Even tho i played console games in 90's im still rather diehard pc fan if its about games.

And some games you just need to play on pc.

Im always bit sceptical when games annouce also for console while its still in developement, and pc version is dumb down so it fit also on console.

Did you enjoy MSG4 on your PC?

alfaroverall
09-21-2008, 02:21 AM
Damn, tough question. Bigger question than the PC one, really. I'd have to go with FF8 off the top of my head, although having played it more recently I saw its flaws a bit more clearly (mainly that, other than Squall and Rinoa, the characters barely develop at all).

Sadly, FF7, Tales of Symphonia, and Skies of Arcadia all also come to mind. And this is just looking at RPGs since I have a personal preference for RPGs. SSBM and SSBB (not the original really, it had definite flaws that SSBM fixed big time) also come to mind as I make the initial step outside of RPGs.

Dreamcast.
Play it on Gamecube imo. The basic game is still very much the same, but they included a lot more extra content. It's been referred to as a "director's cut" version of the game.

I dunno, it's about the most fun I've had in a turn-based RPG combat-wise for some bizarre reason, and I liked the characters and story as well. The only problems for me were that they didn't update the graphics for the Gamecube version (so it looked abysmal alongside Super Mario Sunshine and other games; this wasn't a huge deal but it's there) and that the "optional characters" (Drachma etc.; the ones other than Vyse, Aika, and Fina) don't develop much compared to the main ones. (Even Vyse, Aika, and Fina's development isn't that great, put next to Squall's development in FF8 as an example.) That, and its dependence on the cliché "there are x number of ancient artifacts that you'll need to save the world, go get them" that is the norm in console RPGs.

Actually, FF3/6 is pretty much the 3rd place title among "mainstream freaking awesome JRPGs", with 1st being FF7 and 2nd being Chrono Trigger. The gap between 1st and 2nd is enormous in terms of popularity, but FF3/6 is not exactly esoteric.

I grew up with them, largely. FF8 was my first RPG, and FF7 was pretty much my second. I was then surrounded by plentiful amounts of other JRPGs that I enjoyed. It's pretty much stuck with me ever since. I wasn't around for the glory days of RPGs outside of Japan, such as the Ultima series; those were just before my time.

Maybe halfway if you do every side quest in the game, but if you go straight from that to the end of the game it's a LOT later than halfway through.

Xenogears had an amazing story and awesome characters, but it's just too long (it's probably upwards of the longest single player RPG ever developed I'd say) and the combat is too tedious imo. I haven't beaten it (I got halfway through or so and got pulled away from it, and now I can't remember what the hell I was supposed to be doing and am not willing to start over) but I got this impression out of what I saw.

Yeah, I'd agree that it's probably the longest single player RPG ever developed, and like most JRPGs combat kinda sucks (although it's not as bad as say FF). However it's easily the deepest RPG I've ever seen both story and character wise. How far in did you get? (I'll put down some spoilers for why it's so awesome, warning though if you read them they'll ruin most of the game)

One of the most important villains in the game is the protagonist, the main enemy is...everybody since humanity has been recreated as part of a massive biological weapon, it makes use of Freud's writings on psychology to explain what happened to the protagonist as a child and why he acts that way, it has a positively inspired use of religion to manipulate people...

I loved the game (and I've actually helped out at fan run forums for it before) but it just can't beat Xenogears or Suikoden 2 for me since both the story and the characters are much less interesting. That said the actual gameplay is worlds better than the two I mentioned (I loved the item creation system, the thievery, and all the bonuses).

Far far worse than FF in terms of combat, seriously, play it again in the early stages. It's freaking awful.

IMO Chrono Cross is better for a first playthrough while Chrono Trigger has more replay value. Yes, Chrono Cross offers multiple endings as well, but the game is longer overall and the variable endings are (by the very nature of the game) not quite as interesting. (I mean really, when all you can do is alter events in two parallel universes, it's not really possible to mix up how things end that much, compared to traveling through time). Chrono Trigger just seems more replay friendly.

But really, the two function as a unit, explaining things about one another in interesting ways.

Honestly? How so? I mean at least what you did in combat had some effect on what you could do in combat in the future. Admittedly it wasn't exactly what I'd call fun, but in FF combat basically doesn't matter for the most part.

Also, I replay Xenogears once every few years (although I haven't done so in the last couple years for some reason, I just haven't felt like it. I suppose I'm due for a replay.)

I'll agree that the two function as a unit (I loved the millenium bell scene in Chrono Cross) however I'd argue that Chrono Cross is better as far as replay goes as well, particularly due to the sheer number of characters in it. Of course I'm also probably affected by just a generally higher fondness for CC over CT, as one of the aspects which I found it to be really superior in was gameplay.

That's true, but then it was just like a grind...try out some different combinations, find a new tech, then spam the same combination over and over again as fights go on until you learn the next tech, rinse and repeat for all the new techs.

