Heard of this before? It was posted here a few years back by Goty. It's rather fun, so I'll post it again.

UrW is a graphical rouge-like set in the forests of Finland during the Iron-age. Basically, you play as a dude who starts off in the middle of the wilderness (different scenarios start you off in different circumstances), and you have to find your own way to survive the environment, seasons, and prosper.

It's totally open ended, you can be a hunter, farmer, trader, pretty much anything. The game uses a skill system similar to UO, skills go up when you use them. The crafting system is great, you can gather resources and build anything from a simple knife to a cottage.

The game is pretty hardcore, it's perma-death. You can only save when you quit the game, and if you die, it's game-over. It's pretty fun that way because you have to live with your mistakes, eat a poison mushroom and try to survive the food poisoning rather than just reloading a saved game. (I failed, a bear found me and ate me when I was laying on the ground weak and vomiting)

There's a lot of Finnish mythology and lore, no direct magic, but there are woodland spirits who will affect the outcome of your luck depending if your actions please or anger them.

In my first game, I was a hunter, did pretty well, too. I made my own traps and javelins. I later found a group of traders in the forest stealing my traps, so I went predator on them. I ran around sneaking in the bushes picking them off one-by-one with my javelins. Then I skinned their corpses, made clothes out of their skin, and ate the remains. Life was good till I was exploring a cave, fell into a hole, couldn't get out, and starved to death before a bob-cat finished me. :(

Hah, this game ended early. I was sleeping in my shelter when I heard a noise. I woke up, and looked around to find myself assailed by five bandits. I killed one, crippled an other before taking a spear through the gut.

Oh no Spades...not again.

I let you lure me into EVE, well because EVE looks good.

This looks like an old BBS game.

You can build boats!

Well, rafts, at least.

I remember trying this before but I don't know if I liked it or not. Probably not since I hardly remember it.

Looks fucking awesome.

How do you make weapons?
do you use the wilderness to make them? EG a javelin from a sturdy stick? or something like that?

Yep. Cut down some shrubs, carve the slender trunks into stakes. Then harden them in a fire. They make excellent throwing weapons.

Heh, gotta love the live-action pictures :D

The game kinda reminds me of old Aleshar, World of Ice. It used to be shareware, but has been later released as freeware, for example from:
http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/391/Aleshar+-+World+of+Ice.html

I played Aleshar so much back in time, and listened to My Dying Bride - The Angel and the Dark River while playing, so that I still get flashbacks of the game whenever I listen to that album.

Darn, I gotta install these both now.

Got this game when the unlimited registration cost about 5 euros.. And now it's what, 30 euros? Lucky me.

The only Rogue-Like I got really into was Nethack, which was pretty fun. I never got very far into it, though, since I replaced my ancient PC with an equally crappy Macintosh a few weeks after getting into it. I'll definitely try this game, though. It certainly sounds like it's worth a whirl.

Ahh, good ol' abandonia. This and the underdogs were the only gaming sites i visited 5 years ago on my 366Mhz Pentium II with 32 mb ram and 1 mb video. But back then i rarely stumbled upon a game i wouldn't finish while all the new games i play now have an aproximate lifetime of 1-2 hours on my hard drive.

NO U.

I wasn't mocking anyone specifically, but now I am ^^

I was just pre-empting the typical halo 3 xbox gamer response.

Decent quality real-life pictures combined with pre-snes graphics makes for a profoundly unique visual style.
