This is actually a very complicated question. In many ways it should play like oblivion in the fact that it's 1st person sword and board, though the devs have said it would battle more along the lines of Mount & Blade. Should be very interesting indeed.

Melee is close 3rd person, not first person. First person for ranged and spells in combat. It is similar in that you attack by pointing and clicking to swing your weapon / cast and you have to aim aim in much the same way, yes. Go play Mount and Blade for a good idea of what it will be like, its free for the trial.

when i first heard of DFO, my first impression was "cool, online morrowind"
i'm looking forward to hearing from the beta testers what they would most closely resemble the game play to.
guess i really should at least have a look at M&B just to know what others are talking about.

Yes,but they will balance it for players vs players. stawars JKJA for exemple, when you play single player, you are so overpowered. When you play online,it is now balanced.

In oblivion, when you run back whitout turn your body, you still fast.In darkfall, you will be forced to walk back. When you are mounted, you cant cast spells or trow arros. Why? because it would be too overpowered.

Darkfall online devs try to balance PVP more then anything.

Wow for exemple have too many things to balance like every BG's,every class, but only 1 spec is powerful for pvp and they try to balance raid too.(dungeons raids.)

Actually, the trial version of Mount & Blade is free, but you can only advance to level 5. Other than that restriction though, you have full functionality. By the way, it is NOT a Half Life 2 mod, by any stretch of the imagination. It is developed completely from the ground up.

That being said, it is simply the best, most realistic single-player Medieval-era combat simulation I have ever played. I wouldn't call it the greatest game in the world, but the combat aspect is stellar.

One of the primary differences between M&B and Oblivion (and most other games of that genre) is that instead of a single mouse click corresponding to a swing of your weapon like in Oblivion, in M&B you click and hold the mouse button to draw back your weapon and only when you release it do you actually strike. That may seem like a subtle thing, but it makes a world of difference in how much control you have over your avatar, and makes combat feel more kinetic and real.

I really wish more game developers would go this route, and I've been trying with no luck to scour the internet for info about whether DF combat will work like this or the more traditional Oblivion-style. Anyone have any insight or info on this?

The combat is similar, except there will be no ranged/magic combat on horses, only melee.

The real answer is we have no clue. The devs have said Mount&Blade's combat is similar to Darkfall, but no one but devs and testers have played it. All we can do is look at videos and guess.

Either way, I highly suggest downloading Mount&Blade. If you can buy it, do it, its well worth it, and you'll get it before the prices go up when the full version is released September 16th.

Here is the Mount&Blade site:
