I have nothing against the French. I love their food, wine, and women. The cuisine is amazingly diverse, given that influences from neighboring countries leeched into the bordering French regions. Their vineyards are likewise settled on superior soil/climate, so they end up producing a respectable quantity of exquisitely complex wines. The women are also some of the most utterly charming ladies that I've had the pleasure of meeting. One name come to mind Jean Rousseau. This man is one of my favorites in all of history! And he was french! Almost single handedly started the french revolution. But when it come to american-french relations you must remember the usa was founded by revolutionaries meaning in order to hold power here you must keep that awe inspiring persuasions under control. Even if the French aided us, to a great extent I might add, it was hardly out of some moral altruism, but rather they were pissed at Britain and simply wanted to gain favors with the new country that would arise. Also, since we had the guts to revolt (regardless of reasons) against our former empire, many countries INCLUDING YOURS followed our example, (Though if I remember correctly, yours wasn't quite as idealized, no...)

Remember, the French had a larger empire than you, they had a better general and leader than you in the form of NAPOLEON! NOT NAPOLEAN, they almost nearly destroyed the Russians on their own soil - something you Americans can only ever dream about.

For starters, being cannon fodder hardly makes you braver, maybe stupider and more expendable to your superiors, but hardly more courageous. While Napoleon was a tactical genius for the most part, fairing better than most of our war generals, the fact that Saratoga was the defining victory of the war, (Considering that the French wouldn't ever bother with helping us until then.) is proof that we were far from hopeless. On the issue of guerrilla warfare, while not the main strategy at times, the fact that hiding and utilizing cover and tactics against a larger force was rather revolutionary, even dishonorable, at the time. While it wasn't utilized to such a point that it could be considered a defining strategy, it was key along with other military events around the world in the formation of current military strategy.

About the empire, even at its height, it only covered about 1/3 of Europe, which considering its length from 1804-1815, isn't that long. While America has been left alone to deal with itself, maintaining a 3+ million sq. mi. landmass for about a century (not counting Alaska or Hawaii which were taken/purchased in 1867 and 1893 respectively.) Is no easy task.

Plus almost, kinda, sorta isn't winning.

Finally, you Americans should remember this one last thing if all else fails -

America has created some brilliant technologies to help the troops on the frontline. However, the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, and the "Long War" [in Iraq], have been completely tactical and logistical blunders. Limited body armor for the troops, invading nations that pose no threat to America or the rest of the world, and an inability to counter guerilla tactics have led to countless unneccesary deaths, and a ridiculous national debt.

France and England have their own set of successes. The French have conquered most of Europe at multiple points in time, as well as numerous colonies bringing in wealth, while the English have successfully held a massive empire that always had the sun shining on it somewhere. Both have had brilliant generals such as Napoleon and Oliver Cromwell. However, they've both been involved in some absolutely pointless conflicts, usually against eachother. The Hundred Years' War, the most obvious instance, would routinely empty the kings' vaults of all funds, leading to more taxes and tension with the Church. What did this massive war ultimately accomplish? The English lost Bordeaux and gained Calais, and started waging war amongst themselves. The French just kept Normandy from the English.

Oh, and they both were economically crippled, and developed the ridiculous sense of nationalism that we see rampant in the world today.

About the empire, even at its height, it only covered about 1/3 of Europe, which considering its length from 1804-1815, isn't that long. While America has been left alone to deal with itself, maintaining a 3+ million sq. mi. landmass for about a century (not counting Alaska or Hawaii which were taken/purchased in 1867 and 1893 respectively.) Is no easy task.
