View Full Version : PVP Death
Is it true you lose all the items on your person if you die? Which would mean your character sort of starts over except maintains the skills they've learned?
I like pvp but I'm not hardcore enough for that if its the case. Call my a pansy I dont care. :)
Are there non-pvp servers or servers with limited pvp?

This statement is misleading. This skills that your character learn will, for the most part, be alot more important than the armor they wear. And in the projected large scale PvP battles, most of your opponents will probably be too caught up in the battle to loot your corpse before the battle is over.

Not really starts over, you still have all your items in the bank. So just go to the nearest bank, take out one of the ten thousand (not really) sets of armor and weapons and you're all set to get back in the battle.

Items are not important in DF. I don't think you understand the concepts here; I suggest reading the stickes in this forum, the FAQ, darkfallonline.com info and other places like warcry articles and ign. Do that before you make any unnesecary posts ;)

PLUS< if you read about the game. you should realise that gear at best gives maybe a 10-15% edge, thats it. and that gear is crafted.
mobs are full loot so you only have to kill a few and you have a set ready to bank, get 3/4 of these and your sorted. its more down to Skills <ingame> and skill at aiming out of game ect
not like wow where its a 100% margin between different tiers of gear, which take age of grinding to get
Edit : P.S. damn morthor, that was fast :)
I'm just trying to determine if darkfall is really for me or not. So please humor me here, my questions aren't intended to make the game seem less cool cause everybody is into something different!
With that said, one of the things I'm really into is gear. I like getting really nice gear that impacts my characters performance. Gear that's not easily obtained or gear that takes a while to obtain. by the sounds of it gear isn't really very important in Darkfall. Or even if it plays an important role it will be easy to obtain.
Is that maybe the case? Or am i getting away from the reality of the game too far?

If you are a grear nut and scared of losing items, this probably will not be the game for you. This game was meant to give a edge of loss to it while promoting skill.

when you get knocked unconcious or die, yea people can loot whatever they want from your corpse.
ive read somewhere that NPC's will also loot some stuff, as was the case in UO. I dont know if there is any truth behind that though.

What can I say. This isn't WoW, bro, where half of your character customization is the gear you use. In Darkfall, you are going to die fairly often, and as such, gear is going to be relatively easy to procure -- I'd expect that each racial capital will be able to provide whatever basic equipment you would need at a fairly low cost.
You can't really draw a comparison from what it would be like losing all your gear in WoW, or some other gear-dependent MMO, where your character would be devastated and pretty much useless. Darkfall was designed with full-loot in mind.

It sounds like, from this standard of wanting to work your way toward a really good set of gear, that this game is not a game for you. However, you can still work for a set of gear in the game that may be unique or what have you that may be tricky to obtain. The challenge here is surviving and keeping the gear, or hunting down and killing those who steal it from you to get it back. This game has alot of freedom and is best paired with imagination to put the freedom to use.
Well sounds like I'm too much of a wuss to play this game :) I still wanna try it out cause it looks amazing and the concept is cool. I play on pvp servers in all the other games I play, but none, so far, have had such harsh penalties for death.
On the other hand gear was always considerably more important than it will be in DarkFall.
Maybe its time for a change anyway. I've been playing the same games for 6+ years now. They all have the same rules, least Darkfall is ballsy enough to change it up.

well, they want to take this game away from a gear grind.
the game is basicly based on player skill, e.g. aiming then what sort of skill setup you chose(you can have any and you level skills by using them, they are learnt from players or npc's)
Gear will give you an edge and im sure there is some pretty rare stuff, but this can be stolen, the best gear in the game is made by crafters, so you can buy it ect.
the sets dropped from mobs will be pretty crappy, maybe a few decent items at best. big dragon like mobs will probably guard stuff that more useful than gear. e.g. maybe a relic that gives your clan city a small boost in say lumber harvest

Well then, this game isn't for you.
The last part of what you want is true though, there will be hard to obtain gear in this game, but that gear won't be the factor if you lose or win like in other games. So if I would be you, I would get that gear and use it in safe situations just to brag with it. Or use it in large scale combat where you have your mates to watch your back, or corpse if it would fall down to the ground.

I don't know about you guys...but I loved WoW. My first MMO really. Of course, I am biased because Warcraft 2 was one of the most influential games in my life (It gave me that first spark of love for the fanrasy genre). But yah, back to the topic. It would atleast give DF a chance if you can, I promiss it won't disapoint, and you can hold me to it (For whatever that's worth).

Full loot is in as everyone has said, but remember, YOU can also everyone else also. Just gotta be better. I think that when gear is not the issue in terms of who is better, your skill will only get better.
that said...Gosh, whats with all the WoW haters...
WoW is a great PvE game.....
but yes WoW is about as useful for PvP as a flower is.
People rate that game to much based on its flawed PvP system rather then what it was used made for, a great PvE experience that you cant really get in any other game on the market aside from Eve Online, but that game takes too much work to get into and being Military I dont have a lot of time.
I also like to collect the best gear, but that is a game playstyle that is best left to a game like WoW.
PvP= 90% skill based game
PvE =90% gear based game
But hey what can i say I like BOTH types of game (although most people will bash on or the other because they think you cant like both.)

