First off, I'm very excited about Darkfall's First-Person combat aspect. I do, however, have a growing concern about how crisp that combat will be.

I've been an FPS player for a long time. I've traveled to, competed, and won several Unreal Tournament tournaments. Now, I know Darkfall is nothing like the Unreal / Quake - lol. However, the crispness and movement of a pro player looks and feels like an angel. I cannot say the same thing for EA's Battlefield infantry or Star Wars Galaxies' NGE.

Has there been anything said about the crispness of combat? I see that bow & users will have a crosshair. Will it require Quake-like aim or mere Battlefield / NGE randomness (clunky & unpredictable)? I just hope it feels FPS'ish, as I've played MMO's with a crosshair (AoC's ranger) - it's terrible :(

I'm assuming that they did the best they could to make first person as best as possible.

We won't know til beta, but the dev's have played the same shit we have, so they prolly had a rough idea of what players expect.

They do state that arrows will lose hight, collision detection so you actually have to hit your target etc. It all sound great, but yes. We have to wait for beta, or some very good vids to actually see where this will go.

With bows and magick projectile takes quite some time to travel to target, there really is no big difference wether the aim was 2 pixels off. So i think the cross hair will point quite exactly to what we´re aiming at...skill comes in when you predict the movements etc.

But Battlefield random aim? You smoking something or? It´s just realistic that you don´t hit the same exact pixel with every shot.

I kinda like how Neocron handled it. Really is a shame that game wasn't more popular...or just plain better.

Maybe I remember wrong, but in Neocron didn't you basically just use a cursor to select your target, like SWG NGE. Not a real shooter at all, also like TR.

arrows will probably be pretty fast and you will only have to aim at your target and not consider his movement unless he is really far away

as for spells i assume there will be fast and slow paced projectiles

for example in savage1 you had
- rocket launchers which were rather slow but with some aoe range when hitting
- coil rifles which were pretty much instant (like cs weapons)
- flux guns which created a constant stream of a certain length which drained ammo as long as it was activated and when connecting with a target it dealt damage constantly
- etc.

so i assume spells in darkfall will have different travel speed as well, anything comparable to AWPs, nailguns, shotguns, machine guns, etc.

No, because both arrows and spells fly at a much lower speed, so those fast reactions are not needed. But instead you need to learn to aim where people are going

I played TR for a bit, and while the aiming wasn't 100% FPS, it wasn't nearly as bad as you say. You could adjust the targeting reticule to be more or less 'sticky' - ie/ if you wanted to focus your aim on a quickly moving target, you could make it more sticky, causing your target to remain static for at least X seconds, as long as you didn't let go of the firing button. If you wanted to spray and pray, you could remove the stickiness and have FPS style shooting.

Anyway, /rerail, I support using a targeting reticule on bows, with leading targets and raising your trajectory to hit far off targets. Would be great with a squad of archers, or mage archers, letting loose a volley of exploding arrows. (<-- assumption, if a game has a tornado spell, it's -gotta- have enchanted arrows)

just use 3rd-Person ...

Before giving someone advice make sure they are correct or you will just look stupid. ;)

Did you play planetside? That's the valid comparison here. That game was relatively well done and very FPS-like, and was released in 03. That's 5 years ago, and they had terrible netcode. I am certain DF will be better than that game. Even if it isn't, PS offered so many hours of fun, I'll be happy.

For the video and data released the archer system will be similar withe Elder´s scroll IV: Oblivion; probably the projectiles will travel at a low or middle speed, the essencial is predict your oponentes movement.

Well, Battlefield infantry combat is terrible. Many times you will see the dmg reticules without actually doing any dmg. It's just so... bad. Call of Duty 2 has some superb crispness. Play that and then play BF :P You'll understand what I'm talking about.
