View Full Version : WAR: The Good, The Bad, and all that...

So I checked out WAR over the weekend. I got my key on Friday and played it a little Friday night, and most of Saturday. Then the beta was closed Sunday, (Doh!)...
Before I begin I'd just like to state what WAR is NOT. It is not Darkfall, it is not a Sandbox, it is not skill based, it is not open pvp, and its not what most of us are here waiting for.
That being said it is a pretty fun little game.
You pick a side, a race and a class. They could definitely use a few more classes if they are going to be a level and class based game. But I found a couple that were fun.
You start off like most MMO's, You get a little briefing on whats going on and are sent on your way. Near your spawn you find a few quest givers, merchants, and trainers.
At level 2 you get your quest to go checkout the WAR version of a battleground. I played a High Elf, and a Dark Elf so both were the same.
You don't have to find anyone to go join the queue, just click a symbol by your map. You can join alone, or as a group. When its ready it asks you if you are, and ports you in if you are or gives you a minute if you need one.
The battleground is composed of two start areas, two flag areas, a cave system and paths around the cave to the opposite flag. Neither flag is "owned" by anyone, they must be captured. The match is timed at 15 mins, or the first to 500 points. Points are give for flag captures, and kills so far as I could tell. When one side gets both flags and holds it for 10 seconds giant balls of flame erupt from the flag points killing anyone within a fairly large distance. You are luckily give a warning horn sound that tells you to RUN like fuck. After the blast everyone rushes back in to fight some more. I'm not positive but it seems like the flags reset after that, though I might be mistaken.
The PVP is pretty fun as long as your not over matched. On a normal server it raises everyone under lvl 8, to lvl 8 so its fairly competitive. (They don't get the skills that go with it though, so they aren't exactly equal either) I'm guessing that's just for the first one, though I don't know for sure.
Anyway, you go off and do your thing in the world and at your leisure queue up for the RvR battles. I never had to wait long, and when its done it ports you right back where you were at. Which is nice for this type of game. Again this isn't a Sandbox so as long as you don't look at it like it should be it works.
I believe that had I gotten a little further I would have been in areas where both factions played together and there would have been some pvp in those areas. I'm not certain about flagging, or how that works, if it does at all on regular servers, but they'll have Open RvR servers where there should be lots of action here. And you'd be porting back and forth between world pvp, and battle ground PvP.
Whats more is you get Experiance for PvP, (already known, but you gotta include it in a review heh)
As you play you earn both XP, and Renown. Renown opens up items you can buy at the merchants.
-----------
Now, I'm not a big fan of PvE, but I'll talk a little about that also. I'm actually pleasantly surprised by the limited PvE I played. Keep in mind I only got to lvl 7 or maybe 8 before the beta was over. But...
They had the typical quests like all mmo's do. I did some, wasn't impressed, but nothing drove me insane either. They had a couple open world dungeons which I found (not instanced). One was a cave that I went through killing shit and looking for something or other... The other was another cave but full of lvl 40 badasses which promptly kicked my ass.
Again, so far same old same old. Hopefully at higher levels the lame crap that drives me insane in other games isn't a problem, but I can't really say for sure LOL.
What I did find interesting, and fun as far as PvE can be fun was something they called Public Quests. When you walked into a public quest area it told you what was happening. I found a few, usually you had to kill 30 - 70 mobs of one type or another, then round two would have you kill some harder once in lesser numbers who brought some of the lesser mobs w/ them. Then a boss mob at the end. (Dragon or whatever). You don't need to be in a group, or even talk to the idiots around you. Just go in and kill kill kill as fast as you can doing as much damage as you can. At the end everyone who participated gets a bonus number based on what they did, etc... After that it rolls for prizes, and adds the bonus to your roll. The winners get something out of the chest that appears. (A little silly but not bad, better then instances and traditional dungeon raids.)
You get pretty decent Xp doing this, you also earn influence which gives you access to special rewards in town. (Potions, weapons, armor) While you are doing this I usually queued up for RvR.
----------------
So to recap...
The Good:
LOTS of PvP, Right from the start. You get in the action quick, and its pretty fun.
The PvE isn't as bad as it is in other games imo. (Though keep in mind i only got to lvl 7 or 8.)
The Bad:
Class Selection is pretty lame.
There wasn't much you could buy in the beta, or craft for that matter. We'll have to see how it goes in retail.
All in all, this game isn't Darkfall, never was supposed to be, and won't fill its void while we wait for it. But if you just want a game you can login and be PvP withing a minute or two, and isn't another job to play this might be for you.
I'm not the best reviewer around but I liked it for what it was. Don't expect to much and you might enjoy it.
I look forward to playing it a bit while I wait for DF, I have hopes the higher BG's are cooler and that some aspects of the game I surely didn't experience might be fun as well.
Once DF comes it'll be dropped like a rock, but in the two days, and seven or eight levels I played I didn't run into any glaring problems that made me want to avoid it like the plague either.

