"Days of Glory" (2006), ("Indiginés" in French).

The film is about North Africans from French colonies who enlist in the French army to take back the motherland during WWII. I just watched it and I think it was pretty good. Very good acting by all of the main players.

I purchased it in the $5 bin at Wal-Mart (yes, I was shopping at walmart, plz 4give).

Before you rent it and get pissed:

1: it's in french/arabic with english subtitles.

2: it is politically motivated (which becomes evident in the end), but not in a way many people are likely disagree with, unless they are most ignorant kind of evangelical zealots (so if that is you, I withdraw my recommendation that you watch it).

I have been careful in this initial post not to spoil the plot and give only the very general outline. I will abandon this caution for all other posts in this thread, and I am hoping that some of our euro (especially French) posters have seen it and can comment/provide insight, etc.

I'm not sure what you mean by that, but if you are asking for more information on the film, here you go: **spoilers**

Throughout the war, the NorthAfricans in the French army are treated like 2nd Class citizens. Example: They charge in first to draw fire so that the spotters can call artillery down on the german gun emplacements. Then the French North-African troops move in (the whities). They never get to go on leave, they receive sub-standard food, they're wearing sandals in the snow, their personal mail is treated as entertainment and not sent, they are passed over for promotion, etc.

The main actors are given an important mission to go support the americans as they hold this one town from the constant German attacks.

Only 4 1/2 guys of the unit make it to the town, the americans are already all dead or gone. They defend the town for a while and all of the guys end up dying except for one.

When reinforcements (more North Africans) arrive, the lone survivor is not rewarded at all, is not allowed to speak with the French Colonel who sent him on the mission, and just has to join up with another unit.

At the end the survivor has a kind of saving private ryan visit to the cemetery and sad music plays, etc. He takes the bus back to a crappy CRAPPY apartment where he obviously lives and /sadface. Then words come on the screen saying that the french government stopped paying the pensions of soldiers from their extended empire, said they would rectify the situation in 2002, and still has not done so (filmed in 06).
