Why not? There are no classes after all. Anyone can pick up any skill.
You can be a fire wielding mage using two handed maces to smash faces.

there isn't really any reason for a pure mage to have any weapon.. no, there aren't other race weapons.

Tanks will work fine. Hell, tanks will work better then in any MMO thanks to collision detection.
The problem just is that people are thinking tanks in the general WoW sense.
Tanks in Darkfall means people on the front line, taking the hits for their friends.

There's no such thing as classes.
If you want to be a mage wielding a sledgehammer or a heavy crossbow, it's your call.

though there might not be good cause to be a pure mage, seeing how you only get one char and will probably have to stand on your own at some point.
I could be wrong. A pure mage could be so effective at a distance that in 1v1 no one is getting into melee range.

as of my experience playing UO and never experiencing WOW, a Tank is one character that can switch between mage and warrior at any given strategic chance.

The ol' Battlemage is a good way to go if you want to be both a caster and a warrior.
Personally though...I'm always pure melee. Casters are ghey.

Yeah there's no classes.
But most players will still play as a basic class type.
You'll have Rangers and Druids and Thieves, etc etc.

My concept is always rogue; but what that means to me may not be what it means to anyone else
It refers more to the thought process than any item usage restrictions
Which is why I like the no class style; because no other games version of a rogue fits my vision for it

I know exactly what you mean and agree.
I'm also play as a Rogue.
But that doesn't mean always stabbing someone in the back with a dagger.

Those weapons are only the special racial weapons. Meaning only that races' crafters can make those weapons, although anyone else can use them.
There are thousands of different weapons in the game. Take a look at the gameplay video to see what weapons they are using.

Yea, kinda like guns are from specific manufacturers in the real world
Doesnt mean no one else can use them; just means you only have a limited source to supply them to you

I look forwards to drunken nights screaming as I am a flesh-shield for my teammates!

If I want to be a caster I will have to use a damn mage staff or wand... No Racial or special weapons for me... Poo!

probably, who knows? The sheer amount of skills, spells and abilities will make no two characters the same. How can you call these characters of the same class, then?

hm i actually dont like to cast with a wand or something, cuz i just hate harry potter... i wanna cast spells through my hands and my will, not some frikken broom... well, i think a staff would be okay, like a focus, you could even parry weapon attacks with it, but that should damage the staff... oh well, i cant wait to see how some things gonna be in this game... i hope their will be weapon draw and sheat animations, not just some quake1 instant weapon changing... well, i am a little nervous cuz of those prestige class... only a little... but well, i will just wait...
oh and btw, i wonder if arrows have a real balistic curve, to allow the archers to bombarding some place from afar... would be too cool to see thousand arrows to fly through the air and landing in some city  damn, i would be honored to die in this rain of death... or maybe even flaming arrows :D
i just want that this whole game will give peoples the ability to do just the same stuff like in Lord Of The Rings, Braveheart and Robin Hood... including going inside a castle, all mounted up, and killing the guildlord in his bed with a flail :D

I think it would be beneficial for every mage to have skill in at least one melee weapon:
- There will be situations where someone has a hard counter to your magic style.
- If you run out of mana you still have stamina, but that stamina is useless (except to try and sprint away) if you can't use a weapon.
- Melee weapons will usually do more damage than spells from what I've been reading, so when someone is in close and you can't get out of range it would make sense to be able to block/hit back..
- Spells have to be aimed...even amateur FPS players are able to dodge bullets by predicting when the person was going to shoot. These spells travel a LOT slower than bullets and there will be many FPS players here.
You all will hate me for using a WoW reference, but it's similar to how Druids in 3.0 could change into a tank, rogue, nuker or healer and be really good at all of them if their player had a lot of skill. Druids were hands-down the number one class in WoW Arena when played at the top-tier in 3.0. This game will be even more like that due to the versatility of a skill-based system (i.e. having more answers for specialized builds).

To cast magic you need to wield a Staff.

You gotta use wands to cast, arrows to have a ballistic curve, and wind is supposed to also have a effect on them as well. Have fun.
