Because I'm so sick of these boring religious, political and troll threads that have been swarming OT lately thought I'd make something fun, post who you think is the best evil villain in a movie/t.v show/game, whatever and have a link that shows them at their best.

My personal favourite is Jon Irenicus from Baldurs Gate 2:

Coolest bad guy ever was Reno of The Turks from FF7.

And of course we can't forget the Joker.

I second Irenicus... one of my favourites.

GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System) of Portal was pretty cool. One of the better 'villains' from recent games.

However, my favorite villain is Nurse Ratched

The Joker from Dark Knight was one of the most brilliant displays of a villain in cinematic history. I am not trolling right now and I am 100% serious. Put that in your pipe and smoke it :)

As for the most disturbing villain I've ever experienced in entertainment was probably the scientist who tortures the main character in 1984. The conversation they have is probably one of the most horrifying events depicted in any work of art.

Angela Lansbury's, as Mrs. Iselin, recounting of her plot to Raymond Shaw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RAUm6l_t6k) in The Manchurian (there is more to that scene, but I haven't found a full clip) candidate is subtly chilling, especially considering that until then, I had associated her with Murder She Wrote and similarly innocuous characters. I also adore the garden club scenes, which are wonderfully disconcerting.

I don't have a link showing it but my personal favorite is Joei from Suikoden 2.

Specifically when Joei poisons himself before he's supposed to make an oath to the king because he knows the king is going to drink a glass of wine with his blood in it as part of the oath.

Another great one is Id from Xenogears, no specific moments for it but he was just an excellent villain in general.

While we are all making presumptious asses out of ourselves, my assertion is that the reason you don't like Dark Knight or the performance by Heath Ledger is because you decide to hate on things simply because you consider them mainstream. You liked Green Day until they went mainstream. You loved that Jimmy Eat World song until they went mainstream. But now you hate them. When you grew up as a child you drew pictures with these (http://www.myconfinedspace.com/watermark.php?src=wp-content/uploads/2006/11/emo-crayola.jpg) crayons.

You honestly believe the most respected film critics throughout the world would stake their entire careers on a fad surrounding some second rate actor because the recognition is posthumous. While all of the people around you talk about the cool new Batman movie (Not even noticing your new "Daemon Black" nail polish btw), you tell them it "wasn't that good" because you like to be different. You aren't like them after all. You aren't a sheep. Not like them. Not like them.

Before referring to myself or anyone else as a "sycophant" (which by the way is really just a retardedly over the top way of saying "fanboi"), I'd come equipped with slightly more knowledge of the situation other than a few generalizations you pulled out of your ass :).

I enjoyed the performance immensely and would love to back it up if you care to explore the reasons before labeling everyone with some bullshit term because they disagree with you.

When ya look at a movie like dark knight ya gota remember this was alrdy done by a super famous actor named Jack Nicholson. IMO no is going to play the joker better and hence i think that movie sucked a raunched cock! Main stream influence aside that actor died right after production making it a must see not by quality but for a gross macabre fantasy with death and eternal fame some mainstream folk have. Which is imbecilic IYAM!

Johan from Monster. No concurence at all.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCGLKEUnaPo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wne6jHlr9QE

Johan Liebert Voiced by: Nozomu Sasaki
Johan Liebert is the namesake "monster" of the story and the mystery of his past is the focus of the plot. He has been called a monster, the next Adolf Hitler and even the devil himself. Johan Liebert was shot in the head at a young age but saved from death by Dr. Tenma. Because of this, he regards Dr. Tenma almost as though he was his father. He has spent portions of his life in different places under different aliases and possesses an extraordinary level of charisma and intelligence. He uses his gifts to cruelly manipulate and corrupt others, often with no apparent end other than to cause suffering and destruction. His goal, as he stated when he was young, is to be the last one standing at the end of the world. One of the themes of Monster is how individuals are capable of transforming into monsters; Johan often acts as both a direct and indirect catalyst for this transformation.
Like his co-star Tenma, Johan also has many similarities to a character from a classic manga by Osamu Tezuka, in his case Yuuki Michio, the main villain from MW. These include his childhood involvement in a secret military experiment, ability to skillfully manipulate powerful people, ambitions to cause the end of the world, occasional suicidal tendencies and his infrequent bouts of cross-dressing.

