you cant create caves but...

Will there be Underground cities - Dwarf - Alfar?
Quote:
Quote (BT Oren): Dwarves and Alfar will be able to build towns both in subterranean lands *and* on the surface. Their houses are hybrid designs, suitable for both surface and underground locales.

Being able to build a player house that's a hole in a mountain would truly cool.

More of a troll really :p

I think we're thinking more like the dark and grimy thieves den's under the city in Oblivion, rather than a quant English cottage built into a hillside with lovely gardens.

There won't be clanstones (building sites in this context) that no one's heard of in Darkfall after 6 months or so of release. This stuff gets on the Internet and then it's all over for that. So I'm gonna say no.

They should do away with building sites, period. Let the players craft whatever they wish wherever there is enough room. That way populating caves and the like will be possible.

Then you get suburban sprawl a la UO, less general incentive for people to compete amongst themselves for territory (thereby forcing the world to be smaller in order for conflict over land to actually happen assuming that the maximum number of simultaneous users remains constant), and also you're forced to make almost the entire world a "flat plain" so that it's buildable, where this system lets you build on top of mountains and behind waterfalls.

Right, but what about people who dont want to compete for territory? What about carebears who want to have a home, perhaps only actually fighting for it and it alone. If this system is geared towards guilds, then it sounds like the individual is getting ignored.

Besides, there is nothing to keep a free-build system on flat-land. First you would lay a foundation or stand of some kind, which would conform to the ground terrain. Then build on top of it.

...Yes. That's how the game is. Simply sitting with a home is not a part of this game, for better or for worse.

Try building on a mountain IRL. Then come back to me. In general this is just how free-build systems have always gone, from UO to SWG. You can build on flat land and nowhere else, but most land in the entire game is flat.

think about it you really have lots of people in real life hiding out in caves living for themselves right?

Idiotic. While obviously I have no intention of sitting in a house (macroing :P), dis-allowing player houses isnt really the way to go with it. People will WANT their own houses, rather than to be herded into a city area.

I mean, just think about that. Instead of striking out on your own, building your own house you have to... build your own city? Ugh. Unreal.

If the build sites are that good, then leave them in, and add tents or huts or something. No reason not to build homes. Then you could defend it from bandits, players, and all kinds of interesting things. SWG did it, and it was interesting. (Of course, that was pretty much in a Non-PvP 'u cant come in mah house lul' kind of way.)