I'm sure you'll find the kind of hardcore challenges you like with great rewards both in pve and pvp, the bottom line is, I could be running around with that sword that took you so long to get, if you'r not careful enough :ninja: :ohno:
But really, this is what i say to everyone when they have doubts on full loot: You'r always thinking in the perspective that you'll always be dieing and be looted, but you'll kill and loot as much or even more, I'm sure you'll loose some important stuff, but for sure you'll loot even more. It won't hurt to try :D

I played uo for 7 years 4 years on the europe server and 3 years on a free server.
I played nearly 3 years wow I just recently quit.
i like pve but i still miss the good old uo days where you could kill people that where anoying you. or when you where farming monsters for gold and magic items you hat to watch out for pk's. or sometimes with friends went out and go hunt pk's.
there are more memories from exciting/fun moments in uo then i have from wow and i have seen all the content there is until now.

Playing DFO is going to take a bit of a mindset change for gear-focused people. If you think of gear in WoW and its ilk as like "levels beyond the cap", then what you're really after (in one regard) is *progression*. Progression in DFO looks like it's going to be less of an issue, personally, and more tied into achieving different goals. Those goals can be more group-focused, and individual goals will have to be more, well, individualistic than working with a team to down a boss enough times so everyone has the Tier token.
Instead of downing Kael'thas, you'll be raiding the Alfar tunnels, or getting enough resources to build a ship or a defensive tower. Or building a nation. On your own, you can scout, prospect, explore, gather cash and foes and defeated enemies.
Gear is just like your repair cost.
Or if you're looking for a cool outfit, indications seem to be that there will be more variety available to you. Not every heavy fighter will be in the same T5 stuff...

Like has been said, losing your items will only be a minor setback, slightly more of a setback than a simple repair cost. You may have just gone to your bank and taken out a load of things for a skilling session and on your way got owned by some guy and looted. But things like this will just add that much more depth to killing someone, gives me of satisfaction than just some honor points.
You'll also know the guy hasn't just ressed after 30 seconds with absolutely no loss of anything else, he'll be completely naked, nothing in their bags. This though won't be too bad for the player as if you aren't stupid you will already have backup armor/weapons in your bank or better yet your guild blacksmith would have crafted a whole lot :>.
I was wondering about Soulbound items? Have they announced that their will be certain items that won't drop from your corpse? Not sick epix like in WoW, armorless useless things like Sashs and Headbands... If there is i'm sort of thinking it's a bad idea, that instantly takes the realism out of being able to fully loot a corpse.

well.. I just think this game is a little more "real" and if u want your gear back.. just go back where u died and everything that the other guy (or anyone who passed by) didn't loot you can take it back.. or just go find the guy who took you down and kill him ;)

I never really had a chance to play UO, didn't even know it existed until I was playing WoW. I did play several other MMOs though. I really like the complete player based economy of Star Wars Galaxies and I played that game until they raped the combat system with a broken mop handle.(the second time even) I also played Asheron's Call, which had some special gear that couldn't be looted. Unfortunately, the game wasn't really based around losing all your gear on death, so Darktide, the open pvp server, was a very harsh environment until you could get ahold of this gear. The downside to this gear existing was the cookie cutter, generic look that plagues Wow today. SWG was similar with looks, but you never knew just how hard that generic looking weapon was gonna hit for.

As other people have said, I think the difference here is that because Gear doesn't mean as much it's not as harsh a penalty as it might seem, and it adds to the fun as as well as dancing over the fact you just smashed them, you can leave them lying naked in a field :P
Ooh, question: if you are allowed loot people when they die, are you allowed equip stuff? If so....

The problem is so many MMO's have the WoW mentality where everyone has 'blessed' items that you have no chance of losing. This leads to crappy item based gameplay that just isn't fun, at least for me and the thousands of people that are anticipating DFO.
A game is so much more exciting when there is the risk of being killed and losing the gold and items you've farmed. I still dink around on old-school UO free shards and I still get a rush at times, even though it's usually me doing the chasing.
Risk vs. reward ftw.

There's going to be rare sets of gear and items that you won't want to take out except for those very special occasions. Catching someone else unaware and taking their set of special armor sounds very appealing :)

mate, my advice is, give DF a try. Alot of people is in situation like you where all other mmorpgs theyve played is gear dependant, so it will take a little time to get used to this style of mmorpg, but I am pretty sure you will like it ALOT after you get into the game a bit.

Change it back really, games have gone backwards for to long.
The original virtual world concept was all about players driving the game. The newer games turned it into a theme park ride, which resembles this concept only at a superficial level.

As much as this community won't want to admit it, gear will be a factor in this game. It won't be as large of a factor as WoW or EQ, but it will play its own role. That being said, like anything else, it can be taken from you once you get it. If you want good gear, there are plenty of lost dungeons hinted at, and even if you don't want gear, there's always the word stones to find, which people will have to fight a war to take from you.