Thanks for your input. I was curious as to what the game would be like, and now i have more of a picture.
I myself, wont be buying warhammer. In all honesty, it just looks like another Re-skinned World Of Warcraft and i really am getting bored of games like that.
Darkfall is new and refreashing so i will patiently wait for it to realease, and while i do so, i'll be playing Counter-Strike and Half-life 2
Thanks and Regards.

thanks for that, it tipped me in the direction of reactivating my WoW account and doing BGs instead for my time of waiting.

WAR
The good: girlfriends are overrated.
The bad: H00RAY 4 T3H GRINDD!!!
I don't get posts like this. There isn't a grind in WAR as I, and many others define one.
Grinding is what you have to do when you have to kill 25000 plague bats to get things to turn in for rep.
WAR never necessitates this because you can spend all your time and energy getting items and other loot and leveling while playing PvP the entire time. PvPing all the time is not what I consider to be a grind. That's the fun part. remember?
Edit: oh and in response to Jangang's post I'd have to say that his gripe that there aren't enough classes is really out there considering there are twenty different classes in the game. That's more than double the class selection in WoW.

that's about what I felt it was like jangang. The open field pvp starts at like level 8 and was pretty sweet as well.
If anyone is looking to roll with someone we have a forumfall guild going on black crag or whatever.

Much better then WoW, sorry if I wasn't clear about that. Similar style, in so far as how you move, interact w/ npcs, etc... But how the game goes its MUCH better.
BG's in WoW are more burdensome then they are worth. (At least they were 2 or 3 years ago when i played last.)
Beyond that they were kind of stupid in what you had to do and all that. This was simply, and to the point, setup to maximize conflict. Its a lot of fun.

yeah, you're right. battle tactics are totally pointless in games that involve capture points and varying terrain. deciding where to go and when, who to target, what to use, when to retreat.... etc no skill at all.
and i'm just talking about rankings 1-11

Everything is pointless when level, gear, and linear, set-in-stone skill trees take precedent over what's really important.

if you're in a pvp area it levels you up to two levels below what the max pvp level for the area is.
the skill trees are just one component of class setup, you also have tactics that can be switched on the fly when outside of combat, and battle rank points(i forget if this is the name but essentially there are 40 ranks your character can get and 80 battle ranks.) these battle ranks give you points to spend in another stat buff screen that depending on your point spread gives you resistances/buffs/new tactics.
gear is not nearly as important or influential as it is in WoW. although it does have some impact, but generally the easier sets to get are not that different from the best you can attain at a given ranking/level. when i say the sets are easy to get i mean you get influence points for a given area just by playing the game. it's all very simple and generally your getting points to buy sets from vendors just by playing wherever

I'd definitely be interested in the forumfall guild, but atm, I don't own War, I've played in the beta, and have gotten several characters pretty high. My favorite one is probably the Black Orc heh. Oh, and public quests really improve in the tier 2+ zones, and when you own keep's, I believe it was said that you can construct defenses ala walls.
Thanks i'm pretty sure i'm going to give WAR a try now.

I played some open beta till rank 5ish. It's quite fun even though it feels like WoW.
If you guys make a European guild i guess i could tag along since there are so few games nowadays that are worth playing.

Thats was my reasoning back in 05.
When Darkfall is out i'll play it anyway so... It's good to have something else to waste time on 'till that day.

QFT!
I know that as soon as I buy another MMO, be it this, or something else that comes my way, DF will immediately release. That said, if I'm wrong I have a game to play in the mean time, and if I'm right well it was $50 well spent! If that's what it takes to secure a DF release so be it haha. ;)

it requires ultra skillz to use your 3-6 abilities at ranks 1-11.
And you need a hardcore pvp/lan/ventrilo team to beat some PUGS.
There is no skill in mmos.Only some teamplay.

sounds like a slightly better (more pvp-centered) WoW.
i fucking hated WoW though, so slightly better doesnt cut it.
i wish theyd make a game like how WoW was at release, where horde and alliance hated each other and were always raiding each other and ruining each others shit.
i miss the days when the basement of the Redridge Inn was the "Horde Shelter" where all the noobs hid when the town was geetting fucked up by lvl 60 Horde.
if it had stayed like that, the fact that it was my (at the time) favorite fantasy setting would have been enough to keep me playing.

People should do their research before they open their mouths.. it's also open rvr, your faction can own keeps, you can do scenarios which are like bg's, but you don't have to. It's just another option if you want instant RVR the moment you pop in the game and make your char., easy way to get xp too.