Dark Helmet from Spaceballs:

'So, Lone Star, now you see that evil will always triumph because good is dumb.'

Seriously though, I vote for the entire town of Innsmouth from Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. Most specifically, the section where you have to escape from the inn while two guys with shotguns are blowing out doors and windows behind you. The recent climax to series 4 of DrWho, was probably the most magnificently insane Davros I have ever seen.

Davros terrified me when I was a kiddy, as an adult I just love how over the top and melodramatic he is.

Haha, Ok i suppose i'll continue with the wild assertion theme, and propose that you like to jump on any old bandwagon, and will vacantly follow popular opinion, in order to avoid the tricky business of formulating your own opinions. You will latch on to mainstream insults or 'buzzwords' regardless of how inappropriate the term 'Emo' might be, given the current disagreement, you will use it anyway, because hey, generic one size fits all statements are again, easier than formulating an opinion.

But in all seriousness, Do you really think that 'respected' film critics, get to be so by ruffling the feathers of sycophants, which by the way, you ought to learn the meaning of before getting any further into an argument about whether you or anyone else is one or not.

And this has nothing to do with Heath Ledger's performance. Jack Nicholson, who is a better actor by a great deal in my opinion, couldn't put in a decent performance either. The reason being that the character is a poorly written, one dimensional, comic book villain. Set that character against a backdrop of stupidity and an inane storyline, and nobody, regardless of acting talent could do anything more or less than an adequate job.

Film critics would be risking their reputations (as if they meant anything) far more by giving anything less than a glowing reveiw of a recently deceased media darling, cut down in his prime.

But in all seriousness. Our pathetic little exchange aside, if you enjoyed it then fair enough. If you happen to like Batman movies (I concede that i don't) then chances are, you would have enjoyed his performance. But i daresay there would be no 'meal' made of it, were Ledger still alive, by any film critics, and subsequently by any fans.

I know very well what a sycophant is, and I explained the context of the word accurately. dunno where you are coming from on that one. See the problem with you seems to be that you can't see a good performance in a film you don't like. We call this bias my friend, and I would have guessed it'd be the reason why you couldn't see a good performance when it hit you in the nose. Jack Nicholson's job was legendary, and so was ledgers. I disagree that the posthumous nature of his situation has anything to do with his recognition for the role, and the issue has been discussed at length in film circles.

Personally i didnt think the dark knight was all that great. Heath Ledger's performance was certainly very good...but im sorry Im just not seeing the "legendary" aspect youre referring to.

Basically my point is that you seem to be eagerly jumping to the conclusion that (whoever it is youre arguing with) is making a decision not to not like the performance, simply because of the hype.

Ok being a 'Sycophant' is not the same as being a 'fanboi'

A fanboi is somebody who is such a fan of something that they will defend it tenaciously and are oblivious to any faults.

A sycophant is somebody who falsely praises something in order to forward their own standing. They're totally different

And again, I say that the film critics are indeed sycophants. Jack Nicholson could have played the role using a 'Dick Van Dyke' cockney accent and would still get showered with praise, all based on previous performances. Ok he's not dead, but he is considered part of the 'old school' thus instantly worthy of a good review no matter what he does. This is well understood by film critics everywhere. Just one of those unwritten rules. There are certain actors and actresses who will get good reviews no matter what they do.

And as for my biases. Well yes we all have them, even you. But trying to be as objective as possible, i will even concede that Ledger's Joker was better than Nicholson's, and believe me, i hold Nicholson in much higher regard. But let's not forget that the Joker is akin to a pantomime villain. It's would be impossible for anyone to potray him as anything else.
