/formations = broken.

The games also keep getting shorter, which I suppose is an element of dumbing down. Adjusting for a lesser attention span as it were.

M2 Mutliplayer fails as well... spam gun powder, hope other idiot picked a weak powder faction.

Or did they finnaly fix the running/charging/fighting of the game to make it playable rather than a bunch of exploit the bug/game mechanics? Because I have never gotten the groups to actualy fight and act the way they did way back when, I have to fight like a damned movie producer/hacker.

powder spams are easy to counter :rolleyes:

I actually prefer good archers over anything else.

What is with all the M2tw negativism, i actually liked it a lot better than Rome or medieval or shogun. Most bugs were fixed in subsequent patches anyways...

Played MTW2. Gave it back almost brand new and bought RTW. Still love it. I remember one time I took out and entire army with nothing but a general's bodyguard. Kept charging, breaking off, running across the map, resting, and then charging them when they had followed me and tired out. Still makes me smile to think about it.
