I continuously see people write "stealth is in,but you have to do it manually.."
Why not say it like it is : stealth is not in, there is no stealth.. you have the option toplace your character where others wont see you, like being behind someone..
There will be no floating names, so you will be harder to detect..
But this whole "manual stealth thing" just confuse people, there are people that think they will enter stealth mode if they put on dark clothes and stay in the shadows..
Stealth is not in, but you can position yourself in a hard to spot position..
and use clothes with colours that does not stand out too much..
There is no stealth skill in game, you have to understand how view of sight works..and use it in game.

that's just how stealth works in RL to. there's no invis button. i like it this way much more realistic and fun. tho i would like to see some good black/cammo armors to wear :-)
maybe some /kneel /lie down commands would be nice as well

you can crouch, but there is no prone.

I thinka stealthy character will be amongst the, if not tTHE most difficult character type to play. I'd imagine you really have to practice and know what you're doing if you want any chance of succeeding as that character.

You can effectively perform stealth activities by using tactics such as knowing your terrain, moving silently, using cover, using weather and darkness, wearing non-reflective armor, clothing that blends with the environment, keeping your weapon sheathed, crouching through tall grass, staying in shadows, moving slowly, trying not to make noise, being aware of where your enemy is looking (AR 5, SR 8) Source: http://rpgvault.ign.com/articles/717/717767p1.html
Monsters can hear and smell players, and be alerted to their presence, so you may want to move silently and keep your scent away by moving downwind from them to get in a surprise attack (AR 4, SR 8) Source: http://rpgvault.ign.com/articles/717/717767p1.html
These are the things we know so far about stealth but as you can see the accuracy rating is low so it might be something different.

there's may be no stealth skill (or maybe there is?), but there absolutely is stealth. (going invisible is not stealth, it's stupid)

You would be amazed how many people are oblivious to their surroundings and don't feel endangered unless something hits them.

Well I've always played PvP servers whatever game I've been in, so I kind of look around by default :p

all the ninja books in my library of slaughter, state quite plainly that stealth is easy... for the most part if you are out of a persons direct line of sight, either below or above, your pretty much invisible, as long as you don't move and are somewhat camouflaged, i've used the techniques with some success in RL, mainly just scaring co-workers... not actually ninjaing anyone.
as long as they're not activly looking for you, they'll just walk right by you, even if your just a foot above their head.
i have a very small amount of limited faith in the df "stealth" system, but as a player i wouldn't bank on it. hopefully wearing light armor will yield bonuses in areas that will make viable for reasons other than stealth.
i can't wait for beta

I plan on trying to master the art of stealth.
I love PvP and will only play MMO's on PvP servers but nevertheless...I like to pick and choose when I PvP and when I don't.
So stealth will be of the utmost importance to me. However it's implemented in the game...I'll master it early.
edit: I should say I'll try and master it early.

Because that's not entirely true. From what the devs have said, stealth is in, but not like others games where it's an invisibility check. The game engine apparently will still conceal you, for example, even if they have certain graphical features turned off that would place you in plain site.
Otherwise, we don't know yet how it works, other than "it's in", and "it's more realistic than in other games".

i think that idea is sweet, only this reminds me of a type of 'stealth' that you would see in oblivion, where your not cloaked in invis, but you have an indicator which tells you whether you can been detected or not.

One great thing about this stealth system is not only that it will be more challenging and fun to go stealth, it will be much more interesting crossing the landscape because you never know if there is someone chilling behind a bush ready to jump you for your Nikes.

There is no prone simply because its hard to get up while wearing heavy armor, plus you might stab yourself in the gut with that knife you put on your belt :P
On a more serious note, i like the hiding behind someone or something concept of stealth. It kinda makes it more sensible.

I wonder if the Ranger-types and such will be able to wear craftable flora-suits, that not only are colored like the foliage around them, but are textured so as well. It'd be kind of like modern-day snipers. I think those are called gilly suits? Not sure on the spelling 8P.
It is in a dev log, that there is stealth. It is done by entering a stealth mode, which will lower the amount of sound you make, and for monsters, the smell you give off. It will also bring you to the texture quality and other graphical settings in line with the environment. I assume these are all separate skills, other than blending in as that would be much less useful against people with the same settings for both characters and environment.

wouldn't environmental stealth be defeat-able by client side hacks? for instance if you hacked the game client to render all trees and foliage with a 50% alpha, you'd see anyone hiding behind them.
So would the server, to compensate for this possibility, calculate a likelihood of detection and from that determine whether to update an observer's client of the location of the hiding party?
(brain foggy at the moment, please tell me if I'm not being clear)