As for the comparison to FF combat, I was referring more to the actual mechanics than to the fighting itself. Watching long animations over and over again is just annoying, and that's pretty much what you get in Xenogears combat. At least most FF combat (neglecting GFs in FF8, some of the more advanced summons in FF7, and some spells scattered across all the games) is quick in terms of the animations.

For me it's just the opposite. There's a massive number of characters, but you never learn anything about almost any of them other than that really brief description when you first get them, so replaying the game to try a different combination of characters doesn't do you any good. (The only characters that I'd say do develop are Serge, Kid, Lynx, and Harle.) I've had the same problem in Suikoden IV, the only Suikoden I've played.

Regarding the actual gameplay, I thought the two were pretty even. The relative lack of double and triple techs (a major part of CT combat, and really what drove most of your character choices) in CC just put me off, but the combat as a whole (the Elements system, the 1-2-3 attack choices, etc.) was refreshing by comparison.

8-bit Nintendo: Duckhunt mutherfuckers, with the gun. And that's the only console and only console game I own or have ever owned so that was a short list.

Btw how much do you think I could get for an 8-bit nintendo in good shape alongside with two controllers, one gun and a cassete of Mario 1 and Duckhunt?
More than likely i saw a nes controller in mint condition for 99p in a shop where i used to live, i nearly bought one just for shits and giggles.

True enough as far as grinding goes, like I said it wasn't what I'd call fun, and I'll agree that FF was at the least over quicker for the most part than Xenogears. So I suppose from that point of view you're right.

Well, there are some which you get more than that about, Glenn and the like. That said it is one of the weaknesses of games with lots of characters that few of them get developed as much as they deserve.

I'd advise you not to base any opinion on Suikoden off that game, as overall it's the second worst Suikoden (the worst one is Tactics, which if you ever find a copy you shatter and flush the pieces down the toilet). Give Suikoden II, V, or the original a shot if you want a better idea (or even III I suppose).

I didn't really miss any of the CT combat since it always seemed to me to be rather generic, whereas by comparison combat in CC went out of its way to do something different and interesting. It's one of the few RPGs that actually has combat which was in some ways fun for me.

Also, I've got a thread up on JRPGs, you ought to make a few posts in there. Few people on these forums really seem interested in console RPGs.

Diehard PC gamer here, though I do own a gamecube with three games. Most of these I played on pc with emulators.

1. Conker's bad fur day
2. Ocarina of time (master quest to make it more interesting)
3. Super smash bros melee

yes I am a nintendo fanboy.. well, was. Not anymore since they just pump out the same game every year.

He thinks it is, that's what counts.

Wall of text which I won't read, inc from Slypie.

Lol, if you've read my past posts on a variety of topics, like movies and music, you would know I'm the first guy to hate on people thinking they are cool for liking "esoteric" stuff. Of course FF3 isn't esoteric, it's a fucking classic, and the most fun imo, probably in part due to nostalgia, but that still counts.

Megadrive/Genesis:

Streets of Rage 2 (must have finished it 1000 times), Cannon Fodder (oh yes!), Sensible Soccer (for it's customization fun, eg putting your school football team in), EA Hockey (the forerunner to NHLPA?)

N64:

Goldeneye, I mean, come on!
Starfox 64 (Lylat Wars) - on hardest difficulty

PC Still rules though...I have a Wii and barely touch it.

EDIT: Had to add this, my warped young brain thought this music was so awesome.

DOUBLE EDIT: I also forgot about the Desert Strike series on the Megadrive, though I only really played Jungle Strike.

Super Mario: Legend of the Seven Stars is the best game in existence.

GB- Pokemon Gold/Silver. The best that the game series ever got before repeating itself.

No way man Blue/Red are the ONLY Pokemon games worth playing. The rest are all the same copied shit.

As much as I'd like to agree with you, Gold/Silver actually made the best connection to Oldschool Blue/Red. [You see "Red" in Kanto Elite Four, remember?]

If you don't remember, this connection was actually ABSOLUTELY necessary because Ash saw Ho-Oh in the very first episode of Pokemon, so Gold/Silver/Crystal was as far as the series should've ever gone.

I actually agree with Suitepee. Gold/Silver (and then Crystal) were a significant improvement over Red/Blue. They added in some innovative elements (breeding is an example) to the same addictive gameplay, and put in new monsters to catch in sufficiently small numbers that you still could get pretty close to catching them all without cheating or becoming an absolute no lifer. They also all had fairly distinct "personalities" if you will, so you could still tell them apart. Whereas in the recent iterations, they're pretty much all the same, and there's so freaking many of them that you could never get them all.

Red/Blue, really, didn't take all that much to get all 150, frankly. A helluva lot, yes, but I'd say <100 hours. Probably <60 hours to get about 130.

QFT. (That was one of a select handful of episodes of the anime that I actually watched, heh.) That would've been an excellent way to end it, but no, they wanted to keep going...

Although, now that I think about it...wasn't that moltres? Edit: never mind, I just saw the "2nd time" video on youtube, and they do a close up on it, making it clear that it is ho-oh, but also do a far away view that looks the same as it does the first time.
