View Full Version : Politics: Sheriff Says 287g program and arresting illegal immigrants pays off!

By SHERIFF DARON HALL • September 14, 2008

When an opinion column ran Feb. 2, 2007, in The Tennessean with the headline, "Here is a tool to help the sheriff keep the community safer," it could not have been more right. There is no doubt that our city is safer since the Davidson County Sheriff's Office implemented the 287(g) program.

In the first 16 months of operation, 4,000 illegal immigrants (who committed crimes, were arrested and brought to jail) have been placed in removal proceedings. Of those, more than half had previous arrests.

During summer 2006, Nashville residents became frustrated after hearing of more than half a dozen homicides committed by illegal immigrants — many of whom had previous arrests on misdemeanor charges, but had been released from jail. Critics of the 287(g) program argue we should ignore the immigration status of arrestees until they commit a serious crime. I believe that is too late.

We regularly see evidence that screening all foreign-born arrestees pays off. Just last week, Juan Carlos Garcia was arrested for a misdemeanor crime. He was first arrested in Nashville for a misdemeanor and released before the implementation of 287(g). Between last week's arrest and his first arrest, Garcia was charged and convicted of felony sexual assault of a child in Houston, Texas. Upon returning to Nashville, he was required to register as a sex offender — which he did not do. This is just one example of a low-level offender that is removed from the streets of Nashville because we screen all foreign-born arrestees. Would you have wanted him released? Without 287(g), he would have been.

Killers now in prison

Five illegal immigrants who were charged with homicide in summer 2006 are now incarcerated in Tennessee state prisons. They are serving a total of three life sentences plus 92 years at taxpayers' expense. Two years later, one is still awaiting trial in a Davidson County jail. If we had removed these individuals from our community upon their first misdemeanor arrest, both lives and money would have been spared.

Another key to our success and a move that has made our program unique is the Immigration Advisory Council. In hopes of transparency, we became the first and only law enforcement agency in the United States to form such a council before program approval. I never expected members to agree and actually appreciate the challenges. However, just as the council's purpose statement indicates, I do expect members to "carry factual information to the immigrant community and community at large." The dialogue with this group, although sometimes contentious, will go forward, and I am confident the result will be improved policies and procedures.

As we move ahead, I believe the 287(g) program's success will continue. Since its implementation, the percentage of people arrested in Nashville who are here illegally has decreased by 36 percent, and we have yet to see another high-profile crime committed by a previously arrested and released criminal alien. For a safer Nashville, it is my hope these trends continue.

Daron Hall is sheriff of Davidson County. TN

Attempting to fix the symptoms instead of the problem is a good way to do jack shit of anything worthwhile.

This is partially true in terms of funding, but local law enforcement was the one actually telling you the lies, and willingly so.

illegal immigrants are in fact already breaking the law just by being here, arrest those pricks!

Don't particularly care about illegal immigrants, but then I have that civil disobedience thing pretty good. When the law is so out of whack there's no point in obeying. Everyone knows immigration is broken so it doesn't make much sense to enforce it without fixing the problem. What needs to happen is increased immigration combined with increased screening. If the illegals that are willing to work hard and become Americans (they can be Mexican-American for all I care as long as they're -American) are given legal status they can get better jobs and not have to live in fear of deportation and exploitation taking shit jobs from criminals far worse than them without committing felonies by faking papers. The once who shouldn't be here need to get deported yesterday. Sorting out which is which is going to be a long and messy process, but this 287(g) program sounds like a first step.

No you're not right idiot. There was no wall of text here, l2see,read,comprehend.

I don't really have a problem with illegals. However, if the program is working great. I think we need to start executing illegal immigrants arrested and convicted of murder.

I know a bunch of illegals though, cool family. They work their asses off, it really is insane. Hopefully they will be legal soon...if not, I will have to find more yard people :(

I like Lou, he's one of maybe three people on TV that are actually trying to stop illegal immigration. He's been trying to get Ramos and Compean (border patrol agents for those that don't know) out of prison ever since they were arrested.

Seriously, do you have nothing better to do than post anti-illegal articles like once a week?
I like reading his updates on the illegal immigrant activities. You can't find that shit on the news anymore, so it's hard to find out who's still trying to stop illegal immigration around the US.

LOL yah, Drug smuggler gets shot at and is given immunity to testify against border patrol agents doing their job. Then drug smuggler smuggles again prior to the trial and judge refuses to allow the drug smugglers violation of his immunity to be presented to the jury. I mean FFs even Feinstein asked for a pardon. The agents didn't exactly handle the situation well, but come on.

How is immigration broken? We let 1 million people a year into the US from other countries. Hell, 1991-2000 we allowed in 10-11 million people. You know what, you are right, it is broken, we are letting in WAY too many people. We have enough people here illegally who are fucking it up for everyone else, kind of like that kid in class who could not shut his fucking mouth and made the entire class miss recess, yeah, thats illegals for ya.

I work in Nashville.
There is a area known as ANtioch. Used to be a nice place, now the mall there is almost completely closed due to illegal invaders running away the americans, same with the houseing around that area and local businesses as well. You can hardly find a place that has a english sign. I moved here 10 years ago and that section of town was pretty nice, but it all ran down now.

The only problem with the 287G program is that it doesnt carry an immediate death sentence with it. Dont even get me started on killing the fuckers that invade my country. You want a reason to hate Bush...well this is the one, I'll be glad to help you hang his ass from the white house steps for refusing to take action against the largest armed invasionary force ever on american soil.

Wow, way to take the state of a desperate people seeking betterment in a foreign country at great risk to themselves and their families and turn it into an armed invasion of our native soil. That is impressive. You are still a douche, though.

10 million invaders. if only 1% were armed.....
1% of that is 100,000
.1% would be 10,000 armed invaders. (this means only 1 in a 1000)

At great risk to themselves? You mean the great risk of invading our country through desolate wastelands....to flee from the opressive mexican democracy? You mean from the 4th richest country in the world? The same country whose government faccilitates the invasion by handing out books on how to properly invade the US, and escorts said invaders into our country?

And dont worry, I've been called worse by better.:sly:

More illegal immigrants than legal for at least the last decade with zero enforcement. It's only been in the last six months were we've begun to see crack downs on illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants are also woven into the fabric of American society. Pew estimates that 14 million households are mixed legal-illegal, deporting American citizen's parents and spouses is not going to be popular.

Immigration is pretty clearly broken when you allow it to happen on such a vast scale for so long that it becomes a laughing stock. Depending on your views of close versus open borders the immigration policy might be okay in theory, but in practice it's undeniably not functioning as intended.

I think we should introduce Affirmative Action for people who can't get into the US as easily as Mexicans. We need to equalize our right to be invaded by criminals from all races.

Although I think that the anti-illegal immigration uproar is ridiculously overblown and that if we do start shipping all illegals back to where they came from, it might come back to bite us in the ass. . . I fail to see how anyone can have anything against what the article is describing.

If you come into this country illegally seeking a better life, I cannot blame you, but if you are going to then make life hell for other people by breaking more laws, you don't deserve anything.