Yeah its just a PVP grind in BGs. That doesnt sound much fun either.
In WoW there were what? 3 Battlegrounds when i was playing. Sometimes they got to be old. But I always liked playing WSG. There's way more scenarios than that and tons of outdoor RvR areas. There are tons of options of different types of games in WAR. It's not a grind unless you make it one. I'd rather be playing against other real players, playing a different game each time I play than go somewhere and grind on mobs for three weeks to get some rep gear.

I will give this ago on the 18th, i have nothing better worth playing tbh and if i meet up with a few of you in game all the better, even if we are just standing around saying "omg i fucking hate this game".
Just 1 question, if someone if a good few lvls above you are they forced not to play with you anymore by annoying game mechanics?

It definitely depends on how many levels you're talking about, what you're doing (scenario or something else) and what server type you're playing on.
I heard something about higher level players going two tiers down, almost to the starter areas again that is, and starts pvp'ing, gets turned into a chicken. I think you can travel around in the Core set server tiers/chapters, as long as you don't pvp there, as you'd surely just kill everyone with one hit each. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on this.
I had fun in beta - I've still not decided whether or not I should buy this come the 18th. I liked it the few days I tried it, but enough? Not sure.

Well, yes and no.
Atleast in the first scenarios the lvl cap is 11, everyone below lvl 8 gets stats and dmg like you were lvl 8.
So basically you can play Scenarios all the time and still have a good chance of killing people, but i don't think you can as a lvl 4 play with a friend at lvl 15, wich kinda sucks.

Yeah, where's the 'mentorship/apprentice' function? AoC had one of those. Allowing lower level players to be boosted in stats when teaming with a higher level player at some xp cost(less xp per kill).
Instead of the chicken solution, there are people suggesting that the higher levels should be debuffed to a competitive level if they ventured into the noob lands. A solution I think could work for WAR.
The whole game is designed differently from what they're aiming for with DF, but still, the more 'freedom' of choice people have to venture around and team/fight with whoever, the better.

Jumpgate: Evolution will have PvE servers, meaning that PvP is not a core mechanic of the game most likely. :(

Any Darkfall players wishing to join us, Forumfall will have a guild on Dark Crag starting tomorrow. Pm me for invites on here until we get established.
So far we have about 10 image members and 10 forumfallers. Should be fun though we could use more so we can really wreak some havoc.

Good thing you didn't post this in one of the already existing war threads. I like to read through multiple threads to get peoples' opinins on a game that I'll never play.

Ill throw in my 2 cents on the game as well, i played it all week and got two characters into the tier 2 zones (lvl 11-12 +). Besides what jang mentions i really have to emphasize how important pvp is in the game. Controlling a zone means things like increased exp gain, better vendor prices, and increased reknown gain. Capturing objectives about the map is very competitive, and pvp in the game is largely based around group roles. Tanks literally hold lines, healers keep the tanks alive. Dps goes after healers. Organization is key, as an archmage with a swordmaster keeping his guard buff on me we where nigh unstoppable. I dont necessarily see alot of room for pve advancement as the threat system is rickety at best, but it will be interesting to see how the game progresses.
I also see crafting having a much larger impact come release as people will actually have a reason to progress in them.

I played the beta and will be playing WAR till DF comes out.
The main reason is this is the FIRST mmo EVER to have oceanic (australian) based servers on release, meaning i get a ping of under 60 or so, compared to my usual EU or US based server ping of 300+ (on a good day).
Any game which openly acknowledges that Aussie gamers have just as much right to fast lag-free free gaming as other countries gets my vote.
The classes are fun, with each class having 3 'trees' with 25 spec points, and extra rvr abilities as you gain rankings.
The focus from what I've seen of the skills so far and this character builder (http://www.wardb.com/career.aspx?id=5) seems to be on group rather than solo play. You see a ton of area of affect spells, debuffs/damage/heals/dot's etc, while still having specific class trees for pure single target damage.
It runs fine with no bugs, and I think it should only get better as they continue to build on it - but it is currently 'finished' up to the end game, there are no major flaws like recent debacles (aoc + vangaurd), and it is easy to get involved from the get-go.
I'm usually the last person to praise a released game, but you could do far worse than getting yourself a copy of WAR till DF comes out. (or beta starts)
That was a really well written review. It fits quite well with what some friends of mine have reported back (also from beta). I think you are right to stress that the game has to be taken on its own merits and played for what it is. Personally, I rather like that it makes no claims to be anything but what it is.
If term wasn't about to start I might go buy it lol.

I would like to add that 12+ alot of the Order classes start to mature. RVR becomes a tad more challenging along with the BGs. Chaos more so from 18-20ish. The game does get much better at those ranges for both realms imo and is worth checking it out at least that long.
