View Full Version : Is my knee fucked?

So I was sparring yesterday when I got a solid kick to the side of my knee while I was posting for a kick.

I felt the knee pop out, bend over as I fell, and then pop back in once I hit the ground.

At the time, it didn't feel bad other then when it actually popped out. However, it is now extremely sore and getting a bit swollen.

Anyone have something similar happen? Think I need to see a doctor, or will it be ok?

Ice it, and keep it under pressure. If the swelling doesn't go down in a few days, see a doctor. You might have split or cracked something down there.

If your walking fine it could be that it just got dislocated then popped in again, it can happen at any time due to an awkwardly angled knock, may want to get it checked out just in case though.

Friend of mine had the same thing.
I'd suggest to go see a doctor man, one thats specialized in sports injuries.
My friend went to the hospital the same day it happened and the docter there told him to just rest and watch what happens after a week. The next day I drove him to this sport injury doctor specialist miss (sp? word?) and she figured he got his muscleband? ripped. Not that super bad. You're just fucked if it is your meniscus, if thats the case then you'll most likely have to get under the knife. Better go check it out man.

I have had that happen before as well, but I was playing football when it happened. As for any joint injury, but especially the knee go to a doctor right away. I ended up tearing some cartilige and if I hadn't of taken care of it at that second I would have needed a knee cartilage replacement.

Why would you NOT see a doctor...?

Worse case-scenario is that you spend money and find out there's nothing wrong with it...

But at list you get assured that nothing is wrong...

Hey I had a similiar injury. If it is getting swollen you need to go to the doctor, that means fluid is building under the kneecap. If you don't get it drained then your knee will lose flexibility and be very uncomfortable. Go to the doc and get it checked out ASAP.

physio...not doctor. doctors are fuckin useless when it comes to muscular damage, unless your getting a referal.

where on you knee was the contact? the outside in?

if it did pop out there is a chance your damaged/strained your MCL, or worse a knee popping out is not typically a good thing. you may have potentially strained your PCL or ACL defending upon the direction of impact upon the knee. you will be some swelling but not a huge amount.

with an MCL tear you will still be able to somwhat walk and you might feel not to bad just unstable but dont push it, go and see someone.
Because when u move in the wrong way, and you will its going to hurt a fk load more and your going to further damage your kneee and your PCL/ACL as theres reduced support.

thats if it really did pop. but you may have gotten lucky but if theres swelling there may be something wrong. is the swelling at the other side of the knee? around the kneecap itself or at the site of impact? it may just be from bruising/microtrauma but regardless get it checked out.

in other words if you have the money = physio now.
if not = doctor to get a referal.

If your kneecap popped out (and in again) you should see a doctor anyway. And you shouldn't ice it as far as i know. Blunt injuries like bruises and and similar should be iced just the 10 minutes after it happened. After that you should leave it a while and than start warming it (not by moving, but by applying a heat source) to innervate blood circulation and fastening the healing process. And probably most important: Rest! Do not stress any injured joint / muscle whatever.

That's for fun, not when you have to take them regularly. (That said I do have some good memories of times I was injured. However I've learned to be careful about that because if you stay in that state long enough it'll make you ill usually.)

Ummm yes, a guy from my work has something happen to him like this but it was with this foot. he didn't have any pain but after a few days past he wasn't able to walk on it. didn't think he needed to visit the doctor untill his girlfriend made him go. He soon foundout his foot was crack and need to have a cast. the doctor also said he didn't even know how he got this far without going to the doctor due to the reasons of it being broke and the LARGE fking bump on the side of his foot.

So my advice to you... VIST THE FKING DOCTOR DAMMIT!!!! haha

p.s. I'm a doctor I want your money

I did all of this on the Sabbath, and then claimed that my neighbor did it in court.

Hmm, I gues I'll go to the doctor.

I wasn't taking it terribly seriously because after icing it for a few minutes, I was able to go one more round and felt pretty well. Last night I went out and felt pretty good as well.

However, this morning it was extremely stiff, and hurts a decent amount when walking. It also gets extremely wobbly if I straighten my leg completely. But I rested and iced it for awhile and it started feeling better again.

Ultimately I figure I will just try to see the muscle/joint doctor tomorrow, but I'm not too worried at this point.

Knee injuries are most definitely nothing to mess around with. That injury sounds serious, go to the doctor. The pain will linger around for months, maybe even become permanent, or resurface later on in life if your don't get it seen by a professional.

After reading what you wrote here, I wouldnt be to worried. My guess is everything will turn out fine, but do any exercises they give you, to tighten things back up.

This is pretty much what happened with my first knee injury. It seemed to be ok after a while and then around 3-4 days later I put some pressure on it and it suddenly shattered and turn the kneecap around my knee. Seriously, see an orthopedist as soon as you can and don't put any pressure on it till then.

its going to heal by itself since it popped back into the joint, but if you go to a doctor he might give you drugs if you tell him youre in pain.

if he has ligament/tendom damage it doesnt just heal itself.

the tissue is non-regenerative meaning it will require surgery if its a bad tear.
if your getting alot of swelling it could just be a large hemotoma caused by the impact. thing is this can result in microtrauma in the tendon which in itself is ok, but if you continue to strain this joint that trauma can turn into a tear which is usually an opperable injury.

Sounds like tendinitis. Though the tendons are large in the knee and the thought of moving them is painful unless you keep it active its going to lock up permanent! At least thats what happened to my thumb and doc said make sure to keep it moving. The tendons are over stretched and fibrous. They will latch on to one anther for support and Heal Bound. Meaning no good for your walking much less running or kicking! tendinitis sets in in about 4-12 hours a dull throb while stationary and alot of pain when moved.

A tear would mean that he woulda been unable to continue directly after and that wasnt what he posted ! My brother had a 'small: tear on his shoulder(collar bone to overshoulder muscle)tendon and he did nothing. It took a few weeks but hes ok with a little less movement permanently.

He always hurting himself on his job(own company). It sux that he dont take his time with everything to do it safe! Hes also got permanent damage to his achilles area. More on the bone/cartilage where its attached then the tendon itself. I call him limpy!

Saw the doctor and have to get a knee brace and an MRI.

It might be the ACL or MCL, but he said the X-Rays looked good. I have a lot of water behind my knee though, and it is beginning to feel mad weird.

He didn't mention anything about needing to drain it, so I guess I will see if that gets better.

You should definitely get it checked out. I broke my leg last year, but I could still walk on it so I didn't get it checked out for 3 weeks. When I finally did get it checked it was fucked up pretty bad. It didn't heal right either, it's very inflexible and if I walk on it for long it starts hurting. The doctor also said I will probably develop arthritis in it at some point. It wouldn't have been a big deal if I had just gotten it checked out right when it happened.

EDIT: I didn't read the thread, glad you got it looked at after all.

martial arts is dangerous.

i personally would know instantly if i "needed" a medico. basically, if you were able to get up and walk away, your fine. be sore as shit an all, you'll heal. take it easy on your knee, and do some home brewed psyical rehab before you try doing that shit again.

also, my own, "crazy stupid" advice is listen to the chinese medicine man in your town. he'll probably prescribe some lu rong "soft velvet elk antler" good for revitalizing all joints knees included.
